The Golden Globes work differently than the Oscars or other awards ceremonies like it. For one, it is a place where there is no definitive Best Picture winner. Instead there are Best Picture awards offered in multiple genres. Something called Hamnet took Best Dramatic Motion Picture, One Battle After Another won the Globe On A Stick for Best Comedy / Musical Motion Picture, and The Secret Agent got the trophy for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture. But we’re here for Best Animated Motion Picture, right?

Nominees included Arco, Elio, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, Zootopia 2 and KPop Demon Hunters…but you already saw the headline and splash image, so you know the outcome. HUNTR/X took home yet another win, and the year has only just begun.

The coming months will see both the Annies and the Oscars happen, and the outcome of the Golden Globes can be a bellwether as to how the latter two will shake up. The Annie nominees are KPop Demon Hunters, Elio, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, Zootopia 2 and The Bad Guys 2…but that’s just for Best Feature, KPDH is also nominated in nine other categories, tying with Elio for the most Annies possible. The Oscar noms have yet to be announced, but we’d be surprised and confused if KPDH does not get on the list.

What’s the future of KPop Demon Hunters beyond all these awards? At the moment, all we know of is the sequel movie in development, set for the far away year of 2029. Rumors of an embarrassing live-action remake were just that, shut down by creators Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans last October in a BBC interview. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn’t work for me,” Kang said.

Other than that, there’s still the matter of the mysterious short film DEBUT: A KPop Demon Hunters Story, allegedly complete and waiting for release whenever that happens. It was created by an outside team as part of Sony Pictures’ mentorship program LENS, so it might look and feel a bit different.
