Would you be OK with a PG-13 Disney or Pixar animated movie?

Disney is no stranger to PG-13 movies these days. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series all bear such a rating, and are associated with the Disney brand, either in merchandising or in their theatrical releases.

But there’s never been a theatrical Disney animated movie that was rated PG-13. The closest thing to an exception would be The Bob’s Burgers Movie, which Disney “inherited” from 20th Century Fox and distributed under its 20th Century Studios banner. The upcoming sequel to The Simpsons Movie is in the same boat. Disney clearly doesn’t seem to have a problem with live-action PG-13 movies being associated with its brand, or with animated PG-13 films based on 20th Century Studios shows. So will we ever see a PG-13 animated movie from Walt Disney Animation or Pixar?

And if we did, what would such a movie look like?

Never.

What makes you say never? There was another thread a while back about how Disney is seekibn new franchises to attract Gen Z males, and given how many members of that demographic are into anime, a PG-13 animated movie would fill that niche nicely.

Because for as many desperate moves Disney the company will make for the sake of sales/trying to attract new audiences it still is yet at the point of desperation of going against Walt's ideals of having the prime canon animated movies unable to be watched and viewed by the whole family. Like the point of Disney movies is they are experiences ANYONE should be able to enjoy from 8 to 80. And yeah kids can get into PG-13 movies and aren't blocked or anything but that style is different and making those sort of films go against the core Disney vision.

Plus feels especially silly IMHO to ask NOW for them to do so considering Zootopia 2 is such a bonzana hit and proves the power of PG ratings is still quite a strong one.

well, I rather see disney used the disney & pixar animation technology to produce adult animated features under the 20th century animation label

Robot Dreams could've easily been a Disney movie, but it's PG-13 for a robot making a gesture that looks like the middle finger (he only has four fingers).

There's a wide range of PG-13s, some of which would be Disney-friendly, some of which aren't. I'm not even sure if The Hunchback of Notre Dame could manage a PG today ("I was just imagining a rope around that pretty neck..." "I know what you were imagining!")

Yes, given that some of their Disney+ shows have been TV-PG over the usual TV-Y7 and TV-G.

I think we're well past the point of thinking Disney is a family-friendly company nowadays.
They recently released the third Deadpool movie, rated R, and didn't fall back on their newly acquired 20th Century (i.e. substitute for Miramax) branding.

Let's also not forget the Pixar SparkShort Purl, which shows they're not afraid to swear.

I don't think this would happen. Disney is too clingy to their family friendly image to make a PG-13 animated movie from either Walt Disney Animation Studios or Pixar. Swearing or not doesn't make a difference since many animated movies these days have swearing yet still stay PG.

I'm honestly surprised we are not at that point yet, to be honest. I'm not sure if WDAS or Pixar would ever release a PG-13 film under their banner (at least not now), but something from Fox Animation could definitely get a theatrical release.

It would be interesting if Disney ever released a Marvel or Star Wars full length animated film. It would probably go straight to Disney+, but it might be a good way to test the "more mature" animation waters.

Personally, I hope not. I’m not saying animation for adults shouldn’t exist, but I like Disney and Pixar for being for all ages.

I am fine with it if it makes sense for the story and doesn't seem forced. Like if Disney did a faithful adaptation of "The Chronicles of Prydain" series, that might have to be PG-13. But if it's just some stunt, I don't need it.

I think they should stop trying say some of their movies are PG when they would fit G but that's a different story. I'm not against a Disney making movies for teens and going PG-13 in animation. They would (and should) put it under the 20th Studios banner , though.

Well, you also have to consider that the bar for what's considered PG-13 has been lowered considerably over the past 20 years or so. Most Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are PG-13, and they're heavily marketed to kids. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that there's a double-standard where live-action movies that would have gotten a PG rating if they were animated sometimes end up with a PG-13 rating.

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
