"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

He's not going to have any quotes. Nobody at WS has ever said anything about not liking the .hack// franchise. He's just assuming that was the case due to the treatment of the show over the years.

What people generally believe is CN got locked into a contract to play all the .hack series and buried them so they didn't see the light of day after .hack//SIGN aired a handful of episodes on Saturday afternoons. Despite premiering the show at 1AM, CN played .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet numerous times. That was either because they liked it despite playing it so late or so early (it was at 5AM for a while) or because they were contractually obligated to run a .hack// series and until .hack//ROOTS came along it was either the more fun loving Twilight Bracelet or the brooding and slow .hack//SIGN.

Though of all the shows FUNi has that CN aired before, none of those .hack// series seems like the best choice IMO.

Oh wow! Michiko and Hatchin looks amazing! I'd love to watch something that's akin to Tarantino's work. Funny enough, it feels like it fits Adult Swim more than Toonami... if that makes sense.

I really liked the trailer for the dub too. It looks great. I can see what you mean about fitting Adult Swim more than Toonami though.

It's weird you're making that distinction. If ASA becoming Toonami means the end of mature adult-targeted shows on the block (outside of endless reruns of Bebop with the occasional cycles of Big O and GitS:SaC), that doesn't seem good to me.

I wasn't thinking that it would be the end of mature adult-targeted shows on the block. I could just understand why people would say that it kind of fit ASA a bit more than Toonami. I don't think that it wouldn't fit on Toonami based on that little clip, but I could see why people would say that it would fit ASA, and it would be good to have a bit more variety besides shonen titles.

Eh, I don't see how Michiko to Hatchin doesn't fit on Toonami. Tone-wise, I never felt ASA was that different from Toonami back in the day aside from the fact it aired shows that couldn't fly past the censors for daytime broadcast. The only ASA show I don't see fitting on Toonami, besides the comedies like Shin Chan. is Paranoia Agent, and that's because that is not an action show. Anyway, based on the trailer alone for Mitchiko to Hatchin, it's a Brazillian Bebop, and more importantly it's action-packed and looks to be a lot of fun. In my book, it doesn't seem all that far away in tone from Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star or other a couple of other shows Toonami's aired over the years, Cartoon Network or [adult swim]. Besides, all that matters is if they like the show, because if they like the show they will put it on.

ASA has basically been an extension of Toonami all these years and while it would play some shows that aren't action technically so did Toonami.

Especially when you consider how similar ASA started out to Toonami the Midnight Run, there's really no difference between them if they're both action cartoon blocks for mature audiences.

Now that Toonami has three of the biggest Shonen titles, Toonami feels... like it's airing "daytime television" shows. Michiko and Hatchin is that kind of mature, action show you'd expect to air in the late hours of the night. Kinda like ASA? Plus, ASA never had these big time shonen titles, so it's line up felt... appropriate for the late night hours, more or less. So don't get me wrong. It's exciting to sit back for a night of Toonami these days. And I can't fault Toonami for creating such a great lineup of shows. Especially since the Cowboy Bebops, Outlaw Stars, and Michiko and Hatchins of the world are fewer than the many shonens out there. Toonami is doing a fine, fine job for minimal (or no) pay. It should continue to acquire -good- action shows, despite labels or country of origin.

InuYasha,Yu Yu Hakusho, Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Bleach beg to differ :p.

I dunno, ASA and Toonami just don't feel that different to me in terms of maturity when comparing both in their heydays. Besides, the Toonami crew loves Cowboy Bebop, so a show like it is something I think they would be keen to grab. They like the shows they like, and that's not just "shonen" shows. Hopefully we don't get anymore longrunners before Bleach ends, so we can get stuff like Black Lagoon on the block and not something like...the Toriko anime (shudders).

This. People always conveniently forget that ASA also aired Shonen shows. I could even add more shows to the list, like Case Closed, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. And Trigun's original manga was in a Shonen magazine.

It's also worth noting they even aired a Sunday morning show, that aired and competed against other kid shows in it's slot, at 7AM in Japan, which was Eureka Seven. So Adult Swim never really takes the original show's demographics into consideration when picking it up, as long as it's a good action show and would perform well in their demographics.

Well I'm still a little fresh onto the anime scene, so good points everybody! Now that you reminded me of Case Closed, Gold Guy, I would love to check that series out again. I miss watching it.

Also, that is really funny. How different Japanese television is from US TV... It's weird to think that Eureka Seven was a Sat AM show.

Well they're trying to make Aincrad somewhat exciting. The problem is Williams Street is going to have to do a completely different promo when we hit ALFheim

They're going to have to do a different promo after episode 3

So, any guesses for what replaces Eureka 7 in a month?

Possibilities:
-reruns of FLCL or GitS as an easy timeslot filler
-reruns of Deadman Wonderland or Samurai 7 as a slightly less easy but possibly good-for-ratings timeslot filler
-another old AS show coming back (Trigun and Champloo seem the most likely since most everything else of note was Bandai)
-Gurren Lagann (a network premiere that's been run on TV enough to not feel totally wasted by a late timeslot, and could be part of a bundle with SAO)
-if they're getting a new show, I'd think something with a trippy late-night feel to it like Panty and Stocking or Madoka Magica would be the smartest choice for the 2:30/3 slot (much as I want shows like Tiger and Bunny or Michiko to Hatchin on Toonami, I'd almost rather they don't air than be wasted at such a late timeslot where they wouldn't be able to get the casual fan ratings they so deserve)

I can't see them rerunning Deadman Wonderland or Samurai 7. I thought that they could only air most of their acquired shows once. Trigun or Madoka Magica would be awesome, especially if they could eventually air Trigun Bandlands or the third Madoka movie when that eventually has a dub as a special movie night.

Personally, I really want Michiko to Hatchin to be the show, but I have the feeling that it's going to be an older show, not only because of the timeslot, but also because of their pickups this year already. I know they have a higher budget than when they started, but still, I don't think it'll be enough for a brand new show. Even if it isn't M to H, I'll probably be fine with whatever show they pickup for the slot, so long as it isn't E7: Astral Ocean.

They could air them more but it would cost more. I could see them picking it as an option if they have the money to avoid dumping something new in such a late timeslot while also making it slightly more exciting than putting on shows that have been rerun a billion times.

So will any new shows ever get the chance to air in the first hour and a half of Toonami from now until Bleach ends (assuming expansion's not happening)? I kind of wish they could push Naruto to a later time given that it's reruns but given its ratings that doesn't seem likely. A bit unfortunate for anything new hoping to reach an audience wider than the otaku and Toonami nuts.

I think it's more likely that they would use that money to get a new show, even if it is an older show, rather than spend the money on getting a show they already aired. It isn't impossible, but it seems unlikely.

Probably not. They'll most likely want to keep their big Shonen titles lined up together, especially when they do tend to pull in pretty good ratings, until Bleach ends.

It sure won't be Astral Ocean; they just started dubbing the thing.

I'm just guessing, because I don't know much, but I assume it costs more to license stuff that just got finished, or just came out on home video. They want you to buy the discs instead, right?
