"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

By the way, I don’t wanna complain or nothing while it’s awesome that Sailor Moon is back in U.S airwaves after its 20+ years absence, I felt adding DBZ Kai isn’t anything new. Don’t get me wrong I love DBZ Kai, but it’s just that the show is already playing on the weekend toonami schedule recently. But considering DBZ is like toonami’s golden boy, I guess it’s no surprise to be honest. I mean I was expecting other retro anime we haven’t seen in years like YYH, some Gundam shows, Rurouni Kenshin etc. But we just got three shows on toonami weekday lineup, so it is what it is, but it’s better than nothing I guess. But the toonami rewind definitely has potential to be very successful regardless
Considering online schedules were showing the regular Friday lineup, perhaps this project was only very recently finalized. If we are lucky, Kai will be removed from Saturday and they just haven’t made that call yet.

Remember - Crunchyroll is still working against Toonami. So any classic that falls under their umbrella is going to be off limits.

Maybe they will get Super on regular Toonami. Or Daima whenever that will be.
Why? We already had Super 2 and a half times on Toonami. We don’t need it again.

Nobody saw this coming, but reruns and nostalgia seems like what cable is. Don't know how much this cost, but Sailor Moon and OG Naruto's return is cool as long as they don't turn their back on the new stuff. Nu Toonami got much more popular when it aired major hits like Attack on Titan and stopped being a Bebop and GITS rerun farm. Granted, cable dying out and everyone watching on streaming is probably why this move is done. Kinda cool, but most hardcore Toonami fans have their Naruto, DBZ, and Sailor Moon episodes memorized.

In terms of news for current anime, MHA dub streams tomorrow, so you cannot argue that the dub won't be ready in time for June 1. It looks like MHA has a special "must be a month behind the dub" clause in order for it to air or something because season 6 had a lengthy gap between the dub's streaming and Toonami premiere.

That's pretty cool. Especially concerning Sailor Moon (and yeah, definitely glad they're using the Viz dub).

Though considering it's airing at 5:00, I wonder if they'll have to go with censored/edited cuts like the Toonami days of yore.

it is possible MHA will be replacing DBZ Kai on Saturday nights. They could put it at 12:30 and shift everything else down. I don’t think they really should be keeping Zom 100 at 12:30 when it has such a drop off. Hopefully MHA arrives sooner rather than later.

Looks like Toonami it's also airing on Fridays but this time it's called Toonami Rewind and it starts May 31st at 5. And the shows are Sailor Moon, DBZ Kai and Naruto.

That's so cool. Yeah, I wish they had brought back Moltar or Tom versions 1 or 2 (not 3) but I'll take what I can get.

I think Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z Kai and Naruto is a good line up, but if they're going to go retro, I want Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo and Outlaw Star back. And maybe reruns of Batman: The Animated Series.

"We admit it’s disheartening to see WB pretty much give up on convincing children to watch cable TV again, but on the bright side, look at all this cool stuff we grown-ups get. There’s been a revamp of the classic schedule with Checkered Past, which has been enjoyable, but of course Cartoon Network in the 90s and 2000s was more than just Cartoon Cartoons.

We’re pleased to report the original Toonami is coming back, right into the place it belongs (a weekday afternoon). Toonami Rewind, a throwback block featuring the OG’s greatest hits, will appear every Friday from 5 to 7. The initial lineup includes Sailor Moon (the new Viz dub), an hour of DBZ Kai and the original Naruto."

I echo the excitement and love for Sailor Moon being included in the Rewind lineup. Wow. Just wow. Interesting development. Can't wait to see what other titles will show up, too. Gave me flashbacks to watching Outlaw Star.

We need to bear in mind Crunchyroll stuff is off limits, so I guess it will be a mostly Viz block. I think Sunrise themselves license Gundam stuff, so that could possibly air. Can old ASA stuff like Inuyasha and Death Note be eligible? The problem is that Crunchyroll licenses all the good stuff and aside from Naruto, most of their shows were flops like Zatch Bell and MAR.

A good stopping point would be on the episode where Piccolo dies. After that, Toonami can replace DBZ Kai (on Saturdays) for MHA premieres.

Toonami Rewind? This is exhilarating. Get excited!

I suggested The Vision of Escaflowne, despite not being on Toonami before. I recall at one point that Toonami almost got Escaflowne, but some other anime distributor beat Toonami to it, The Slayers and Magic Knight Rayearth. The Slayers did air on AZN Television up to Try, and both of the Revolution seasons aired on Toku at one point. Magic Knight Rayearth ended up on crunchyroll, Prime Video and FreeVee as of this post, but have yet to get US TV airings.

It’s still AS, so no censorship should be necessary. None of these shows are that saucy anyway.

That would be a good trade off because otherwise MHA replaces Zom. This way we could get something less predictable in the Zom slot.

For the seasons they did air, Demarco had to personally fly to Japan to make the deals for Gundam. Sunrise is very obtuse, they may not want that kind of bill for this block. Plus, they can’t get Witch from Mercury, so it does not seem that they can just use Sunrise in the same way they do Toei to get around CR.

Cue hundreds of requests for Falconer DBZ from people who will never watch this block.

It seems like Hulu has lost that exclusivity with Sailor Moon that led to it being obtainable by Toonami. Does Mickey Mouse have a grip on all of Bleach, or just the Thousand Year Blood War? Classic Bleach would also be cool. Now that I think of it, Viz did better overall on ASA than Cartoon Network Toonami, so if we are limited to Viz titles, Viz ASA titles seem more realistic.

Hulu had an exclusive period for a long time but I believe it lapsed a couple years ago. The same will probably happen for Bleach, but no time soon.

In slightly related news, after asking for suggestions, Demarco seems to have completely shut down his twitter

Dragonball Z KaI was/is dubbed by Funimation/ Crunchyroll not Viz mind you

And owned by Toei, who has the final say where the show airs. Same with One Piece. Those air on Toonami because Toei has the power/desire to tell CR they aren’t allowed to prevent Toonami from airing them.

Unfortunately that method of getting around CR blockades does not seem to work with any other studio.

Wow... I'm in complete lost for words about the Toonami Rewind block. Sailor Moon returns after a 23 year absence. I didn't think I'd see the day. I missed out on Sailor Moon on CN because I started watching CN the same year the anime left apparently. So does this mean there's Toonami Rewind Fridays and the main Toonami on Saturdays? That would be Toonami 2 times a week then!

Yep, that's exactly right.

I have a problem, though: This Toonami Rewind block only has shows with 100+ episodes in every slot, and with it airing only once a week, it would take a couple of years before we see ANY new shows in rotation.

Replacing one of the DBZ Kai slots (since it airs for a full hour) would only be a temporary fix, since the rest of the block would be hogged with long-runners for a very long time, and if one of the replacements is yet ANOTHER long-runner...well, that would be a problem, wouldn't it?
