"That Guy With the Glasses" Talkback 16 (Warning Strong Language)

Just got done with Part 1 of the retrospective. Overall, it's enjoyable :)

I agree. There were times where I turned my head away from the screen because the music video was just too disturbing to look at. Still, Todd's comments were pretty funny and captured why both the song and video don't work at all.
Yes, I know. I find it funny, but extremely gross at the same time :ack:

I thought that she covered the first thirteen or so episodes pretty well without talking about the main characters too much. I don't think that it was a problem that the first arc didn't have the typical villain for the characters to fight or that the first arc was that slow. They were going for a Digimon series set in real-world Japan, so it would make sense that they wouldn't be fighting evil right away, but just setting up the characters with their Digimon partners, have the characters question as to why they're here and fighting off different wild Digimon to help develop their relationships with their Digimon partners before fighting off the major villains.

I think that it worked quite nicely since I still think that these main three characters have the best relationships with their Digimon partners and the setup from the start of the series really helped with that. The action was still pretty good, significantly different from how the fights worked in the Adventure series and there was good amount of character development, mainly for Takato and Rika, as they grew closer to their Digimon partners.

I have to agree, the character development and set up was great. And refreshing to know the characters more. And not just the Humans, abut also the Digimon as well.

Hypnos was especially interesting since I thought that there was a nice mystery as to where the organization originated from and what they wanted to do in the first few episodes. Plus, Yamaki was kind of intimidating with how he tracked down the kids, warned them to stop doing what they were doing and eventually used that machine to cause the start of the second arc with the first villains the characters were faced. It was really fun to watch and I hope that I'll enjoy the rest of JesuOtaku's videos on Tamers.

I always liked Hypnos, even as ineffective as they were. They had a MiB mystique to them: Mysterious men, cool technology, their speed and stealth. And you got to love how they dress their female technicians :D

Though, I don't think Hypnos was a part of Echelon, though likely inspired by it.

In fact, I don't think they originally dealt with Digimon. I always got the impression they were created to monitor communications networks, and then got stuck fighting Digimon once the problem was discovered.

Fun fact: Hypnos is another Cthulhu Mythos reference. Konaka loves these.

1. It wasn't on The Fox Box. When Tamers came out, Fox Kids was still around and kicking. In fact, it was the last year of their programing block (the weekend lineup had since evaporated).

Fox Box didn't go on the air until 4Kids purchased the program block.
And 4Kids never owned Digimon at any point.

Thankfully so, 4Kids only bought the Time slots, and Disney got the rights to those shows.

I had fond memories of the last year of Fox Kids. Or as a friend once called it: The Year that the Censors Fell Asleep.

Tamers got away with alot of stuff that wouldn't even cut then.

Nostalgia Critic musically reviews Moulin Rogue. NOTE: it's 44 minutes long. Gah!

I myself really despise this movie. Heck, I didn't even want to watch it. But so I did for a film course, because we all endure hard for good grades. I have no interest in romance movies in general, but I watched this rubbish flick, and found it ridiculously overblown with dull characters, a flimsy plot and forgettable songs. I should also mention that I made a double feature out of this with another required film for the course, 28 Days Later. Which I also hated. No offense to those who enjoyed those two movies, but MAN, they didn't work for me.

Holy cow, I didn't expect Brentalfloss to show up, love that man. So, you'd think the addition of that fellow would equal 'best NC review evah!" for me, but eh, it was a 'just okay' ep for me. The film kinda speaks for itself, and well, it's its own parody. And like that accursed film, it goes on too long. That, and I've lost all interest in Nostalgia Chick's participation in anything. (3/5)

Gah! I'm a little fearful to watch it. I love Moulin Rouge. I don't care if it's all flash and little substance, I love, love, love this movie. XD

I just watched the first two seconds and saw the Channel Awesome logo come up. They're not playing around. Combine that with the crossovers reviewers and length that Astrolupine mentioned and that this is said to be one of Doug's least favorite movies. Sounds like a Nostalgia Critic extravaganza.

I actually thought that was a pretty good review. There were a few funny moments, such as going through different locations before settling on one, Kyle's reactions to not being included in the review, the main character of the movie falling in love faster than a Disney princess, the Nostalgia Chick's reaction to the man humiliating the woman and Chester saying that he didn't get a line at the end. Despite its length, it didn't feel too long and the only time I thought that they were padding out the review were with the song when they got to that scene that the NC likes and the last one. Out of all of the songs they did, the one about Guilty Pleasures felt like the most fun for me to listen to.

I've never seen Moulin Rogue myself, but it does look like a really pretty film, although I can't really remember any of the characters names after watching the review.

Ewan MacGregor is Christian and Nicole Kidman is Satine. That's all I remember. I don't recommend it. It really is completely overdone with random shots and weird sequences (The moon singing? The gun bouncing off of the Eiffel Tower?) that think they're really cool and beautiful while they really just pad out a bad script. They hit the nail on the head with this review. It is a weak movie, and I'm glad they did it justice. Great episode with good points and good humor. It was a lot of fun to watch. Outside of Brentalfloss and Nostalgia Chick, I was amazed at the number of cameos. There were Lindsay's friends, Linkara, Spoony, Todd In The Shadows, Brad Jones, Phelous, Kyle from Brow Held High and surely someone I'm missing. Quite a TGWTG ensemble.

I like this direction of crossovers. It's much more interesting to have differing viewpoints on a film for these crossovers than rather just having two people with the same opinion in the same room just saying their different series' personal running gags. The video's at least ten minutes too long, and I'm not sure what to make of the use of "gay" in the otherwise amusing "Guilty Pleasures" song (Knowing these guys, I don't think they meant it in a homophobic manner, but it doesn't seem to work. If it was supposed to be "gay" as "stupid," then it's really unnecessary, and if it's "gay" as "homosexual", then it doesn't make sense in context because while the movie's "gay" in the sense that some scenes read as homoerotic and gay people are stereotypically into musicals, Doug openly praises other musicals and movies with homoerotic subtext, so those wouldn't count as reasons for movies to be guilty pleasures for him), but this is definitely one of the stronger recent Nostalgia Critic episodes. Now if they can attempt to squeeze this crossover format and creativity into a reasonable runtime, preferably under 20 minutes, then I might start to get more into the show again.

I liked the usage of Brentalfloss in this video. It was also nice to see some opposition to the Critic as well, nice change of pace. Never saw this movie but it is on my list of things to watch.

Because of this I'm going to listen to some of my favorite Brentalfloss songs.

Alright, finally saw it and dang, the review was not what I expected (though I should have suspected something from the 44 minute mark). Despite his disdain for the film, I got to hand it to Doug (and the others) for putting a lot of effort into both the music and tone; it honestly works a lot better if one did see the film.

Best moment is definitely Kyle's reaction. Hilarious. But, um, yeah, I liked the review. This makes me want to break out the Moulin Rouge soundtrack actually.

That was the most I've enjoyed a Nostalgia Critic review in a while. Mostly due to Brentalfloss, that "It's Fuuun!" song was great.

I haven't seen Moulin Rouge but i do remember the Critic's hatred for it, as well as how the Rap Critic (irinoically enough along with someone else who wasn't part of the website technically) reviewed this movie already. Though what I remember most from the movie itself was that "Lady Marmalade" song that Lil Kim, Pink, Mya and Christna Aguluira sang for it that... had nothing to do with the movie besides using a song from it that still somehow won best MTV Video of the year. It does seem rather boring and yet overly editted (even more so then the Inspector Gadget movie) with inciredibly clumsy writing. Still it does at least feel more Nostalgiac in a weird way then The Cell since hey at least you'll remember this movie more and the period it came out is defintley nostalgic for some.

Though ultimatley this review works because of how over produced in a sense it was. The whole set up with the song with Linkara (who mentioned on twitter that the green screen he did for this review was a pain to get working actually) trailing into the NC with papers around him which then flashes back to the review. And yeah the actual guest stars being there to give it a different view point and still jork and work around with NC was good. Out of everyone to appear though I was not expecting Brentalfoss as he only has limited connection to the site but hey he defintley did an awesome job with the songs and having a more happy persona to bounce off NC's dour one worked well. Also interesting bringing the Chick along as well. I don't think her bits were as good as Brentalfloss but supririsngly liking the movie except for one sceen that got under her skin worked for me. I think the other cameos were the best part: Spoony randomly popping in, Elisa and Nella singing backup for the chick, Lindsedy trying to sing for Todd (kind of sad he couldn't be a part of this review as a co-reviewer. Eh maybe another one), Phelous's song, Oancitizen being mad at not being included (he should of pointed out NC should at least never do another prentitious artsy movie like the Cell again though as that's his territory) and Brad Jones being mad for listing Paranoia as a guilty pleasure. The actual ending was pretty good as were all the songs and though it did run a little long this was obviously one NC had a lot to say about and the fact time was spent on amusing bits defintley works in this one's favor So yeah really solid crossoever reivew. I guess this was the big crossoever review as there's suppose to be another one in December. I assume it's a smaller one with Phelous as he's the other person beisdes Lupa that NC wanted to cross over with and having a song number he dosen't really count.

An awesome video. I never saw Mulan Rouge, but I can relate with guilty plessures. I know what it is like to like something you shouldn't.

This was the best review in a while. It wasn't just because of the crossover elements (though, believe me, it helped a lot), but because everybody had a great amount of dialogue and banter and the ones that showed up for a little did not over-stay their welcome. Another thing was that NC himself even learned a lesson that even crappy things can be guilty pleasures. But what I liked the most was how the idea of a "musical" was played straight. When I saw "MUSICAL REVIEW" and the time of nearly 45 minutes, I was kinda nervous I would be bored or that every line would be a song. However, I was impressed. They kept it at an even balance of review/dialogue and having songs. They were fun songs too. (IT'S FUUUUUUUUN).

Spoony's cameo was the best. I'm not even sure why. Just that flash of "What the hell" was great. I also liked NChick's sidekicks doing the "repeat the last two syllables of what Chick is saying" and trying to help her get Todd. I've never heard BrentalFloss, but I sure want to. "SPLIBBITY-FLOBBY-FLOO"

As for the movie itself, I think it's something I probably wouldn't like but I almost feel like giving it a try now.

Ah, 2001...the last year before Nicole Kidman ruined her face with botox. :crying:

I didn't hate Moulin Rouge (as Lindsay points out, the aggrivating editing scheme calms down a tad as the movie progresses), but it's seriously not very good, even as far as guilty pleasures go. And I forgot Kidman was Oscar nominated for this. Especially since she delivered a much better performance in a much better movie (The Others) the very same summer.

Finally got done with Part 2 of the Digimon Tamers retrospective. Finally, a section which can flow better in a review.

While others may decry the length, Tamers has ALOT of material to cover. The different formats, the character development, the world building, battles, and plots.

Even with the amount of time spent, this is still the Cliff Notes version of the show. And its all interconnected, for each one influences the other.

So far, except for the "Fox Box" sanfu, I'm greatly enjoying JO talk about this.

Here's JesuOtaku's third part of Part One of her retrospective on Digimon Tamers:

http://blip.tv/jesuotaku/digimon-tamers-part-one-3-5782593

I'm not too surprised that the story is going to be cut into four parts. Like Gatomon41 mentioned, there is a lot of material to cover with just its storyline. Not to mention all of the character development, which I imagine will be even longer than her character rundown for Adventures 01. I thought that this part of the retrospective was fun to watch. I remember how surprised I was at how different the Digital World was in Tamers compared to how it was in both Adventures and 02 when I first watch the episode where the kids go into the Digital World. It did seem pretty cool though and I liked how they changed it around a bit.

I never knew about Ryo's story in the game. It sounded kind of confusing with the whole time traveling aspect, but also pretty darn cool. It makes me kind of wish I could play that game, but I've never been that good at Digimon video games. That does explain why he has a partner at Ultimate level. I always thought that was kind of weird when I first saw the series.

I forgot about how the kids stopped uploading data by a certain point in the hopes that it would somehow reform back into a Digimon to give it another chance of life. The fact that the Devas see that more as an insult rather than an act of kindness was kind of interesting. Making the connection between Impmon and the legend of the cat from the Chinese Zodiac was also an interesting point that I didn't think of. Although, I don't think I knew about that story until I watched Fruits Basket. The next video segment of Part One should be pretty intense considering what she's going to cover in the last arc. I'm really excited for that part of the review and especially the character development segments of the Digimon Tamers review.

For this Christmas season, Doug is taking a page out of James Rolfe's Monster Madness book. However, rather than reviewing a new horror movie every day in October, he's going to be reviewing each and every one of the major animated Disney films one by one each day in December. This is Disneycember!

Doug starts off Disneycember by proving that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is indeed one of the fairest films of all.

Disneycember continues as Doug has no strings to hold down his opinion on Pinocchio.

Doug conducts a Disneycember orchestra when he takes a look at Fantasia.

Obscurus Lupa decks the halls with pepperoni when she takes on We Wish You a Turtle Christmas.

I really love this idea. I love disney movies, and Doug usually provides a lot of insight into whatever he reviews. I can't wait for him to get to some of my favourites. Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King.

Should be very entertaining.

To celebrate the fact that I got three weeks off from work for rest, I watched today the latest installment in the separate Minions series of movies. What I loved was the unique logo variation of the Universal logo, which was akin to the plot taking place in the late 1800s
