A BRAND NEW YEAR OF ADVENTURES BEGINS HERE!

The Guardian of the Spaceways returns for more evil-thwarting action in an all-new series - kicking off with the first appearance of a classic Space Ghost villain!

Acclaimed author DAVID PEPOSE and visionary artist JONATHAN LAU reunite to reach for the stars in Space Ghost #1 — boosted by solid-fueled covers from FRANCESCO MATTINA, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, BJORN BARENDS, and MICHAEL CHO!

Synopsis for Issue #2:

Will activating the strange relic help the team to escape from Parko's wrath — or will it doom them all?

#1: Nice general recap of season 1 while Space Ghost takes on Toymaker, another pull from Space Stars - guess that will continue for the time being. Ghost and Blip make a pretty good team.

#2: Parko being a mob boss than a rogue scientist was... a choice.

Eclipse Woman is an old flame in this canon? Heh. Stole the Power Band prototype and now a nice way to reconnect the cast, she breaks into Contra. Definitely felt their dynamic was totally inspired by Batman and Catwoman.

And Starbeast! Boy the power band always comes in handy.

Now, millennia later, his frozen form has been discovered in a block of ice and once he thaws out, he'll find a whole new galaxy ripe for conquest! Can Space Ghost and company stop this time-lost warrior from wreaking havoc upon the future? Or will our heroes find themselves on the wrong end of Tarko's blade?

It's been fun seeing a lot of the more obscure Space Ghost villains in this volume, but now Dr. Contra's presence in the series since the Annual pays off as he becomes the Antimatter Man. Dr. Cyclo's ultimate fate was creepy, even if he deserved it. There was some good pacing as Space Ghost figures out Contra was the murderer right away, but kept it from Jan and Jace.

I really liked the Dr. Croker nod.

While I still overall like Lau's art overall, this is the second design I'm not a fan of. I thought Eclipse Woman looked too padded and bulky and Antimatter Man doesn't look as interesting when he's just a living shadow.

David Pepose gave a shout out for one of my recent "This Week in Comics" articles:

Is this the final issue of this series?!?

I admit I was kind of tuning out a bit for this season, but between the Antimatter Man two-parter and this season finale, I'm excited to see what's next for this creative team. There's a bit of a formula here with it being the main villain bringing together the season's villains to stop the heroes from his ultimate plan. But this time there was a good emotional hook, between Space Spectre's return and involvement and the big reveal behind Tempus.

I like that they gave a reason for Tarko to join Tempus's Time Tyrants instead of just randomly joining the villain group.

Eclipse Woman flirting with Space Spectre is a bit weird especially considering Jace is in the same room, but it's also a funny pay-off to what she told him in his previous appearance. Speaking of Jace, he's probably the most traumatized member of the cast. His dad died, he thought he killed Zorak, he found and lost his grandpa, and he met his anti-heroic future self who he also saw die.

The cameos by the Space Force were fun and didn't feel like they were overstaying their welcome. Just pure fun. I wish the solicits didn't spoil them, but they DID keep a surprise in Tempus's true identity: Thaddeus Bach AKA the Space Ghost from the 2005 mini-series by DC. It's a risky move to make him the main villain. But I think he's more of a variant, since he doesn't seem to have adopted Jan and Jace. Maybe the comic is making the point that without them, he couldn't overcome his grief for his dead family and fell into darkness.
Is this the final issue of this series?!?

Apparently we're getting a second Annual, followed by a crossover special Space Ghost vs. Herculoids, which is apparently leading to a Volume/Season 3!

"Space Ghost Meets The Herculoids in Comic Crossover this September, from Dynamite Comics"

SG-Hercthumb.jpg

"The nature of comic books allows creators to explore concepts that would be hard to pull off in live action or in animation. But when comic creators pull it off, it’s a work of art, or at least it’s a pop culture celebration. When it comes to Saturday morning cartoons, we’ve had standard fare like Transformers vs. GI Joe, and earlier this year we had Thundercats vs Silverhawks. Now the next classic cartoon crossover is lined up for September: it’s Space Goat vs. the Herculoids!

The team up makes sense – both Space Ghost and the Herculoids were part of Hanna Barbera’s line of action cartoons in the late 60s (and in reruns together for years after that). Both shows were set in space, one involving a space vigilante becoming a surrogate father (of sorts), all while battling pirates and world conquerors, the other involving a lost family carving out a home for themselves in a corner of the universe. You can tell these two sides are going to come to blows, right? Besides, a team up with Jonny Quest (the other HB action cartoon of the era), wouldn’t work as well.

Creators David Pepose and Jonathan Lau, the creative team that’s worked on Space Ghost for the last 2 years, are returning to work on this crossover. This upcoming miniseries will serve as the bridge to the next volume of Space Ghost."

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
