San Diego Comic-Con Animation Schedule - Updated!
Comic-Con International is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. Each year Animation has a growing presence at the San Diego Comic Con. This year numerous animated projects will be spotlighted in various panels hosted by industry insiders. Here is the official schedule for all animation panels for the 2002 San Diego Comic Con, August 1-4.

1:30 History of Animation 1: The Early Years 1900–1925–We showcase some of the greats in animation in this four-part series, each day of Comic-Con. We start with the "Fathers and Pioneers of Animation," featuring the works of: J. Stuart Blackton (Humorous Phases of a Funny Face); Emile Cohl (Fantasmagorie), Winsor McCay (Little Nemo—hand colored, Gertie the Dinosaur, Sinking of the Lusitania); Raul Barre (Mutt & Jeff), Paul Terry (Aesop's Fables) the Fleischer Brothers (Koko the Clown); Otto Messmer (Feline Follies—first Felix the Cat) and others. 3:00 MTV: Clone High Preview–Sixteen years ago, a renegade band of evil scientists extracted the DNA from history’s most celebrated personalities (Abe Lincoln, JFK, and Cleopatra, to name just a few) and cloned them. The results would change the world and its television schedule forever. Nelvana and MTV present a breakthrough as big as human cloning itselfæthe animated teen comedy Clone High. Clone High will tell stories that deal with real teen issues while poking fun at the style and melodrama seen in Dawson’s Creek and Beverly Hills 90210. On hand to talk about this new show are the youngest showrunners in Hollywood history: Phil Lord (the one with big, curly hair) and Christopher Miller (the other one). Room 6A
3:00 Cartoon Cool!–Hear boppin' cartoon music by Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, and Shorty Rogers! See sleek art direction by Maurice Noble, Walt Peregoy, and Paul Julian! Dig wild animation by Rod Scribner, Fred Crippen, and Jim Tyer! It's a cartoon screening unlike any other. Featuring an eclectic selection of animated shorts from the 50s and 60s, this show takes us back to a time when animation walked with style and played with a smooth attitude. Animation Blast editor Amid Amidi will introduce these rare and terrific cartoons, directed by the likes of Chuck Jones, Ernie Pintoff, John Hubley, Gene Deitch, Norman McLaren, and Bill Melendez. 400 Stan Lee: Stripperella–Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee and superstar Pamela Anderson have joined forces to bring a new animated series to prime-time television. Striperella is a comedy action-adventure series that focuses on a female super-secret-agent. Posing undercover as stripper Erotica Jones at an elite gentleman's club, Striperella goes up against a rogue's gallery of larger-than-life villains. This series is set to premiere next dpring as part of the New TNN's animation block. Appearing to discuss this new show are Stan Lee, TNN president Albie Hecht, supervising producer Kevin Altieri (Batman:The Animated Series), and executive producers/writers Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert. 5:30 25 Years of Anime and Manga Fandom–Japanese giant-robot cartoons first appeared on American Japanese-community TV channels in 1976. In May 1977 the first American fan club for anime was created. On this 25th anniversary year, experts look at how the popularity of anime has grown in America. The panel consists of fans from its earliest days and representatives of today's anime industry. Join moderator Fred Patten (anime historian; anime columnist for Animation World Magazine), Don Yee (president, Cartoon/Fantasy Organization fan club), Fred Ladd (producer of the first Americanized TV anime in the 1960s: Astro Boy, Gigantor, and Kimba, the White Lion), Laurine White (president, Anime Sacramento fan club), and Jerry Chu (marketing manager, Bandai Entertainment Inc.). 10:00 Bill Plympton’s Mutant Aliens–Comic-Con proudly presents the new film from cartoonist/animator Bill Plympton. Mutant Aliens is animated in the wild style of Bill’s previous endeavors. If you’re a fan of Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation Festival, you’ll flip for Mutant Aliens! Bill will be on hand to introduce the film. 11:00 Disney: Treasure Planet–Producer Roy Conli, producer/director/writer John Musker, and other key members of the Treasure Planet creative team will present an exclusive first look at scenes from this extraordinary Disney animated space adventure, due for release this November. Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told—Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson—Treasure Planet is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the acclaimed writing/directing team responsible for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules. The series will air on Cartoon Network only during Toonami, the network’s afternoon action-adventure franchise. 10:00 Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation–In a land of ultra-PC conservatism, Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation is the Mecca for those seeking rude, crude, and completely lewd animated short films. Spike and Mike, the guys who first brought you Beavis and Butt-Head, South Park, Rugrats, and Wallace & Gromit, are back and ready to unleash their 2002 collection. Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation gives a home to animated short films that are too crass, repugnant, or scathing to be seen anywhere else. Tonight you can expect a host of brand-new short animated films and a few returning favorites. Among other not-to-miss titles are Nougat, a sad tale of revenge for that often forgotten and misunderstood candy ingredient; Pickle's Day Out, in which a pickle and tomato share their opposing views of religion; Cooking with Bigfoot, as Bigfoot gets in the holiday spirit by mixing it up with Fred Durst and Eminem; some new vignettes from cult animator Bill Plympton; and many, many more! 10:30 Writing Animated Features–Some of the top animation writers working today will discuss what it's like to write features. Topics will include developing the stories and writing the scripts, being faithful to the original story, working with story artists and directors, the production process, time and money, and more. Panelists include Terry Rossio (Shrek, Aladdin, Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, Mulan), J. David Stem (Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, The Rugrats Movie), and moderator Len Uhley (Land Before Time VII, American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island). Room 7A
11:30 Spotlight on Craig McCracken: Behind the Scenes of The Powerpuff Girls Movie–Cartoon Network's most powerful stars leapt to the silver screen this summer when The Powerpuff Girls—Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup—made their feature film debut on July 3. Join Craig McCracken and his team for some special behind-the-scenes footage and insight into the world's cutest superheroes. The panel will be moderated by Mike Lazzo, senior VP of programming and production for Cartoon Network and will include storyboard artist Lauren Faust and composer James L. Venable, along with director/creator McCracken. Room 6A
12:30 Voice Acting Workshop–If you love to have fun with your voice, or if you've ever wanted to do voice-over for animation or commercials, this workshop is for you! In this workshop, you'll learn some basic voice and acting techniques you can use in many areas of your personal life. You'll learn how to create interesting and believable characters with your voice, how to place your voice in different parts of your body, and some of the secrets professional voice actors use to sustain a character over a long period of time. This workshop is taught by James R. Alburger, author of The Art of Voice Acting, professional voice actor, voice-acting and performance coach, commercial producer/director, and owner of The Commercial Clinic in San Diego (www.voiceacting.com). <b>Update: 7.29.02</b> -- Toon Zone has been informed that the Voice Acting Workshop will include an appearance by voice actor Wally Wingert (Invader Zim, Family Guy, Transformers: RiD) as well as a performance by one of Toon Zone's own staff members, Craig Crumpton (aka: "Gookie" and "Voiceroy") who will perform 32 character voices in 4.5 minutes sometime during the last half-hour of the workshop.

1:00 Lady Death: The Anime–Join Carl Macek and Andy Orjuela of ADV Films as they discuss ADV’s production of the animated version of Chaos Comics’ Lady Death. Macek, whose long background in the animation industry has included serving as story editor and producer for Harmony Gold's groundbreaking anime adaptation Robotech, is the screenwriter, producer, and director of this animated Lady Death. Orjuela is producer and art director for the film,redesigning and creating original character designs and overseeing the production in Houston and at Sunmin Studios in Korea. Room 8

4:30 Animation Filmmakers: The Next Generation–Today's young animators are pushing the art form to new and unprecedented heights as they explore all types of exciting styles, techniques, and stories. Here's a rare opportunity to meet some of today's most talented young animators/directors, including Gabe Swarr (Big Pants Mouse), Jorge Gutierrez (El Macho), Anders Beer (Los Gringos). and others for a screening of their films and a lively discussion about the future of cartoons. 5:30 Cartoon Network: Adult Swim–Cartoon Network's Adult Swim brings you the best in animation for adults with special sneak peeks and a panel discussion of two of their break-out hits. Harvey Birdman, 1960s superhero-turned-lawyer, continues to tackle some of the most controversial cases on behalf of his famous clients. Legal Eagle indeed! And from the creators of Space Ghost come Aqua Teen Hunger Force, an absurd series of surreal adventures of three detectives—who happen to be human-sized food products—as they bumble their way through mysteries and pass the time swimming in their neighbor's pool. 5:30 History of Animation 3: The Golden Age 1937–1945–Disney sets the style in Part 3 of our 4-day History of Animation. In this era, Warner Bros developed its "Termite Terrace," an answer to Disney’s style, and the early Tex Avery/Bob Clampett/Chuck Jones classics. The studio strikes affected Schlesinger, the Fleischer Brothers, and Disney. Included is a look at animation through the war years (Private Snafu) and beyond, with John Hubley’s new style (Flat Hatting) and others. 11:00 Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles–In 1999, Sony-Tristar released Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, a CGI series that broke new ground in computer graphics and sophisticated storytelling for television. Based on the classic Robert Heinlein novel and the Paul Verhoeven feature film, Roughnecks has gained a whole new audience thanks to the release of two new DVD's (Klendathu and Homefront). This program reunites the creative team responsible for the series and includes an episode and Q&A. 2:00 Spike and Mike’s Best of the Fest 25th Anniversary Show–For the past 25 years Spike and Mike have been showcasing the finest animation the world has ever seen. They’ve become an institution among festivals and are synonymous with premiering groundbreaking animation films. It all started with one 16mm show at Riverside City College, and since then they’ve gone on to screen at the Cannes, Sundance, and Annecy film festivals. They were even referenced in an episode of The Simpsons! This program represents some of the cream of the crop from the past 25 years. including works by Nick Park, Will Vinton, Bill Plympton, and the king of stop-motiion animation, John Lasseter. In this workshop, you'll learn some basic voice and acting techniques you can use in many areas of your personal life. You'll learn how to create interesting and believable characters with your voice, how to place your voice in different parts of your body, and some of the secrets professional voice actors use to sustain a character over a long period of time.
