Revolution controller revealed

Jesus, Matt, do you ever have anything positive to say?
bcuz then the balance of chaos and uniformity would be destroyed....

If its anything like that lightsaber VR game that wasnt very popular, ill probably like it.

I have a feeling this is going to be the next Sidetalkin'...

When I saw this last night, I just kind of sat there in stunned silence as I let the disappointment sink in. This was the cause of all the hype? This was the reason for all the secrecy? I half expected Jesus to be the controller, not some extremely hokey gimmick. Way to go Nintendo. Way to go.

You know that in Japan. The PS3 might be in trouble.

First, the DS was a WTH too but again who is winning in sales and it's not the PSP.

Second, Revolution has the same philosophy. It's a WTH in the beginning but see what's might happen.

I was shocked about the controller first. I was W.T.F. about it. Again, when I saw the developpers positively talk (and even Hideo Kojima and Square-Enix are praising the Revolution). it could be a Revolution.

Now the ball is on the 3rd party. The NDA is finished (fully if not partly).

The more I thought about much of an odd controller choice this was, I decided to avoid speculating what a pile of crap or how kick-ass it could be. I remember what happened with Wind Waker and the taste of my own words doesn't exactly entice me.

Holy cow...

This looks to be the most fun piece of total crap that I might not not have no fun hardly all the time with when I decide how crappy this totally awesome controller may or may not not become when I do not not ever purchase this if I never don't.

Uh... yeah... that's my thought...

No thanks Nintendo, i don't like gimmick looking controlers, PS3 controllers are SO much better and the 360 even has better and i'm not a big fan of Microsoft's controllers.

CONS:

The ridiculousness of it looking like a TV remote.

PROS:

Everything else.

Pretty good controller. Perhaps the best reason why to buy a Nintendo Revolution if you want one. The TV remote concept will open new doors to the world of video gaming. And it's a way better controller than PS3's two-banana handles and XBOX 360's white drip!

Sony & Microsoft, watch out!

So, you just want the next round of consoles to be exactly the same as this one, just with better graphics? Yeah, I'm sure that'll warrant the $400+ those'll cost.

Hey everybody! Remember this:

The N64 controller looked weird too...until Nintendo made it work for Mario 64. And Mario 64 set the standards for platformers, hell GAMES today. So if Nintendo can make the next Mario, Zelda, and Metriod games work with this new controller and show off it's functionality, I think they'll be alright.

I do wish they'll add a dock on with full circle A,B,X,Y buttons though, to please all the whiner babies.

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.
For those who have concerns about porting games. :p

Curt, have you forgotten ? original and innovative isn't cool any more !!! you have to be the same and bland because you might scare away all those people who automatically glance at something and totally reject if it isn't famillar to them.

The Sony and Microsoft game making philosophy is this:

1. Never be original

2. Put features over gameplay

3. And if both fail, just copy off Nintendo.

I have no idea. I really have no positive or negative things to say about this, it's just too confusing.

Certainly, though, backward compatibility is really just a mystery now as far as I'm concerned. I'm not extremely worried about it, but I am thinking that maybe emulation wins again. (Just like it won when the old TMNT arcade game was included with that new TMNT game but had to have new music and sounds due to copyright issues.)

From a business standpoint, if the controller does turn out to be amazing, I feel like no amount of people saying "No, it's actually really cool!" will be able to convince "normal" people (a.k.a. idiots) that it's not a stupid piece of crap that makes no sense.

Why not? Every round of consoles is the same as the last only with better graphics, even during the change to 3D which only introduced a couple of NEW genres. Seeing as genres are invented on PC before they come over to the consoles, let's take a look at what's.. oh that's right, PC gaming is even more stagnant than console gaming right now. Seeing as platform games, driving games, fighting games, first person shooters, and their ilk are still fun to normal people, I don't see what's so wrong with staying the course.

If Nintendo wants to make a bunch of parlor games like cooking with the Revolution that will have 1 hour of gameplay repeated over and over again (like Yoshi's Touch and Go) and offer absolutely no challenge whatsoever (like.. ALL NINTENDO GAMECUBE TITLES) then I guess I can't stop them. But that just cements in my mind which company NOT to go with. Since Nintendo is making a system that's not for gamers, call it crazy if I, a gamer, am not interested.

Wow, crazy controller! Now I can safely say that Nintendo is full of wierdos!

I'm not one to pass judgement this soon so I'll have to try it myself to see how it will work. Who knows? It could be fun!

Nope, there isn't one single, even remotely difficult game for the GC. Nosirree.

Seriously, though, I've noticed that every single criticism people have levied against this new controller is either A) Misinformed or B) Obviously born of a general malevolence towards Nintendo. I was aghast at the controller design at first, but now that I'm aware of what it's capable of, I'm excited as hell. It will be surprisingly capable of mimicking traditional control methods, and offer something entirely new on top of that.

I can't wait to try an FPS with this thing. Just thinking about it is awesome.

So this is the revolutionary controller? A remote control? Wow. Talk about alienating your 3rd parties. The thing doesn't even look comfortable. Also, I love how everyone was quick to bash the PS3 controller but say "Don't judge the revolutionary remote until you feel it yourself!" Please. I have a remote and my playstation controller, which is enough for me to chalk this up as one of Nintendo's new and improved gimmicks.

Not to mention the fact that the Revolution won't be getting any multiplatform releases. Seriously, so far the only redeeming quality of the Revolution is it's backwards compatibility with its previous systems. Other than that I'll stick with the PS3 and 360 for my next-gen gaming needs.

Heh, I bet even with the controller, it'll still be the cheapest system.
Not after having to buy the start and select buttons for $29.95. But at least Nintendo's gracious enough to include an analog stick with the system. Pigs will fly before I buy some buttons for my videogame controller.

I really was hoping Nintendo would step it up for the next gen. The system looks sleak, they finally converted to dvds & backwards compatibility. All those pros yet the fact that they always gotta be "innovative" is what's gonna lead to them being in 3rd place again. God bless them for trying, but when will they actually come up with a GOOD innovative idea?

Imagine playing "Zelda" using that control, instead of just having an analog stick, you can use this remote to act your doing the actual stabbing and slashing. That whould be aboslutely amazing.

*points to previous post about the Classic-Shell adaptor that will make multiplatform games a breeze. But no one seemed to care when I posted it then, even though it was mentioned in the keynote speech and in every article I've read so far...*

Er, start and select are on the actual remote. So unless that's sarcasm that went over my head...

I think everybody also ignored the post I made about major 3rd party developers praising the remote.
