The "Nintendo Switch 2" News and Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Furukawa has confirmed that the new console is indeed backwards compatible with the Switch.

Nintendo Switch Online will also be supported on the new console.

This indicates we will be seeing a system transfer app that allows players to transfer their OG Switch data to the new console.

I'm kind of surprised that they just announced this out of the blue. I'm glad that they confirmed that it will be backwards compatible with the Switch and it makes sense given how successful the console is. I just would have expected them to save that detail for the proper reveal instead of right now.

"Backwards Compatibility Finally Confirmed For Switch 2"

"Nintendo still isn’t ready to reveal the Switch 2, but they did finally confirm one major detail everyone has been wondering about. The news was delivered by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa online late yesterday evening.

“This is Furukawa,” he tweeted, “At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.” Can’t get clearer than that. You won’t have to start your physical collection over again.

There was more: “Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”

While backwards compatibility on Switch 2 has been assumed for a while, no one knew for certain what would happen with Nintendo Switch Online. Since this is Nintendo we’re dealing with, they could have just started the library over and drip-fed the same games starting day 1. It’s fortunate we’re being spared that."

As much as fans want to hear about the new system, the Switch is still huge, so I doubt that Nintendo is in any rush, especially when they can use that time to have more games available at launch too.

They're also obviously clearly traumatized by the transition from the Wii to the Wii U, so there's no doubt intense pressure to get it right.

Yes, Nintendo don't want to repeat the mistakes with Wii U.

In 100 days, the Switch successor will officially be revealed.

However, it could be revealed earlier, especially given all the recent leaks that happened this month.

"The Switch 2 Is The Worst Kept Secret Of 2025"

"Knowing everything about a console before it’s revealed is not a new phenomenon — Microsoft almost seems to encourage it — but it is new for a place like Nintendo. By far the most secretive of all the video game companies, they guard their secrets with fortress-like security and usually succeed…they’re one of the few who can surprise-drop a big new video game one to two months before release.

But then there’s the Switch 2. It has been in development for quite a while. Developers have possessed dev kits for over a year now. The system has allegedly been finalized and consumer-ready for quite some time, but delayed over the production of software and producing enough units for launch. With all that said, perhaps it’s not that surprising they’ve barely been able to keep a lid on it lately. But it is new to know pretty much everything before Nintendo talks about it.

Here’s what’s out there: the Switch 2 will be slightly larger overall, with a bigger screen. it will use refined Joy-Cons that attach to the system magnetically, and use different sticks that should hopefully eliminate the “stick drift” problem. The right Joy-Con has one extra button labeled “C” that no one knows what is for yet."

Nintendo has an investor meeting in February, where they lay out what's in store for the next fiscal year.

They've already waited out the clock as much as they could. The window for showing off the thing is shrinking.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announce the Switch 2 this month. Waiting until March wouldn't be impossible, but with all of the rumors going around, it would probably be more beneficial for Nintendo to announce it sooner rather than later. It also will give them more time to promote the system and new games for it too. I can't blame them for waiting this long to announce it. The Switch is still selling like hot cakes and taking more time to have more games available at launch would ideally help everyone in the long run, but people have been pretty eager for a Switch 2 reveal for at least a year at this point.

I think this will be another soft-launch like when Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 with a limited range of games, likely to control supply issues and build up a library of games and inventory, and ramp up advertising ready for the holiday season. I remember when the Switch first launched, people complained about the lack of games, but with the use of a similar hardware (making it easier to develop for existing Switch game developers) and with backward compatibility this time for the Switch 2, this will be less so.

Nintendo has an ongoing contract with Nvidia to use their Tegra processors based on ARM's architecture, so backwards compatiblity with the Switch shouldn't be a problem.

There’s only three more months left for Nintendo to officially announce the next generation of Nintendo Switch.

It’s likely that we could get even more news on the new console in February, given how both the investor meeting and the Direct take place in the same month frame, and Nintendo stated back in November that they would be showing more info on the system at a later date.

I don't know whenever Nintendo is going to reveal next-gen successor to Switch with all current Nintendo leadership, so they are very super secretive nowadays. That's not like 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2011 with GameCube, Wii (formerly Revolution), 3DS and Wii U when they announced in very advance.

Nintendo isn't same after Satoru Iwata is gone.

Okay, I'll just toss out my prediction: They'll reveal the "Switch 2" in the next 2 weeks.

I said back in early November that if they don't reveal it before mid November, they're saving it for early next year. And yes, they could wait all the way until the end of March to reveal it.....but they're not going to. I think we'll have it revealed by January 25th.

I'll also toss out my prediction on a release date. It'll be.....May.

They'll have a trailer revealed in the next 2 weeks, then a Nintendo Direct in February showing just new stuff coming to the regular Switch (with maybe the reveal of 4 or 5 games coming at launch for the Switch 2).

Then the Switch 2 system comes out in, let's say, the first half of May, and then come "Summer Gamefest/E3/Nintendo Direct" season in the summer, Nintendo has a big blow out Nintendo Direct (sometime in June) showing what games are coming in the 2nd half of 2025.

Assume these leaks are true I can’t see them holding off the trailer any longer or at least it wouldn’t be smart of them to

I thought that they'd save the Swtich 2 reveal for a Nintendo Direct. I think that they did that for the Switch's reveal, but I'm not sure. Releasing a trailer and then saving a Nintendo Direct to showcase new games for both system next month would make sense too. I definitely can't see them waiting until March to officially reveal the Switch 2.

I could see it coming out in May, but I'm leading towards a June release. Having it out during summer time could result in better sales, especially if they have some big titles coming out at the same time. I definitely expect them to save some big titles for their Holiday season though.

Don’t forget about 2016 when the Switch was first announced (it was formerly NX).

Ok, I was unclear about NX (Switch) so I left out to avoid the confusion.

I do think that Nintendo is super secretive because they don't want to depress on Switch sales, so they wait longer as much as they can until ready to reveal.

So many of the leaks/rumors panned out, including the date of the reveal, the way the logo would look, the new way that Joy-Cons attached, seemingly the mouse-like capabilities, the new button ("C" in the rumors but blank here)...

It's definitely a bigger, better Switch, which is a welcome sight. I don't think the wheel was in dire need of being reinvented here, and the current hardware is feeling pretty long in the tooth.

More observant people than me noticed that there were 24 racers in the Mario Kart footage: double the usual! The teaser also noted that some Switch games may not be compatible. I'm wondering if that's Labo-type experiences that expect the screen / Joy-Cons / whatever to be a particular size.

I can't wait to see more in the Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd, although I'm sure we'll have plenty of game announcements (even if it's only from third-parties) between now and then.

Nintendo has announced some hands-on experiences:

North America
New York - April 4-6, 2025
Los Angeles - April 11-13, 2025

About time that Nintendo would reveal the new console before the end of March.

I am eager to see what games will be presented in the Switch 2 direct?
