MeTV Toons - Network TALKBACK & Discussion Thread

On the topic of current MeTV Toons vs current Boomerang, their primetime lineups are both pretty stagnant, except for Boomerang overairing Flintstones rather than Looney Tunes. At least they give Captain Planet prime time exposure, which is probably not the fan favorite when it comes to post 1980 cartoons. I'd say streaming beats both MeTV Toons and current Boomerang in terms of the optimal way to watch retro toons.

Happy first anniversary to MeTV Toons. To celebrate the occasion I wrote an article for the front page of AnimeSuperhero.com.

MeTV Toons: Year One In Review

MeTV Toons, the American broadcast television network owned and operated by Weigel Broadcasting in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery has now been operating for a full year. As most viewers know, its programming consists of mainly older cartoons, ranging from classic animated shorts from Fleischer, MGM Studios, Walter Lantz and of course, Warner Bros, to other animated shows ranging from the 60s to the 90s. A few modern toons from the 2000s onwards have made it to the channel as well, which might seem a bit of a random choice but the shows picked fit in well enough with the rest of the programming.

Remember this pre-launch promotional spot?

From the beginning the channel seemed to be taking its cues from previous projects like the Cartoon Network, or Boomerang in their formative years. The difference here is that MeTV Toons has no plans to introduce new, original animation as the aforementioned networks started developing throughout the decades. So do not expect a new wave of “What A Cartoons!” or whatever they may be called, from this channel.

Between all their partners right now, their access to 80's cartoons is limited. They already have WB's biggest 80's cartoon, Smurfs, and Sony's biggest 80's cartoon, Real Ghostbusters. And TMNT is coming.

There has to be a reason Thundercats isn't on. Maybe rights are tied up because of Hulu.

Could they realistically try to strike a deal with Hasbro to get the 80's Transformers and GI Joe?

MeTV Toons will officially be coming to DirecTV on June 30 as part of a multi-year carriage deal. MeTV Toons will be available for the Choice and above customers, as well as inside DIRECTV’s new genre packs.

There's a typo I've found in the article. SilverHawks is spelled as SilverHwaks.

It's more that Flintstones and Looney Tunes are more cross generational. When TV was may more rerun friendly. A 90's /2000's kid would have just as much viewing of those as a 70's or 80's kid, because they ran that long on local TV, on abc, on Nick, on CN. Plus they read the room when they saw people get mad that Max was dropping some or all Looney Tunes. I think that's harder with 80's cartoons to achieve older people would probably be turned off, some were probably the ones who called the FCC being mad that many of them were toy based shows. The younger ones like my era are maybe not as invested in them because of the 90's were filled with their own cartoons to the brim. Same thing with many 80's people who find 90's stuff to by annoying or not their thing.

Though maybe Looney Tunes shouldn't be two hours, but I think that's their window dressing to get people into the shop of the channel. I understand your point too, but there is always a business decision to these matters.

If the daily wire was able to acquire gi Joe for their failure of a service then I'm sure weigel could eventually get the rights. It's certainly far easier then getting animaniacs or anything Disney has locked up from various aquisitions back in the day (for example Disney still owns eek the cat dispite literally nothing being done with that show since Disney acquired the fox kids library in the early 2000s)

That's one thing I absolutely despise: Companies buying up properties and then throwing them in a vault never to be seen again. That was never what intellectual property was meant for, and yet here we are with so many succumbed to that fate. There ought to be a law about nonsense like that.

Neal Sabin didn't call Disney "Mission Impossible" for nothing.

The 90's is also a tough decade to represent. Most of the big shows of that decade are Disney/Disney-owned, made for cable networks, or the expensive WB/Amblin or DCAU shows. You lose a lot of possibilities by weeding those out.

90s cartoons that would be cool to have:

Men in Black: The Series
Swat Kats
Pirates of Dark Water
Beast Wars
Extreme Ghostbusters
The 90s video game cartoons
Street Sharks
Extreme Dinosaurs
Mummies Alive
Jumanji: The Animated Series
The New Adventures of Zorro
Oggy and the Cockroaches
Robocop: Alpha Commando
The Lionhearts
Toxic Crusaders

You guys think they might expand the selection of anime at some point to maybe include syndicated dubs from the 80s? I would totally freak if they added Robotech to the lineup.

A birthday gift. Would make sense if they launched it today but who cares, it's coming this Monday!

Someone pointed out something kinda strange concerning MeTV Toons and Directv. First, it's definitely happening/happened. If you go to 295, it hasn't been added yet. It's supposed to be added on June 30. But if you go to the menu/guide and type "MeTV Toons" in the smart search, you can go to 295 and watch it.

That's a big deal.

That shows the channel is doing well enough to pick up steam.

TMNT might be their big draw card for the fall it seems like.

If they get Pirates of Dark Water maybe they'll only air it on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, as direct competition to Once Piece on Adult Swim.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
