I believe Craig said the Disney XD wanted a third season of Wander Over Yonder as well, but their higher ups told to that 43 episodes were enough.
After seeing how abruptly and suddenly Disney management did a complete 180 degree turn and cancelled Disney Infinity after saying they would support it a month earlier, I can actually see how something like this could happen.
I can't hold ill feelings towards Disney XD, not after they did so much for action animation while every other network was actively
purging action from their time slots.
I'm honestly not surprised that WOY, RC, and 7D got cancelled. Good promotion or not, the shows were never a big hit in their first season. Networks all over don't want to sit around and wait to see if the shows ratings will get better or not, especially for animation due to the long production process. Usually by the time the show airs, half of the crew is off on other projects or gone entirely because they already wrapped up work on the season.
As fun as WOY was in the first season, this show didn't get more popular until the second season (no doubt thanks to Lord Dominator). If the fanbase for the show was as strong then as it was now, it'd likely have gotten a third season.
Now, it feels as though to get to a third season, a cartoon needs a substantial fan base
before the first episode airs. Star vs. The Forces of Evil had that before it premiered, yet other shows like Wander and Penn Zero did not in comparison, so Star got a third season but the other two didn't. It is as though the standard now is how much you can build up a cartoon in the months before its premiere, rather than wait for the first season ratings as it used to be.
As for issues concerning acquired programming: I don't know why networks bother to pick up shows and give it lousy timeslots and little promotion. Maybe it's a matter of budgets concerning their marketing. Maybe it's a matter of priorities. Maybe there's some LAW that a network is required to pick up third party programming. I wish I knew!
As for acquiring shows, I wonder about some of Disney XD's decisions myself.
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir airs on the Disney Channels in many of the international markets, yet for the U.S., Disney XD was unwilling to acquire the third party show for their channel? I would like to know if Disney really did have an offer to air the show and turned it down, but for right now, it is only rumors. Also, you would have thought reading about
Doraemon when it first aired in the U.S., Disney XD thought it was going to be a popular show, yet it has not worked out that way at all.
I was just gonna create a thread on this topic! While I don't dislike Disney XD yet, I recently became frustrated with the network for some of the same reasons that are already mentioned. I was also upset because I felt that Disney XD is giving too much attention to Star vs. the Forces of Evil, perhaps more than any other animated series currently on the network, and pandering to the show's fans.
Networks have long played favorites, so that is not surprising. It's just that some networks air more of the same programming than others. And you can probably go ahead and say the Ducktales and the Big Hero 6 animated series will be treated with favoritism when they air on Disney XD in 2017 too.
