How many times has SpongeBob aired since 2005? I have the numbers.

As some of you may know, I have been collecting Nickelodeon's TV schedule for many years now. I figured I would put some of that info to use.

People always talk about how much SpongeBob SquarePants is aired on Nick. Well I have some numbers for you. Today, I have spent a lot of time going through each week's schedule from January 1, 2005 to May 17, 2009 and couning day-by-day plays of SpongeBob.

Here's what I found:

(Please note that these numbers are counted in 30 minute airs, so if an 11 minute episode aired, it counts as 0.5, or the SBSP Movie counts as 3.5-4 airs, etc. Basically, 1 = 30 minute airing.)


In 2005, SpongeBob aired for 1466.5 half-hours, or 733.25 hours.

In 2006, SpongeBob aired for 2047 half-hours, or 1023.5 hours.

In 2007, SpongeBob aired for 2547 half-hours, or 1273.5 hours.

In 2008, SpongeBob aired for 3018.5 half-hours, or 1509.25 hours.

So far in 2009, SpongeBob has aired for 1246 half-hours or 623 hours.


So, yes... a whole lot of SpongeBob!

There's 8760 hours in a year, but of course Nick only broadcasts 10 hours every day, so lets say 3650 hours a year.

1509.25 hours of Spongebob in 2008.

That means 41.34% of Nick's broadcasts in 2008 were Spongebob.

So far we have 623 hours of Spongebob in Mid may. 138/365 days. So far, Spongebob in 2009 has aired 45.14% throughout 2009.

2005: 20.08% (68 Episodes Reran 21.5 Times)
2006: 28.04% (7.96% Increase) (75 Episodes Reran 27.3 Times)
2007: 34.89% (6.85% Increase) (99 Episodes Reran 25.7 Times)
2008 (Leap Year): 41.23% (6.34% Increase) (114 Episodes Reran 26.4 Times)
2009: 45.47% (4.24% Increase as of May 17th)

It seems that 2009's increase will be the biggest increase yet. We're not even halfway through the year, and the increase is already half last years. If Nick keeps airing Spongebob like they do now, the increase may well reach 8%, even 9%, and the total percentage at the end of 2009 will be either 49% or 50% percent of Nick's airtime.

And how much do these schedulers get paid?

Well in the summer, Nick has a 11-12 hour day in the summer, and 15 hours on weekends. And typically the newer episodes (seasons 4-7) get repeated more frequently than the older episodes.

It's a good thing I don't sit in front of my tv spending all day watching a network, otherwise I may have actually tired of the show by now.

Man, these airings must be unrivaled by any other show or network.

Just goes to show you, Nick loves airing the hell out of that sponge. It really is overplayed, but when it's still getting huge ratings, they sure aren't going to stop now. And I thought back in 2005 there was a lot of SpongeBob airings, but this is ridiculous.
