Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures....

Well, I've said most of them before, but there's a few I haven't revealed...

- SOME Deitch Tom and Jerrys... they're really not all that bad if you watch them on their own, without comparing them to the classic H-B ones. Knowing how the Europeans treat animation as an experimental art form, I find them kind of surreal, like having a bad dream about T&J. :anime:

- The Smurfs... Like Javeman, I think these are really kind of funny (of course I've mentioned several times about how the production roster is chock full of famous names). They're kind of entertaining in a naive but comical way. If anyone has ever read the original Peyo comic strips, they'd have a much different opinion of the Smurfs- they were way more violent and brash than the TV series.

- Fleischer Talkartoons - I love these. The weirder, the better. They're so poorly animated and largely plotless, the worst ones are the best ones. I especially like the ones that make almost no sense, like "Mysterious Mose" and "Swing You Sinners".

- The 'Groovie Goolies' and 'Mission:Magic'... two of stupidest Filmation productions ever... but as many of you referred, I grew up watching them. They hold a place in my entertainment memory.

- The New Adventures Of Mighty Mouse - The classics are good, but these stand alone in a class of their own. John K was reaching for new heights in animation while working for Mr. Bakshi.

- Tiny Toon Adventures - I know a lot of people think these are big ripoffs of the original Looney Tunes creations, but I consider them something different. They're very funny, and they took the WB-concept and stretched it further. A lot of them are really fast-paced, loaded with great jokes, and have great animation from Tokyo Movie Shinsa.

Also Ranma 1/2, (since I have used this avatar over and over, that shouldn't be hard to guess) although I don't feel guilty about that, but I can guess that it wouldn't be popular on a "classic cartoons" board.
Yeah, I love Ranma 1/2 too. Although I consider the manga a true work of art, even though the animated series is visually limited, it's still fun to watch. While I'm at it, I guess I might as well throw in that I also like Sailor Moon too. I consider it superficial, throwaway, girlie fluff.. that's what makes it so great :) ... plus there's really cool monsters in it too.

Nothing guilty about those pleasures. They were funnier and more imaginative than the originals.:D

- The New Adventures Of Mighty Mouse - The classics are good, but these stand alone in a class of their own. John K was reaching for new heights in animation while working for Mr. Bakshi.

I like "Tokio Jokio"
Same here, but that's because I see it as a historical piece rather than something funny (although I did laugh at two parts: the Japanese club sandwich and the submarine that had an arcade inside).

Hey, didn't you say that before on a similar thread?

Now for guilty pleasure classic toons...:

The early Merry Melodies cartoons (the musical cartoons)
The Buddy cartoons (especially Buddy's Beer Garden. How that ending got past the Hayes Office is beyond me)
Some Disney cartoon shorts

...and I guess that's it. The rest I will freely admit that I like, even if no one else agrees (this includes the Cartoon Network-made shows, the comedies on Adult Swim, and the anime on and off CN).

I like watching:

Most of Gene Deitch's Tom & Jerry cartoons
Most of Rudy Larriva's Roadrunner cartoons
Most of the post-64 Speedy & Daffy cartoons
Hendrick's non-Speedy & Daffy cartoons (Cool Cat, Bunny & Claude etc.)
Most of the 1960's-1970's Walter Lantz cartunes
Van Beuren's Aesop's Fables cartoons
Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry cartoons

I have a hard time labeling anything I like as a "guilty pleasure." I find something commendable in all the things I like, otherwise I wouldn't like them. I don't really have any cartoons that, for me, fit into the "so bad they're good" or "fun to watch in order to make fun of" categories. If I think a cartoon is truly bad, I just avoid it. Life's too short, you know?

However I do like cartoons that are sneered at by others. Here's a partial list:

The Famous Studios Popeyes - When I was young I appreciated their adventurous and more serious (at least to a child) tone ,and as I aged I appreciated their emphases on, and observations about, sex, romance, attraction, courtship, etc.

Some of the KFS Popeyes - The best of them are either Segarish or Sagendorfish in terms of plot and characters, or remind me of the FS Popeyes. The worst of them it is best to erase from one's memory.

The Herculoids - Good, old-fashioned, violent superhero action.

Dastardly And Mutley In Their Flying Machines - I love Mutley and many of the plots were very "Road Runner-like" in spirit.

I also enjoy the extremely limited-to-the-point-of-almost-being-non-existent

animation of the old Marvel superhero cartoons of the '60s, because those films had great voices, and theme songs, and helped introduce me to the Marvel Universe.
