"Green Lantern" Pre-Release Discussion (Spoilers)

Oh, something has been bugging the hell out of me, and I finally realized what it was! This movie is Howard the Duck! At least, it has a similar villain. In Howard the Duck Jeffrey Jones falls under the influence of an ugly space monster dark overlord named "Dark Overlord" and starts going through physical changes and it's up to Howard to stop them. In Green Lantern Peter Sarsgaard falls under the influence of an ugly space monster dark overlord named "Parallax" and starts going through physical changes, and it's up to Green Lantern to stop them.

Oh snap! LOL Yeah, that just can't be a coincidence.

Looks like he does. Man, you should’ve worked for the CIA or something.

Or AFLAC.

I honestly don't get why you guys think the CGI looks so horrible. I've watched the trailer and it doesn't look that bad, domino masks aside. It's certainly not at the level of this month's Thor, but not terrible either.

That said.... man, just from a few lines of dialogue, I'm already getting the feeling Hector Hammond is going to be majorly annoying. His voice just sounds so... lame. And since his transformation is apparently a a major plot point, this doesn't bode well for the movie as a whole.

Viral marketing websites a month before release? A little late Warner Bros.

Agreed. The marketing overall has been horrible for this film.

I'm actually concerned over the complete lack of viral marketing for Batman: Arkham City as well.

I was just thinking about something.

It's interesting that in this movie that they not only changed Abin Sur's color from red to purple, but that they emphasize it so much in every TV spot and trailer. I was looking back at all the different Green Lantern stories in comics and animation (SuperFriends, Superman: TAS, JL: New Frontier, GL: First Flight, GL: Emerald Knights) where Abin Sur appears and he's always been red.

I'm sure the producers of the movie want to distinguish him from Sinestro, but I still find it weird that there's a major line in the movie and its advertising about him being "a dying purple alien."

The marketing really has sucked for GL. I mean here is a big space opera that is coming in the wake of Avatar, it should be money in the bank. I don't know what Warner Bros is thinking. As for Arkham City, I think it'll do okay for itself, there are so many fans for it.;)

Video gamers are a different breed, they'll spread the word.

The marketing for GL has been very unfocused, as if they don't know what the movie will be about and after waiting too long just threw something out there.

So does anyone have hope for the green lantern film as far as the script is concerned? I mean I didn't like some of the humour I saw in the trailers, but other than that it seems decent for a superhero film. I'm just wondering how it will far with "Thor" for example.

Been wondering that myself. I suspect GL might actually be more successful as a popcorn flick, which I wouldn't mind. DC needs this to work so they can greenlight (pun intended) sequels and other DC heroes.

I still think there's enough marketing for the movie, it's just not large enough at the moment, but there are toys on the shelves at least.

At least, certainly more marketing than Cap and First Class as of now.

Well, the thing is, they are finished. They're just really bad. I know that recently they approved a little more money to go back and polish the terrible VFX, but you don't usually see movie trailers with unfinished effects. The movie is going to look pretty much like this.
That's not true at all. Studios release trailers with unfinished effects all the time - and it's something that's becoming more and more the norm as the VFX crunch gets worse and worse with each passing year. I think the most recent, and obvious example of this happening was with the first couple of Avatar trailers. There are TONS of shots in those things that look very different from their earlier versions, both in subsequent trailers/commercials and in the final feature film.

There are SO many big-budgeted studio films with massive VFX shots coming out in the summer now that there's a serious crunch for the companies who create them (see this article). Pirates of the Caribbean 3 was the precursor - the studio was immensely worried they weren't going to meet their release date with that film, and from everything I've read work continued right on up to the week before it came out. That sort of thing is the norm now.

I'm not saying the animation in GL will be better by the time the film is released - but it's wrong to flat out say "if it's in the trailer it's done". The studio needs footage to market the film, they're going to take whatever they can get. Finished and unfinished alike...that's just the nature of the business now.

Whoops. Still, I'll take being spoiled over something like Conan's trailer. Stupid thing kept fading to black every 3 seconds, I couldn't tell what was going on in the theater.

I think the biggest fail is the Yahoo Movies tag on the picture. Of all the screenshots to feature on their site.

That was.....not very surprising at all. Really, I did kinda saw it coming, but it is still very sloppy for marketing to let something like that slide.

Man, This looks really great now!

I still think X-Men First Class will be my favorite of the year, but between this and that, and Thor and Cap, this is going to be one heck of a summer for comic book movies!

To celebrate the fact that I got three weeks off from work for rest, I watched today the latest installment in the separate Minions series of movies. What I loved was the unique logo variation of the Universal logo, which was akin to the plot taking place in the late 1800s
