"If you ever wonder where your dreams come from, look around: this is where they're made." - Hugo, 2011

"For over 100 years we've been watching movies. From the very first movie around the turn of the 20th century, the medium has been born and evolved at rapid pace. Action movies, romance movies, sci-fi movies, comedy movies, animated movies, horror movies, crime movies, foreign movies, silent movies, arthouse, drama, western, fantasy, even superhero - thousands of each have been released over the years, many times crossing over. Each year, several hundred movies are released, and a handful are selected by the public to stand the test of time." - Spideyfan914

it's time for the

GREATEST FILM EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 1240 contestants nominated thus far have been split into 8 groups. the first 7 groups contain 160 films each, randomized and placed into four-way matches. Each group will have 4 rounds. Found some doubles.

Aladdin - i think groups 2 and 3

Gremlins - 5 and i think 3 or 4?

It's a Wonderful Life - 3 and 6

The Maltese Falcon - both in Group 7, Match 5. Funny. That one I'll replace with The Tree of Life, 'cause I don't think anyone will vote for it. Makes things easier. ;)

So I get three more replacements. Will get back to you on that.

For the matches:
1. Network (Best script of all time. It's a movie made entirely out of monologues - and very well-written monologues! Superpan, this is a movie that makes you think. ;) (It's also a dark comedy, satire, drama, and much much more. You cannot do justice by describing it - you simply must see it.))
2. Paranormal Activity (I saw it, at least.)
3. Color of Money (Haven't seen, will get around to it eventually. I trust the team involved though.)
4. Stalker (Sounds interesting.)

1. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Stanley Kubrick died and Steven Spielberg took over. Haven't seen it yet, but really want to - it's supposed to be great!)
2. Videodrome (This might just be the most bleeped-up movie I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of bleeped-up movies, including Mulholland Dr. AND Persona AND Being John Malkovich!!)
3. Racing Stripes (Don't know.)
4. Mouse Hunt (Don't know.)

I love the quote you picked; perfect for this thread. Incidentally, I just saw Hugo today, so it was pretty timely as well. :p I was amused to see Hugo wasn't nominated considering it's the only Scorcese movie I've seen... *nudges Spidey to nominate it.*

Anyway...

1. Racing Stripes - I've seen it!
2. A.I. Artificial Intelligence - Been meaning to see this one since it came out.
3. Mouse Hunt - I believe I've heard of it.
4. Videodrome - Don't know.

Hugo came out after the nominations were closed. otherwise i would have nominated it. my second favorite film of the year behind Drive. Did think the quote was perfect though, glad i'm not the only one ;)

If I was to rank Hugo in my previously posted Top Ten of the year, it would be at four, personally. Definitely the best film I saw that will be nominated for major Oscars this year. (I'd like to take this time to plug my blog series I did over the last week, which I was shocked that no one here commented on. I expected at least one from Spidey, Superpan, or cradle. Especially Spidey, since he didn't come to defend Green Lantern. :p)

just responded with my rankings of the 12 films i've seen thus far

I'll just go with this as the only movie that I want to move on from these matches is Network. Saw the ending and loved it. Would like to see the rest of it someday. The rest of them I actually haven't seen any part of and thus I given a temporary reprieve from writing the mini-essays that I will probably be writing for most of my choices.

Oh, yeah, sorry Blankments. Not alot of time to spend on the forum. Heck, my own blog is suffering from negligence which I will attempt to start to attempt to end tomorrow.

Also Spideyfan...nominate Top Hat!

Hey, I just realized what the precedent for Group 8 is!

Color of Money and Videodrome

Skip match 1.

Citizen Kane- Must move on, even if I'm not a fan.
Sideways- Great great film.
Paths of Glory- One of Kubrick's weakest early efforts.
Dragonball Z Movie 4 Lord Slug- O.o

Alright, since I won't be here from Thursday to Saturday, here's my ranking for the next couple of matches. Needless to say I will accept any deals to change the below over the next 24 hours.

1. The Man Who Laughs- This movie inspired the Joker!
2. Blue Valentine- Looks good.
3. Tommy Boy- My sister loved it and watched a few nights ago. I was not compelled to join.
4. The Pink Panther- Can't even remember the plot and I saw it in its first run.

1. Citizen Kane- MY THIRD FAVORITE FILM OF ALL TIME AND ARGUABLY THE GREATEST FILM OF ALL TIME!
2. Sideways- Looks good.
3. Paths of Glory- If the material wasn't so difficult for my Superpan brain to want to compulsively seek out, I would say this movie sounds really great. Ebert says it has a rare moment of beauty at the end, I believe with the song.
4. Dragonball Z 4: Lord Slug- Hi, I'm Superpan. Have I talked about my dislike of most prominent anime lately?

1. On the Waterfront- A bit of a slow burner, but it turns into a real great film. There's a really great scene where Brando tells Eva Marie Saint something and its just wonderfully done. Brando is so natural in this, you don't know he's acting, and this is the one with the famous "I could've been a contender" speech. Plus its just a great redemption/heroic story.
2. The Shaggy D.A.- Old Disney.
3. Rififi- Classic movie.
4. Planet 51- New animation that has nothing to do with Disney.

1. Forgetting Sarah Marshall- I will probably enjoy this one more...
2. The Battle of Algiers- ..then I will this one when I get around to seeing them both.
3. Munich- Heard this is good.
4. The Lost World: Jurassic Park- Really no interest in this franchise.

1. Broken Blossoms- Classic silent film that I have not seen!
2. To Catch a Thief- I will admit I have yet to see a bad Hitchcock film...but Shadow of A Doubt is the only one that approaches his reputed greatness.
3. The Talented Mr. Ripley- Doesn't look bad.
4. Dragonball Z 5: Cooler's Revenge- Refer to movie 4.

1. Howl's Moving Castle- Only one of this guy's films I may be interested in seeing.
2. The Trouble With Harry- A Hitchcock black comedy...sounds mildly amusing.
3. Ultimate Avengers 2- Played like a vestigal epilogue to the first one. Ending was a shock though.
4. Land of the Lost- Heard this one was bad.

1. The Great Mouse Detective- Best Sherlock Holmes film I've seen! The hero is great and Ratigan is Vincet Price at his best! This movie is seeming to develop a cult following that it rightfully deserves!
2. Our Hospitality- A pleasant way to spend a hour and a half. This is the Keaton film that's gotten the most laughs out of me and it even has its moments of darkness, namely at the beginning, while still retaining Keaton's inventive and machine creations and gags.
3. Airplane II- Tried to watch it, said I would watch it later on the tivo, never got around to it.
4. Rocky- Thought of placing it in third for iconic value, but I kind've want the first two movies to move on. Plus its the only one here I haven't seen at all.

1. Prince of Egypt- Probably should have made my top 100, if it weren't for the fact it's so short. Stephen Schwartzs best songs are in this movie and it has my personal favorite depiction of God. Plus Ralph Fiennes is a great Pharaoh...well, not in a political way, but you get my drift.
2. The Incredibles- Good.
3. Tokyo Story- Don't watch this late at night. It's kind've creepy to look at late at night.
4. Shark Tale- I kind've remember this one. Very "eh", bordering on "malevolent eh".

Skipping the next one because I'm only really familiar with Big Fat Liar and I'm not big on voting for Shawshank or Rosemary.

1. The Picture of Dorian Gray- This is SUCH a good movie! The painting is well done, the pacing is dark and devasatating, and the acting and writing is very crisp. An underappreciated gem.
2. The Santa Clause 2- Okay verging on good.
3. Unstoppable- The SNL skit was funny.
4. Cheaper by the Dozen 2- Yet another franchise I am not a fan of.

Videodrome on the T.B.

1. Blue Valentine (Great movie!)
2. The Man Who Laughs (Sounds familiar.)
3. Pink Panther (I believe it was supposed to be good.)
4. Tommy Boy (Don't know.)

1. Citizen Kane (Duh.)
2. Sideways (Looks really good.)
3. Paths of Glory (Also supposed to be great, but I have more interest in Sideways. Don't really care which moves on though.)
4. DBZ (No.)

I haven't really been checking the blogs lately. I'll get to it soon, but I've got a busy week ahead, and then another week away.

1. The Pink Panther - I've seen it.
2. Blue Valentine - For Spidey.
3. The Man Who Laughs - Sounds familar.
4. Tommy Boy - I've heard of but I have no desire for watching.

On the Waterfront
The Shaggy D.A.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Munich
The Battle of Algiers

My Votes:
1. Shaggy D.A.: not as great as the original Shaggy Dog, but still awesome
2. Rififi: looks very intersting
3. On the Waterfront: looks somewhat interesting
4. Planet 51: dunno

1. Jurassic Park: weak match, but i want to see it
2. Munich: want to see it too
3. Algiers: dunno
4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall: i'm essentially voting to get rid of this Apatow film. i hate his movies.

Match 5
Planet 51
The Shaggy D.A.
Rififi
On The Water Front

Match 6
Jurassic Park 2
Forgetting Sarah Marshal
Munich
The Battle of Algiers

On the Waterfront- The only one I know, and should move on.
The Shaggy D.A.
Planet 51
Rififi

Munich- An under-the-radar Speilberg film. Still great.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park- Goldbloom took center stage in this and was excellent.
The Battle of Algiers
Forgetting Sarah Marshall

1. Rififi (The bank heist scene is one of the most intense in cinema!)
2. On the Waterfront (Classic and all that.)
3. Planet 51 (.)
4. Shaggy D.A. (Threat.)

Pass on the second. I've only seen JP2, and don't care to vote for or against it. Though I do want to see both Munich and Sarah Marshall. I suspect I'll like Apatow once I ever see his movies....
