FUNimation's Fall 2012 Survey~!

For the love of GOD!

The one good thing about Funimation is they they always released their anime with high quality dubs. I hope this wont mean they will stop making dubs.

Or maybe its for Sailor Moon, in case Naoko Takeuchi told them they couldnt dub it.

Yes. Please take the survey and ask all your friends to take the survey. I need as many people as possible to take this survey. The bigger the sample size the better.

If there are other boards you frequent, please start a thread there as well.

Sorry I haven't been active. I still visit and read just don't have as much time to participate.

Thanks!

Bit of a leap in logic there. It'd simply means they are looking to see any title that can be marketed toward fans, but not non-fans can make them money.

Awesome! Thanks for popping in, Lance.

I don't suppose anything [you can speak publically of] ever came of that Dragon Box survey/poll?

Lots of good topics in this survey: streaming, sub-only releases, delayed Blu-ray releases because of Japan's reverse importation fears.

It's a good opportunity to get your voice heard.

I had forgotten about the subject of delayed Blu-rays. I wonder if there will be a consensus that fans prefer to wait until the BD is ready or not...

I'm doing great! apparently, at #24

I used to be a medium-big anime fan, but has dropped over the years, but I still somehow enjoy FUNimation's surveys. I actually like how detailed this one is compared to any of the previous I've done.

Your info is safe. We hate spam too. Don't worry. (haha)
"No, I don't want to get awesome correspondence from the amazing people at FUNimation." (haha again)

My liking for anime has still dropped in recent years (mostly I think cause of a lack of TV appearances), but that doesn't mean I'm NOT interesting in a chance to win a DVD ;)

I took it last night. Perfectly OK with openly saying my "top 5 anime you've purchased in the last three years" picks were Gundam titles (Unicorn and 00, of course), FMA Brotherhood, Summer Wars and Redline. Really did adore Spice & Wolf and RideBack for FUNimation titles, among others too. Those picks took awhile, with my collection the competition is.....not easy to choose between.

I'll write down some thoughts from the time that stand out in my mind right now, let's see....The Elite Video subscription answers for me were that I was not a subscriber, but not because I'm indifferent to watching anime in HD. The thing is I think of my quality on the computer screen as "good enough" without subscribing, so for the service to be attractive I need to have it available for my TV...which in my case, means I need compatibility with my Playstation 3. I do have an iPad but I wouldn't stream video outside my apartment (it'd gobble up my data plan!), and when I'm inside where the wifi is I should be watching on the bigger computer monitor or TV. I don't find myself in many situations where I have a constant wifi connection outside my home and am there for a long period of time.

I still buy so much anime I pick the max option every survey. Streaming is a nice extra for me that I use to figure out what I want to own and be able to share, and extras go a long way for me if they involve artwork or information and/or deeper analysis of a show. I'll reiterate that the upcoming Lain release looks amazing and that I'll be sure to pick it up the first week or within a month, budget permitting.

What Jacob basically said. You're jumping to quite an unrealistic conclusion. FUNimation won't stop making dubs if it makes them money (which it does), they're just seeing if there's enough interest for them. There are plenty of recent anime DVD releases without a dub that have done well, it's just that the companies releasing them don't think the sales certain titles would get would warrant the extra cost of a dub.

I have to say though, FUNimation could potentially make some great sub-only releases. Seriously, we need some more Massaki Yuasa stuff on DVD.

And really, you really think they'd release "Sailor Moon" without a dub? I'm sure FUNimation would rather take forever to get approval from Naoko Takeuchi than release such a cash cow without a dub.

I felt that this was another one of those surveys that tries to get people answer it in a certain way. However, I did manage to finish it, unlike other Funimation surveys. When it asked my about the Elite Video Subscription, I was unable to tell them my real issue with it: that it exists in the first place (no offense to those who do subscribe, I'm just saying). At one point, it asked me if I was interested in learning Japanese. When I said yes, it asked if I would be interested in taking lessons from a Japanese person living in Japan through live video chat for a fee. For the purposes of the survey, I said yes, but something tells me it might be too expensive for me...

Oh yeah, one question was about the "You Should Be Watching" tagline. I only told them to keep it because I didn't want to make it sound like I wanted a tagline that was more "hardcore" or something like that.

As for the question about sub-only DVDs. As long as a show has a sub*, it doesn't really matter that much, but there are exceptions (albeit not many). When The Mysterious Cities of Gold came out, I decided to get that one even though it was (English) dub only, since that's a rare show that hasn't been seen in a long time, and waiting for even the French version might be asking too much. I thought that Nozomi's upcoming Princess Knight DVD wasn't going to have the sub available, but then I learned it had been available in Japan on DVD for some time, so I don't know about that one.

In all, I disagree with how some parts of the survey seemed to expect a certain answer, but I manged to answer enough of it to complete it.

*Actually, let me rephrase that. As long as it has a sub that actually translates the show and is not a "gag sub". I won't even bother if I somehow found out that was going to have parody "subtitles" of some kind. Oh yeah, I don't want "dub-titled" releases either.

I guess you are right. Sorry for overreacting. ._.

Mr Heiskell! I filled the survey! And please know that there are hundreds of Fans that are looking forward for more DBZKai on Nicktoons and Vortexx!

BTW Have you guys at Funimation tried to make deals with Nicktoons and/or Vortexx for more of your non DBZ properties? I would love to see your version of One Piece on Vortexx!

Thanks. You have to be very careful crafting a survey question that doesn't lead and spoil your results. You have to get the wording just write to remove any bias.

I try to write conversational as well. This is me. I am at work. Work is like me. So I write like me at work. :)

Your Friendly Neighborhood FUNimation Guy - you can also tell I'm a comic book nerd.

Yup.

Thanks True Believers.

I completed the survey just for fun. Personally, I watch more subbed series online through Hulu and Crunchyroll more than watching subbed series on DVD. I'm more of a dub person, but I have spent more time watching series subbed online in the last couple of years or so. I don't know if I'd buy a sub-only DVD, but it would have to depend on the series as well. Though, I do have to wonder about their reaction to a girl between the ages of 18-24 who still buys Pokemon DVDs.

I updated my previous post to elaborate on what kind of subtitles they should be. After all, I wouldn't want a DVD of a show with "gag subs" or any other kind of "troll subs". I also don't want "dub-titled" DVDs either.

I can't imagine FUNimation is actually going to start doing sub-only releases.

I can. I don't think enough people are going to say they have bought subtitled-only DVD for FUNimation to start making them. But honestly, sub-only anime DVDs are actually a viable option these days. FUNimation could potentially bring over some really daring, unexpected anime releases over that may be too risky to dub, but are still very good and have an audience. I've mentioned Masaaki Yuasa stuff before, I'd also like to see the Japanese version of "Shin-Chan". And who knows, if a sub-only anime sells well enough FUNimation could consider dubbing it later.

I previously said that it didn't matter if a Funimation release was sub-only or not as long as it had a sub. To add to that, if a sub-only release was really the only way Funimation could release a show, then they should just do that, instead of not licensing (let along releasing) a show simply because they couldn't also do a dub. With this in mind, if Funimation were to license Dr. Slump (by which I mean, the 1981-1986 version), and a sub-only release was the only way to go, then they should just release it that way (sub-only). I would definitely buy it...

Yeah that touches on a good point. FUNimation does tend to release recent stuff and classics that became available over the years. Which is good, I like those. But if subtitle-only releases from them were to mean some older stuff coming into their catalog, I'd definitely be all for that.

I have another theory as for why Johnny Bravo is neglected by CN nowadays. Putting aside the basic concept, it's the retools that made the show chaotic.
I might be the only one who cares but why is Scooby Doo basically unavailable everywhere? Netflix has only Mystery Inc and the two James Gunn movies. Tubi has What's New and Where Are You. Meanwhile HBO Max has basically nothing. I've been itching to watch the classic Scooby Doo direct to video movies lately and they're nowhere to be found outside of purchasing them on sites like YouTube.
Last night started watching a new adult animated series, a Netflix original that is basically the succesor to Big Mouth.

What is so great? Despite being a 18+ show, they actually bothered to give it a Romanian dub :ack::eek:
