Everything's Archie: General Archie Thread

Well, Gene Simmons is one of the most corporate musicians in existence; he would (and does) license Kiss on anything. I was surprised by the "X-Factor" (Cowell series) licensing, but it's not hard to get this one.

So, since nobody has really objected to Kevin Keller's upcoming gay marriage in the What If? series set in the future, Life With Archie, Fox News has decided to make it an issue and find someone to be outraged.

“It's unfortunate that a comic book series usually seen as depicting innocent, all-American life is now being used to advance the sexual revolution,” said Peter Spriggs, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying organization promoting Christian views.

“I think whatever boost in sales might come from the novelty or curiosity factors will be more than offset by the number of both kids and parents who will be turned off by this storyline and its obvious social and political agenda,” he said.

A social and political agenda which I believe to contain better writing and actual character development than most of the previous 'innocent all-American life' series, Spriggs.

We're just one of (slightly) many welcoming Archie Comics' slow foray into modern life. Tough beans to you.

Dark Horse is attempting an Archie Archive....and with 70 years' worth of pages to go, from multiple titles, I don't see how they could pull it off. The question isn't if they'll give up before they reach the end, but when.

Maybe a set of DVD-ROMs would have been a better idea.

These volumes are great, though. The only complaint is that they could provide a little more historical context and information about the writers and artists. If the Best of Archie volume was the el-cheapo one, these are the deluxe.

They did do some bronze age DVD roms. I don't think they were that popular, I saw a bunch marked down the last time I went to Half-Price books.

I bought all three of the 70s DVDs from Amazon.com for $10 total or so...

I bought those DVDs since the last time this was updated. They're really cool. It's too bad they started with the Bronze Age, though, one of the DVDs advertises a Silver Age set that never happened.

Check out what I found. This is a really weird early Betty and Veronica story from 1947 that was drawn way off model from the house style, even the house style of that time, in a total cheesecake/pinup style. An early "new look" attempt or just an artist who went his own way?

The newest addition to Life With Archie's downbeat drama will be blood n' bullets.

Life With Archie is Archie undergoing a process that I like to call "Funky Winkerbeanerization." First, someone has marital problems. Then someone gets cancer. Then someone dies. And eventually it gets so depressing that every installment should come with a Cure CD to lighten the mood a bit.

Holy crap, that's hilarious.

Stop it. Your failure in all aspects of life and your ultimately futile struggle against an uncaring universe is just killing me with laughter.

Ummmm.

Things are just gonna get worse and worse, until the time skip, when we see Archie as a 60-year-old potbellied balding grump who purchases Pop Tate's and just sits in it all day.

On a related note, I find it really strange that the most dead-serious, depressing newspaper strip printed today is named something like "Funky Winkerbean."

So... this chap's been in Riverdale for about two years, and only just now is getting teased?

I swear, Archie nearly beats DC for 'minor stories for media-pandering' at times.

I don't understand your criticism. They have a gay character. They tell stories for kids. What's wrong with a story about anti-gay bullying? It's a serious real-world problem.

Also, he hasn't been there two years without getting teased. Time is highly compressed in the Archie universe. Archie and his friends have been in the same grade for more than 70 years

Actually, he's been pretty heavily promoted for the past two years... this tease is fairly low-key in comparison. ;-)

Still, looking forward to buying it...

Think about it....there have been so many zombie-themed things lately that we're getting an Archie take. It's come to that....

Hi, old thread. Sorry no one posts here anymore, but I thought you'd like it if I updated you with the news that the ongoing saga of Nancy Silberkleit has gone absolutely ... freaking ... banaynay.

Archie Comics Employees File $32.5M Lawsuit Against Co-CEO Nancy Silberkleit - Comic Book Resources

The employee lawsuit, in which Archie veteran Gorelick is joined by Mike Pellereto, Debbie Monserrate, Jim Paget, Jonathan Gray and David Feliciano, rehashes many claims from earlier filings and hearings, ranging from the often-repeated allegation that Silberkleit interrupted a meeting and pointed to each of the four men in the room, shouting "PENIS, PENIS, PENIS, PENIS!" to a pattern of harassment and intimidation. One of the plaintiffs, Paget, asserts that while he was hired early this year as Silberkleit's assistant -- well after her dispute with Goldwater was supposedly resolved -- he was asked to serve as her spy and dig up "dirt" on other employees. Paget, who claims he begged Silberkleit not to ask him lie, was eventually dismissed from his position; he's now an archivist for Archie.

In the complaint, which is peppered liberally with words like "deranged" and "dangerous," the employees assert that in a "destructive, deceitful and deliberate manner," Silberkleit "seeks [...] her self-promotion as the effective 'Dictator' over Archie Comics or in default of that, the demise of this iconic publication in American culture."

Charging that Silberkleit's association with the company will result in its "complete collapse," the employees call the lawsuit "a last resort and effort to save Archie Comics from the downfall that will result from defendant’s continued involvement."

It's like reading about a knife fight at Disneyland.

http://nypost.com/2013/10/03/archie-comics-employees-file-lawsuit-against-bully-boss/

The employees say the brutal boss even accused a cancer-riddled child visiting with the Ronald McDonald Foundation of stealing comic character Betty Cooper’s wig, when in fact the staff had gifted it the young girl whose hair was falling out.

Ironically Silberkleit runs an anti-bullying foundation called “Rise Above Social Issues” while she allegedly stalks employees and their families, tried to get a Hell’s Angel to come to headquarters to intimate her underlings and hired a spy to dig up dirt on them.
