I dunno, I don't think Frontier has any more gimmicky-looking Digimon than other seasons. Like Omegamon from Adventure, for example.
But I do agree that this season's Digimon look really gimmicky. All of the Digimon look more like cheesy toys than interesting characters, IMHO.
Whilst I will agree that Omegamon was somewhat gimmicky as a character, I have to say, he didn't really feel like he'd been designed to be a toy, in the same sense as Takuya, Kouji and Kouichi's A-Hybrids and Ancient forms. I mean, War Greymon and Metal Garurumon do combine to form his arms, but otherwise? Not as much so as the later seasons.
Personally, I think there was more of a gimmicky feel with Zero Two, specifically V-mon's forms, who when compared with the Armored forms of Hawkmon and Armadimon, have significantly more resemblance to V-mon. Paildramon in particular felt like he'd been designed to be made into a toy.
And with Tamers, it didn't really feel like it'd had toys written into it. Not many Japanese transformers were actually produced, either - only Growmon/Megalo Growmon, Galgomon/Rapidmon, Guilmon/Dukemon and Impmon/Beelzebumon. In other words, the characters weren't designed to lend themselves to toys.
With Frontier, on the other hand, it was basically Adventure with a Sentai approach. And it's not just the basic concept. (read: characters are designed to be toys) I haven't really watched Savers (haven't had the time), but it feels less toy-driven.
At this point, I can know no more than anyone else on this board (unless any of you have connections to Toei or TV Asahi), but I have to say, the "combining" aspect has a rather cheap look to it.
