To kick this thread off, here is a press release from 2002, almost 10 years ago:

Cartoon Network '01-'02 Season Scores Across-the-Board Growth in All Key Demos

Supported by a growing line-up of prime time original series and strong afternoon and late-night franchises, Cartoon Network concluded the 2001-2002 television season charting significant growth in all of its targeted demos. Performance results for each of Cartoon Network's key demos include the following claims:

  • Tweens 9-14 delivery increased by 24% in total day, 14% in prime time.
  • Kids 6-11 delivery grew by 14% in total day, 9% in prime time.
  • Kids 2-11 delivery improved by 8% in total day, 4% in prime time.
  • Adults 18-34 late-night delivery (Sat, 11 p.m.-2 a.m. & Sun. 10 p.m.-1 a.m.) expanded by 33%.
  • Viewers 12-24 delivery rose by 31% in total day, 25% in prime time.
This delivery trajectory, coupled with the network's distribution growth to near-full cable penetration (81.9 million homes), proves the network's programming strategies this yearõ(A) building its signature slate of prime time original series with premieres on Friday nights; (B) expanding its Toonami afternoon action-adventure block to 7 p.m.; (C) introducing an entirely new weekend late-night franchise specifically for adult viewers; and (D) adding original fare to its morning dayparts, etc.õhave worked on all fronts. Highlights from the '01-'02 television season include the following:

  • Justice League: The original series premiere (Sat., 11/17/01, 7-8:30 p.m.) delivered more adults 18-34 than any telecast in Cartoon Network history-755,000 viewers. It also stands as the highest-rated original telecast among adults 18-34 (1.6) and the second-highest-rated telecast overall. Additionally, it scored the network's best-ever household delivery (1,770,000 homes) for a Cartoon Network premiere.

  • Dragon Ball Z: All-new episodes of Cartoon Network's exclusive animÅ import (Mon., 9/16/02, 6:30 p.m.) muscled its way to the #1 program of the week (9/16-23/02) on all cable television with tweens 9-14 (6.1), boys 9-14 (11.5) and men 12-24 (6.6). As anchor to Cartoon Network's Toonami afternoon action-adventure block (4-7 p.m.), Dragon Ball Z also propelled the network's annual on-air/online "Total Immersion Event," Toonami: Trapped in Hyperspace (9/16-20/02, 4-7 p.m.), to #1 among all cable during its time period with boys 9-14 and boys 12-17.

  • Adult Swim Action: Since its Feb. '02 premiere (Saturdays, 11 p.m.-2 a.m.), the block has nearly doubled delivery of men 18-34 (+88%) compared to the same time period last year, while ratings grew by 67%.

  • Adult Swim Comedy: Celebrating its first anniversary (Sunday, 9/02/01, 10 p.m.-1 a.m.), the blocked earned a 0.5 adults 18-34 rating, up 25% vs. last year. Among men 18-34, ratings were up 67% and delivery grew by 85%.

  • Baby Looney Tunes: The original series premiere week (9/16-22/02, M-F, 9 a.m.) produced double-digit ratings and delivery growth-kids 6-11 ratings (1.6) grew by 14% while kids 2-11 ratings (2.0) increased by 11% vs. the same time period last year. Similarly, delivery of kids 6-11 and kids 2-11 improved by 19% and 15%, respectively.

  • Hamtaro: Debuting last summer (Monday, 6/03/02) and running weekday mornings at 7 a.m., the animÅ series increased tweens 9-14 ratings (1.5) by 36% and tween boys 9-14 ratings (2.4) by 71%.

  • He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The original series premiere (Friday, 8/16/02, 4-5:30 p.m.) scored as the highest-rated program in its time period on all television-broadcasting and cable-among boys 6-11 (4.7, up 15%), boys 9-14 (4.2, up 45%), persons 12-24 (1.5, up 150%) and men 18-24 (1.4, up 1,400%). Tweens 9-14 delivery grew by 34% and kids 6-11 delivery grew by 12%.

Ah... back when the 12-24 numbers were counted. I wish they still had more value to CN.

Adult Swim sure has come a long way from those humble numbers.

DBZ got 6.1 with kids 9-14 and 11.5 with boys 9-14? Wowza. Bet CN wished they could still get those kinds of numbers. Too bad even with a solid hit to draw viewers the competition has become much stronger and made those kinds of numbers much more difficult to obtain.

Wow, Cartoon Network was really strong back then. Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were great competition. Now, it seems most of the competition is just between Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. The only competition Cartoon Network seems to have is Disney XD, which has gotten close to Cartoon Network, and even beat Cartoon Network a few times.

Hmm... even that strong premiere for Black and White isn't pulling in those kinds of numbers. At least not until they got lower.

It's actually Bitter-Sweet so to speak, Cartoon Network at the time treated all their acquisitions with care and respect. Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece, Zatch Bell, Totally Spies, 6teen, Robot Boy, Storm Hawks, and George of the Jungle, were all given nice treatment, advertised and promoted and all given fair treatment, as if they were Cartoon Network Originals. The Cartoon Network of today wouldn't dare give, acquisitions just as good treatment as say, Regular Show or Ben 10, Garfield which pulls in nice ratings, is is shafted and not promoted a lot of the time, all because it's a acquisitions, so while I do feel bad for Cartoon Network, this is their mess and they have to clean it up, the Cartoon Network of today is lucky to pull in a 2.0, anything higher is a very good job, back then that would have been considered, alright. But, the fact they gave Beyblade, Garfield, and Pokemon better slots, shows their trying, but they can't expect to get back up to par, overnight it's going to take a bit more commitment. Again, I reiterate, I'm very sad for the lackluster ratings they get, but I can't help but think their treatment of those perfectly good acquisitions was there undoing.

I'm not exactly sure how well Monday's have done this week because of a new Big Time Rush on Nickelodeon. Hopefully they have done well, as Cartoon Network has still pulled great ratings even when that has aired.

It's really a shame that The Garfield Show and Beyblade: Metal Fusion has gotten bad treatment for so long, because they're acquisitions. It's nice that Cartoon Network is improving a little, by treating acquisitions a little better. I hope future acquisitions such as Redaki get good treatment, because it seems all Cartoon Network cares about is money, and not ratings, and that is not good because eventually, the good money maker shows will drop too and Cartoon Network will lose money. Cartoon Network needs to treat all show well, by giving them a chance, promoting them, and airing them at reasonable times. Even if they don't bring in any money, they might bring in good ratings. Look at Totally Spies! for example. That brought in pretty good ratings, but Cartoon Network had no merchandising rights to it, so Cartoon Network made no money off of it, but at least it helped boost Cartoon Network's ratings a little bit.

Cartoon Network should focus on ratings and money both. If Cartoon Network has good ratings, even from shows that they make no money off of, then the network will be more know, which means Cartoon Network will eventually make more money. Zatch Bell!, George of the Jungle, Totally Spies!, Storm Hawks, Total Drama, 6teen, Naruto, Code Lyoko, Dragon Ball Z, and more have all gotten pretty good treatment, and for the most part, have broughten in decen ratings. Metajets, Gormiti, The Amazing Spiez!, and probably some more have brought in bad ratings, and were treated bad before they even premiered. Let's hope Cartoon Network will improve in treatment of all shows, and hopefully the ratings will improve.

Hah. Good to know I wasn't the only guy in middle school watching cute animals doing cute things.

It's kind of like Sailor Moon. Lots of boys watched it but hardly anyone admits they liked it.

I liked Hamtaro when I was in 1st Grade. I definitely enjoyed the show back then. People made fun of me for it, but hey, I liked the show, so it didn't matter.

I enjoyed that show quite a bit, I would watch it before school when I was five-years-old, it's a pity it never finished it's run.

Am I reading this right? DBZ got an 11.5 with the 9-14 demo? That's insane.

Oh man. And here in this day and age, we're ready to celebrate and throw a parade when they actually manage to crack a 2.0 every once in a while. My, how things have changed in nine years.

now cartoon network spamms regular show and mad and ben 10 and such and thats why cn doesn't recieve those ratings anymore due to those shows sucking so baaaadd

i think cn really needs to rembrand its self with more entertaining shows

and get rid of the useless ones like young justice ' and such

and they need to have premiers every night'

and they REALLY NEED TO GIVE 3RD PARTY SHOWS A CHANCE!! NO MORE GIVING REX AND BEN AND ADVENTURE TIME BJ'S cause there home made

even though of shows like Pokemon or batman would kill those shows in the ratings if they were given the same treatment

cn really needs to change how they treat shows i mean Pokemon is pretty far ahead in the ratings on saturday morning and cn still doesnt advertise a show thats a guarantee success

since Pokemon is 1 of those rare shows that is consistent

but cn will soon realise that since every year there ratings keep getting lower and lower until shows like beyblade and pokemon will change knowing there on a sinking ship channel that spamms advertisement for 3 shows and lets the rest suffer

im from australia and i moved over to the us recently but in australia they gave every show on cn great advertisement and they gave Pokemon primetime slots and it was smashing the ratings here so much that Pokemon is on channel 10 one of australia's highest ratings channel you know why'' they advetise it

cn us needs to learn from there au counterpart

I blame the internet. i still think CN should pick up DBZ Kai.

Woah woah, they've only recently started airing Regular Show more than a few times a week and only because it's done great on Monday night. MAD does air a bit too often due to it's random afternoon airings but it's not taking up much space on the line-up. Ben 10 Alien Force is shafted to 6:30AM on weekdays while Pokemon get 8AM. Ben 10: Ultimate Alien and Generator Rex only air Friday night and Saturday morning despite doing very well for an action shows. They're not exactly overplaying any of them, not even Regular Show outside of instances like this past weekend. If you want to talk about overplayed shows I'd point fingers to Codename: Kids Next Door, Johnny Test and Ed, Edd n Eddy.

i think cn really needs to rembrand its self with more entertaining shows
Sure but what's more entertaining is entirely up to each individual viewer

and get rid of the useless ones like young justice ' and such
What? Young Justice is an awesome show and it only airs twice a week so what's the problem?

and they need to have premiers every night'
Sure they could spread out some premieres over more nights, that certainly wouldn't be a bad idea.

and they REALLY NEED TO GIVE 3RD PARTY SHOWS A CHANCE!! NO MORE GIVING REX AND BEN AND ADVENTURE TIME BJ'S cause there home made
They've been pretty decent to 3rd party shows in premieres lately, much better than the previous 2 years in which some shows premiered at 6AM on weekdays with no promotion. Super Hero Squad is about the only 3rd party show they're premiering on the network at the moment that I would say is being treated poorly. Time will tell how they'll premiere more episodes of The Garfield Show and such.

It's only natural to put more resources behind promoting original productions. Acquisitions deserve their due as well but why should a 3rd party show that CN gets far less money from airing and could be taken from CN in the future get the same treatment as an original production which cost more to obtain and has more long term value? Some people happen to like those original comedies and action series and want them to succeed. IMO when CN shafts an acquisition that's a shame but it's an even bigger shame when CN treats an original series poorly (ie, Robotomy, The Secret Saturdays, Flapjack, etc)

even though of shows like Pokemon or batman would kill those shows in the ratings if they were given the same treatment
Not necessarily but I'd sure like for Batman to have a slot period at this point.

cn really needs to change how they treat shows i mean Pokemon is pretty far ahead in the ratings on saturday morning and cn still doesnt advertise a show thats a guarantee success
Pokemon's Saturday ratings really aren't that great compared to the rest of Saturday. It's usually among the top rated of the morning but not always #1 or even #2 or #3. CN gives Pokemon an adequate amount of promotion and airings especially once it gets that 3PM slot on weekday afternoons in March.

since Pokemon is 1 of those rare shows that is consistent
Not really, it's ratings fluctuate.

but cn will soon realise that since every year there ratings keep getting lower and lower until shows like beyblade and pokemon will change knowing there on a sinking ship channel that spamms advertisement for 3 shows and lets the rest suffer
With success of recent original series and some acquisitions, CN is actually on a bit of a rise. The reason why the ratings were so much better before was because the competition was a lot weaker back then and there has been a rise in the success of video games and the internet as a whole which pulls viewers away more than even Nick and Disney's oddly successful shows.

im from australia and i moved over to the us recently but in australia they gave every show on cn great advertisement and they gave Pokemon primetime slots and it was smashing the ratings here so much that Pokemon is on channel 10 one of australia's highest ratings channel you know why'' they advetise it

Cool story bro, CN AU also aired uncut One Piece for a while and you can bet the US One Piece fans were a wee bit jealous of that, until we got the legal streams that is.

I know I shouldn't even be saying this to someone with the name Pokemon but your Pokemon fanboyism schtick is getting tired, fast.

I blame the internet. i still think CN should pick up DBZ Kai.

Yeah the internet is a big part of why CN isn't getting ratings like that anymore.

The DBZ Kai situation is out of their hands now though but... they could always get One Piece instead. :anime:

i am a massive pokemon fanboy :D and ill never change''

because its been a big part of my life and its been on the air so long while fads come and go pokemon will be there 4 ever and its aired nearly twice the amount of episodes that simpsons have'

i just think cn needs to try something different ' because what they are doing now isn't working at all

also any news on the zoroark movie ratings im guessing a 2. something

But the reason CN "spams" those shows is because they don't suck, ratings-wise (going by today's standards). I don't think even Nick and Disney get 11.5's regularly anymore.

and get rid of the useless ones like young justice ' and such
Young Justice useless? I strongly disagree, but I'll respect your opinion. From what little ratings info we've seen, it's getting good ratings, though.

and they REALLY NEED TO GIVE 3RD PARTY SHOWS A CHANCE!! NO MORE GIVING REX AND BEN AND ADVENTURE TIME BJ'S cause there home made
I agree with giving third-party shows better treatment, but let's face it: network originals are always going to get the star treatment. The network spends a lot of time and money producing those shows, so they're going to do everything they can to make sure they succeed. This goes for all networks.

So... basically, you just want them to give Pokémon more ads and move it to primetime because that worked for CN AUS, correct? Okay, but be aware that what works for one country won't always work for another. There's no guarantee the show will automatically do better in primetime here.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see Andrew's post. Gotta learn to type faster around here. :p

gen rex and sym bionic titan worked in there prime time slots??

why couldn't Pokemon do it

but if they ever did move Pokemon to prime time cn would stuff it up like they always do like

.not advertising the new timeslot
.advertising the wrong time [cough black and white]

and spongebob has received quite a few 12's this year

I see your point, yet majority of your shows/examples were from 2005+. By that time, toonami was already shafted to saturdays, and OoJimmy'sHead was premiered *shivers*

Hah. Good to know I wasn't the only guy in middle school watching cute animals doing cute things.

That show was freakin awesome. Those hamsters were so cute dude...
But for me, it was their little sound effects when they'd rub their noses. cush cush cush...hehe.

gen rex and sym bionic titan worked in there prime time slots?? why couldn't Pokemon do it

They perform respectively good, but its not replacing them with Pokemon will somehow spike up the average for that night. That's the problem of being a network with a stated niche they want to fill.

and spongebob has received quite a few 12's this year

SpongeBob is an entirely different beast completely removed from standard children's programming. It's a merchandise juggernaut and a consistent performer for Nickelodeon. It not only attracts its target audience, but it also ranks up there with popular shows for teens and adults.

There is literally nothing else in the industry that can match up to that.

That show was freakin awesome. Those hamsters were so cute dude...
But for me, it was their little sound effects when they'd rub their noses. cush cush cush...hehe.

Those little sounds melted my heart every single time. Although I was particularly fond of the nibbling noise. Shoot, I even went through a phase of trying to open sunflower seeds the exact same way, but my teeth are too big to perfectly open it like them.
