Chapter 4
The far side of the Moon…
Gryphus, Vice and Yakasha stood around of the command desk onboard the Gotengo.
“If no body minds, I’ll take tactical command of this operation,” the General announced. “Our first priority should be rescuing the Empress, then driving the Xiliens out, but either way, either they’re all goin’ to die or we’re all goin’ to die fighting, I’ll make sure of it personally.”
“Okay… then what’s the plan?”
“Simple, really. The Empress is being held in the Hresvelgr. Vice, you’re in command of the Essex, and Yakasha, the Loréné. You two are going to launch a spearhead assault on the Hresvelgr and get the Empress out. Then fall back to this position. I’m going here.” I’m going here.” Gry pointed at the map. “Rome.”
“What the hell is in Rome?”
“The thing that is going to save our ass. Now move out.”

The Essex and Loréné held in tight formation as they slowly approached the Hresvelgr. The Gotengo followed just behind, prepared to set forth on its separate mission when it was time.
“To all personnel,” Gryphus announced on the fleet-wide comm. system. “This war… has already been lost. The Xiliens have overrun our homeland and captured our Empress. Our chance of survival is scarce at best, but this battle is a matter of pride. Pride in our grand empire. It is our duty… no, our honor, to rescue the Empress and liberate our homeland! Do not count days! Do not count miles! Only count the number of Xiliens you have killed! … Initiate Operation Final War.”
“Oorah!” chimed in the bridge crew. The ships pushed to full speed and the Gotengo banked off, heading for Rome. One of the communications officers, their ship unknown, had the anthem on the ESUN broadcast to everyone.
Vice smirked as she hummed along with the slow beginning if the anthem. The only thought running through her mind was revenge. In fact, it was the only though running through all the soldiers’ minds. The hangars on the Essex and Loréné were filled to the brink with soldiers loading onto dropships, but surprisingly, there was no resistance from the Xiliens on the Hresvelgr.
The Essex and Loréné pulled up along side, using the docking rings. Battalions of troops gathered in the docking area of the Hresvelgr. It was quiet, almost too quiet. Vice ordered all compartments be searched. She didn’t want to take the chance of an ambush. While the teams fanned out, she and Yakasha made their way to the throne room.

Gryphus stepped off of the Pelican dropship in the middle of the Vatican. The streets were barren and in ruin. It looked like the city had been deserted decades ago, but that was not why he was here. On the northern end of the square where they had landed was the church, and below that was his objective.
The team moved through the front doors of the ancient building. The great stained glass windows that lined the main room were cracked and broken. Dust was caked on thick on the benches. When the ESUN had invaded Italy, this building had been ransacked completely, but it looked untouched since then. Gryphus walked past where the altar had once been and came to a small door at the back of the stage.
He twisted the rusted handle and passed into the smaller room beyond. It appeared to be a small waiting room for the priest in between church services. The dust was even thicker in here, causing many soldiers of the small team to cough spontaneously. The General kneeled down on the floor, sliding his hand along the wooden floor. A few of the soldiers looked on pecularly, but then the General found the small ring in the floor. He grabbed it, and pulled up the trap door it was connected to, before jumping down into the darkness below.
Gry landed on the dirt floor 7 feet below. A few soldiers landed right behind him and turned on their flashlights. There it was. Focused in the beams of light, a few feet away, was a stone tablet, sitting on a stone pillar. On the tablet, a passage surrounded by gemstones, along with a depiction of a snake with wings could be seen.
Ut septem sanctus gems convenio hic vadum ultimate gemma senior orior oriri ortus quondam iterum. sapphire , amethyst , topaz , emerald , lacrima Heliandum , ruby quod cobalt vadum addo Pluvia Extraho.
Gryphus read the passage several times.
“Gallardo, what does it say?” the General asked one of his soldiers. Gallardo stepped forward and read the tablet. He was of Italian descent and was trained to read Latin at a young age by a priest, so this would be quite easy for him.
“When the seven sacred gems come together here shall the Ultimate Gem Lord rise once again. The sapphire, the amethyst, the topaz, the emerald, the amber, the ruby and the cobalt shall bring the Rainbow Dragon,” the Italian translated. Gryphus tapped in chin in thought as he surveyed the tablet. It mentioned 7 different gems, but only 6 were present. The seventh slot was empty. He looked at the stones, trying to figure out which was missing.
“Dammit, where in hell are we going to get a topa-” Gryphus paused. He reached down into his shirt and pulled out the small necklace that hung around his neck. It was given to him by his mother way back when he was a young boy. It was a gemstone that represented the month he was born. The gemstone: a yellow topaz.
“Thanks, ma,” he very quietly whispered. He gently placed the stone into the slot. All at once, the room began to shake. Brilliant beams of light shot out from the gemstones on the tablets. Each beam was the color of the stone it emanated from. The roof above them peeled away, allowing the beams to pierce the clouds in the sky above.
The entire sky glowed as bright as the sun. The clouds opened, and out descended a serpentine dragon. It was as white as snow, and the seven gems lined its sides. It spread its great, angel-like wings and roared into the sky. The light began to fade and Rainbow Dragon hovered above remains of the church. He looked down and noticed Gryphus standing in front of his tablet.
‘
I much appreciate you for releasing me from my prison,’ Rainbow Dragon telecommunicated. ‘
Let me return the favor.’
“Please, Rainbow Dragon,” Gry spoke up to the great being. “A race of aliens has invaded and destroyed our homeland. They have captured our leader.”
‘
And you have not done the same thing to the other nations of this planet, how?’
“We defeated the others honorably on the field of battle, but these Xiliens that invaded us used an impostor of our Empress to greatly weaken our empire from the inside out, a most dishonorable way to fight.”
‘
Of all human characteristics, I hold nothing higher than honor. If what you say is true, then I shall aid you in your fight. Lead me to these “Xiliens” so that I may do battle with these dishonorable fiends.’

“All units, report. We’ve found the Empress,” Vice spoke into her radio as she leaned over the hierarch.
“C Wing, clear.”
“D Wing, clear.”
“E Wing, we have something here. We are unsure what it is, but it is emitting Inaqueda radiation and there are some symbols that are changing are on a regular interval.”
“What the? Jesus Christ, the reason no Xiliens were here was because it was a bomb! All units, back to the vessels immediately! Yakasha, grab the Empress!” Vice and Yakasha clamored to their feet, helping along the still partially sedated Empress.
The soldiers made it back to the Essex and Loréné at a break neck pace and in a surprisingly ordered manor. The ships disconnected and banked hard away. It was then the device detonated. The Hresvelgr became enveloped in a flash of light and a massive shock wave was released, slamming into the vessels, causing utter chaos within.
When the light faded, the Hresvelgr was no more. Fragments of the station swirled in space where the epitome of the ESUN’s power once was. The Essex and Loréné floated dead in space…
A/N: The Empress and I have decided that
The Liberation of Gracemeria will be the the anthem of the ESUN. Also, I will see what I can do about getting some pictures of Rainbow Dragon, the Xiliens and the Xilien Mothership. I should have them added later tonight or tomorrow.
