Kyle Carroza, the creator of Mighty Magiswords, mentioned that Chris Reccardi is dead . He was 54. Although no news outlets have reported on this yet, I do trust his word given that he's worked with people who worked with Chris (notably, Bob Camp and Richard Pursel, who worked with Chris in Ren And Stimpy, and would work with Kyle on Magiswords). Plus, he wants to pay respect to his family, and I remember how June Foray's death was similarly revealed, first reported by Porky's voice actor Bob Bergen. Chris' many works include Ren And Stimpy, Cow And Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory, SpongeBob Samurai Jack, The Modifyers, The Mighty B, Kick Buttowski, Billy Dilley, and more. He's also worked on a few theatrical movies like Storks, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, Shrek Forever After, and more. He will be missed.

Why on earth is the link in a spoiler tag?

This guy has been responsible for alot of my childhood memories. May he rest in peace.

Oh my God. He was so young.

Bill Wray says that he had a heart attack while surfing. What a terrible way to go.

He was a very powerful, underrated force in cartoons. He will very much be missed.

That’s too bad. He’s had a good range of different animation jobs. It’s unfortunate that his Modifyers pilot never got greenlit.

Oh my God, I have no words... His artstyle is most beautiful thing I've ever saw, R.I.P.

RIP

How sad! He worked on just about everything I love in animation. And he was so young, too.

R.I.P.

You will be missed.

He's one of those few animators that managed to work on a whole variety of animation studios (nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney, Sony, Spumco, etc.)

Although he was a freelance for SpongeBob, A Life in a Day was one of the funniest seasons 6-8 episodes simply because of "Livin like Larry."

Is this day trying to depress me? Between this and the Jim Cummings accusations... just, what the hell.

Give "Hermit Ren" a watch/re-watch for some of Reccardi's finest work, IMO.

Very, very tragic. We've lost someone who was a huge part of R&S history. Chris was responsible for some of the show's most iconic moments (he storyboarded "Space Madness," wrote the Happy Happy Joy Joy song in "Stimpy's Invention," and was one of the musicians for the opening and closing themes) and the episodes he made at Games have some of the most distinctive artwork and direction of the entire series. This is a terrible, terrible loss. My condolences go out to his wife.

It's interesting how drastically opinions can change over time. When I first watched that episode on the Seasons Three and a Half-ish DVD, I thought it was utterly terrible and seemed like a poor imitation of the "psychodrama" episodes from the first two seasons, but I've since come to appreciate it for its surreal atmosphere and unique art style, and it's become one of my favorite episodes of the series. It's possible my initial opinion was influenced by the bad reputation the Games episodes still had at that time.

Chris was also one of the few directors to experiment with using characters other than Ren and Stimpy ("Hard Times for Haggis" is a very underrated episode in my opinion) and his artwork, while noticeably different from the John K/Spumco house style of the first two seasons (very stylized and abstract as opposed to grotesquely detailed), still suited the show in its own way and had a ton of character, which gave his episodes a clear identity and made them stand out from what the other Games directors were doing.

John K offers his condolences:

This may not be entirely genuine, considering some of the details revealed in Sick Little Monkeys - apparently, John was angry at Chris for dating his ex-girlfriend Lynne Naylor and fired him over it (shortly before John was fired himself). Still, I can honestly say I wasn't expecting him to post something like this.

That one and Hard Times for Haggis are just about masterworks. Almost everything about them is pitch perfect.

If the whole Spumco/Games mess worked against Chris Reccardi and other Games artists getting their own shows, then that's a damn shame.

When John K gets off his high horse to tip his hat, you’ve got to have some serious skills.

I didn’t even know this fellow until now but he’s been a part of nearly EVERYTHING I’ve watched, so it’s sad to learn about his story like this.

Thanks for literally crafting my childhood Chris.

It's crazy just how much of my childhood he had a hand in creating. Man, I wish The Modifyers pilot he co-created with his wife had gotten picked up. We truly lost a great talent.

To celebrate the fact that I got three weeks off from work for rest, I watched today the latest installment in the separate Minions series of movies. What I loved was the unique logo variation of the Universal logo, which was akin to the plot taking place in the late 1800s
