"One of the early enticements announced for the Switch 2 back in April was the reveal of a new “GameCube” catalog selection for Nintendo Switch Online (Nintendo’s subscription service that gives you access to online play, along with a huge library of retro titles). The GameCube library of games remains a rich reservoir of titles, many of which haven’t been brought into the “Switch” era of Nintendo (and many of which are commanding ridiculous high prices on the resellers market). This week, Nintendo announced it’s latest addition to the service: “Chibi-Robo!”.
Originally released in Japan in 2005 (and in the U.S. in 2006), “Chibi-Robo” was a quirky (but charming) 3rd person platformer game revolving around a small helper robot going around the house and solving problems for the family. What’s remarkable is how the story isn’t just “doing chores”, over the course of the game (as the story unfolds), you’ll end up helping save the marriage of the parents in the family, making contact with aliens, and fight off a robot invasion! This type of gameplay innovation was a hallmark of the “GameCube/PS2/Xbox” era, and not something explored as often by big “Triple A” developers these days.
