Castro resigns.

like most said i expected him to die in office before he resigned. i guess its good for the cuban people hes gone.

Joining other people in saying that I thought he would stay in office until he died so this was definitly surprising to hear. It will be interesting to see how Cuba fairs without him now.

I see a few people here comparing Castro to Hitler, at least in a backwards sort of way.

Castro is no saint, but I think the American people have been conditioned to perceive him as some sort of evil living Stalin or even Saddam, and he's really not on that level at all.

It's also interesting, I find, that people outside of the U.S. (even in Canada), his rep usually falls more on the neutral side of opinion.

Castro's no saint, but he's not totally evil.

Well I'm one of the ones who don't hate Castro, but I am rather neutral about him. I think the only issue I ever had with him would probably be the time in 1963, where he allowed Russia to put Nuclear Iintermediate Range Ballistic Missles on Cuban soil, forcing the US and Russia to play a game of "Nuclear chicken." Other than that, the only complaints I've ever heard about Castro usually came from those Cubans who left Cuba for other places who've never liked his policies.

In short, has Castro Killed 6 Million of his own people, just because he thinks they're a major threat to the well being of his country (Much like Hitler did back in WW2?) No.. (Has Castro ever created the euivalent of Russian gulags and have put people in them for speaking up against him?) More than likely he's excuted some and exiled others who have been threats to his safety, but I've yet to hear one case where that's happened. (and what about Castro Killing or imprisoning people who want to defy him, or overthrow him, much like Saddam Hussein did?) Well that too has been questionable, but still, I've yet to hear of Castro using mustard gas, or chemical weapons on his people.)

Heck compared to what Hitler, Stalin, and even Saddam has done, Castro is a more of a saint than a sinner (unlike the other three previously mentioned dictators. (The only black spot being the 1963 Missile Crisis.)

So I don't know why Some folks think Castro's evil... heck I haven't come to like him, but at least I could learn to live with him. (After all, He's never really done anything majorly wrong to make himself look bad, and usually his actions are not that of an evil dictator.. He's let people who don't like him leave, he's executed very few people, and he's only jailed threats that are detrimental to the country in general. Other than that, and the fact that he's maybe kept the country under a bit of a strict (but not too harsh) dictatorship, shows to me that at least he's been leniant.. Most other dictators would be killing off their people because of ethnic difference.. Castro hasn't done that.

Sin in closing Castro is a bit more benevolent that Hitler. He's a bit more leniant than Stalin, and I think he's a bit more mentally stable than Saddam was. To some he may be evil, but to others, like myself, I think he's been less of a problem in the global community and history than those other three dictators previously mentioned. And that's basically about it.
