I am not referring to any of their online games like their website-exclusive Flash games or FusionFall. And in terms of properties, games specific to one property are out of the question. No, I am talking about block party games containing multiple CN franchises.
Considering that Christina Miller wants to focus on building a universe around the shows, it is no surprise that games like Battle Crashers would be developed. Except they are no good at all. And this is no new issue. Critics were not kind to the first CN video game Cartoon Network Speedway for the Gameboy Advance, and its "sequel" Cartoon Network Racing, while an improvement, was not much better. To be fair, Punchtime Explosion could be defended on its given standards.
If the network really wants to build its universe with its multiple media outings (so how are the recent CN books?), it needs to fix two core issues with its games. The main issue is the lack of interaction with the selected CN characters, which were major drawbacks for Speedway and Battle Crashers. Would it have hurt them to at least give each character a voice? Even reuse audio if you want--just let us know that these are CN characters! Where is the personality for these beloved characters?
The other issue is admittedly harder and less anticipated for fixing, which is why most CN video games are nothing much more than mediocre. There is nothing really special about the gameplay. I have little to offer, but something--anything--unique in the formula could be enough to warrant even a decent game!
That is my take on it. What do you guys think? Remember that this could be important for CN's future in alternate media.
