WARNING: SUPER LONG AND RAMBLY SPOILER REVIEW BELOW READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

You know a couple of decades back when comic book movies had started what I like started the "yeah Marvel can actually make good movies" age with fare like Men in Black and Blade, we lived in an era where there were honestly to the general populuar consensus very few fully recongnizable super heroes. Ones that through pop culture osmosis you would know even if you read a comic and back in the day it was DC who had more then Marvel who really at the time had Spider-Man and Hulk. Like there were fans for a lot other chararacters but not ones that you'd instantly known what they looked like or what their deal was if you were told about them. DC though had the trinity where even if you didn't know who comic book characters are you'd know about Batman, Superman and yes even if it was to a lesser extent, Wonder Woman. Mustly due to their appearances in other mediums that signified their importance. There was honestly another member of that group who would be instantly recongnizable at the time but not because they were well recieved or loved but more because they were mocked and insulted. And that hero would be Aquaman. Yeah back when very few people would ever assume many comic book characters would ever get their own films, many came to mock Aquaman. Mostly because of his appearance in that cheesy Superfriends TV series line. Yeah the other heroes had been massively neutred and made to be dry and dull in that cartoon line but there was still the image of Superman punching, of Wonder Woman kicking and of Batman now celebrated for his darkside thanks to the works of Frank Miller and even the animated Batman TV series. What did Arthur Curry have going for him? A weird psychic ring effect when he talked to fish and riding everywhere on a sea horse. That didn't really sell him as this cool and epic hero thus for years upon years he was seen as one of the loser or lame ass members of the DC Heroes. I remember this first really happening in Cartoon Network ads and then seeing it sky rocket with all the Family Guy and Robot Chicken jokes made about him and just a lot of general dumping on Aquaman. But as a kid I kind of thought that was the point of the character. Like when they showed him as this bare chested, hook hand super cyncial bad ass in Justice League I had a hard time buying it even if that was a lot closer to the character actually was. Eventually though either due to growing to like the JL's take or maybe getting sick of the jokes made about the guy I kind of wanted him to be in something major to shut people up. Like his own series or film that would gain massive attention that would be the signifier "okay yeah that old image of Aquaman isn't what the guy's about now. It's like showing Adam West next to Christian Bale: even if they are playing the same character one's playing them differently that obviously reperesents how they should be while the other is super outdated and should no longer be used anymore." Which yeah took awhile to get going with that failed TV pilot and who knows how many variations of a film script were passed but finally we are getting an Aquaman film. He certainly didn't get any love for his blink and miss it cameo in BvS and... how useful or even how much attention he really got in Justice League is up to serious debate, but hey it's happened. In the middle of a rather weird period of the DCEU. Pretty obvious after how Justice League did in not just score but in box office performance that we are heading for a reboot of the entire line of these movies. One totally free of the influence of Zack Snyder (who yeah stlll has an executive producer role on this moive since it obviously really started back when he still sort of called the shots) and one keeping only certain elements that worked as honestly I have a feeling Batman and Superman will be one of those tossed over elements especially since for the first time in... EVER for DC someone else namely Wonder Woman has proven popular and marketable in films without the Worlds Finest so yeah they're obviously keeping Diana and I guess seeing who else is worth keeping. Which puts a lot of attention on this movie to see if that can be the case and can we finally get this super cool and bad ass Aquaman movie that properly shows off the character and how cool he can be and finally erase that old outdated image out of our heads.

And the answer is... well in terms of action this actually really works especially the last grand climax and showing off what Aquaman can do fully formed is really impressive... but quite honestly a lot of this movie feels so over explained and dry and calculated that it's hard to get into and something that's meant to really be a romp is just so safely guiding the kid's hand the entire time and never really lets go honestly does ruin a lot of the experience for me.

I will say in terms of visual splendor there actually is quite a lot of this movie to like. Yeah some of the effects of tranistioning from regular land to the water look a bit stiff (like for example going from an area to Atlantis to that airpocket where adult Arthur meets Vulko for instance) and you can tell how much of this is CGI but honestly it does look when a lot of it is on screen pretty aesthetically pleasing. Like for example any time there's a big trident fight even the opening one with Atlanta defeating those Mer-Guards especially the tracking shot around the living room and her hitting one up near the ceiling. And then you get the two conflicts between Arthur and Orm and the first is really spiffy seeing them swim around the sea bed avoiding those volcano slots and the actual breaking of the staff and then when Arthur gets the full power of Aqua man and breaking Orm's after using that perfected spin technique to take on his shots. Honestly I always thought tridents were a very stylish weapon but this is the first movie I've seen that really showcases how awesome they can be in a battle even compared to a sword with the various twists and grabs and thrusts you can do with them that operate quite differently from standard sword fights which gives the battle a unique aesthetic. And I especially like the ending battle not only getting to see full displays of Mera's power (I admit her using water bending on all the alcohol to take out some of the elite guards coming after her in the Italian village and pushing some of the fish men into the sea was spiffy but that was her more at full force in you know the climax) but yeah of Arthur's power in how in that battle between... well crab people (I know they were given a different name as they're one of the seven sea houses but they look like crab people and even felt like crab people so i'm calling them crab people) and Orm's forces Arthur just comes in with this giant sea beast and absolutley wrecks both forces so viciously. In hindsight narrative wise I do have some problems with that but in terms of full visual spectacle and a showcase of why you don't mess with Aquaman that was really cool to see. Heck even Arthur's early battles with the sea pirates and flinging wheels at them or slamming them into the submarine or later in how he used those bells to take out Black Manta were pretty good so honestly all of the action in the movie looks impressive. And there's a lot of solid shots of Atlantis or of speeding through the sea even in the flashbacks that really work. I will also give credit for the ending of this movie actually ending with Atlanta popping up to Orm saying they don't need to fight any longer and his actually happiness seeing her again (as yeah it was the father who likely bansihed/tried killing her that Orm wasn't on board with) even when being taken away felt like one of the few earnest emotional moments this movie had and honestly felt different then most other super hero encounters go. It doesn't raise Orm much as a villain but at least it actually does feel different from how most of these encounters would end so heads up there. And there were also a few jokes I did laugh at or at least appreciate: Arthur being recognized in the bar and the guys wanting to take a picture of a local hero and Arthur being reluctant at first but getting into the photos, Mera eating the flowers at that Italian town thinking that's how they were going to go and later telling Arthur about his Pinocchio strategy form earlier coming from a book and Arthur admitting he only knew of it from a movie, and one of the newscasters having this whole Atlantis theory. How it pays off wasn't good and really when the other newscasters shot back "you don't have proof" he should of just said "we know aliens, giant monsters and gods exist in this world, the era of doubt in this sort of thing is OVER" but eh at least the idea is funny. And... honestly that's really it of the positives as honestly a lot of this movie just didn't work for me.

And though there's probably less plot holes then something like Man of Steel it does come down to one huge problem throughout the movie that honestly in some ways even something like Man of Steel handled better: no one ever shuts up about the exposition and the narrative throughout this movie. I guess there are a few quiet shots but quite honestly everything else is either incredibly telegraphed and obnoxiously poured on the wound. Whether it's about the legacy of Black Manta's grand father and his resentment towards Arthur in not saving his father (which Arthur later acts like his greatest mistake and what would of gotten Mera hurt more... even though he just shrugged off challenging and failing to defeat his brother and how that would of gotten him killed if Mera hadn't saved him and how they were nearly blown up by ocean cannons and had to go and fake their own death before being shot at hundreds of time and honestly she was the one who was tracked not Arthur so... why is the whole Black Manta his biggest failure exactly?) and about Arthur not wanting to be king but wanting to get the trident just to the stop the war between the Atlantias and the surface world (which is beat on like every other scene in the movie. Even in the last scenes that's still constantly brought up about him being a half breed and un fit to rule because of his legacy and it just gets so old after awhile) and showing how Vulko trained him but hid what happened to his mother from him and then finding the trident and what happened with his mother and then the ultimate challenge to get the trident and honestly it NEVER felt like people shut up and just let the plot played out. Like the exuecitves or Wan wanted to make sure we got what the point and themeing is of every single scene and just beat us over the head with it in just plain unnatural and flat expositionary ways that really just drag the entire thing down. Like honestly a lot of this movie is like a lot of other super hero movies from the hot headed jerk having to learn to be a king like Thor or about their being this ancient civilization where an extremist wants to go to war with the rest of the world like Black Panther and about learning to embrace your destiny as a hero like with Wonder Woman and so many other movies. So though the plot is kind of generic and honestly there is really no interesting themeing in this one (as it's really just "humans are bad because they pollute the seas and go to war with one another" and "well yeah but don't kill them all because you don't know them all" and it doesn't go really much beyond that which means this movie is ridiculously shallow) I wouldn't mind it so much if it felt really fun to go along this journey. But it doesn't because it feels like you're being guided tightly and having your hand held the entire time to have everything explained to you (even about why Marius decided to follow Orm which yeah did that really needed to be spelled out by Mera? Cause to me it sure didn't need to be) so everyone is just conversing without a huge amount of emoting. Like Arthur is trying to be smary and cool and have this heart but a lot of his acting just feels like his narrating over the ending and beginning: "I'm just telling you what I'm feeling instead of you actually really feeling it." Like a major rule of film making in general is show don't tell and this just tells and telegraphs so much of it that it's hard to get a grasp for. I haven't seen a movie have this consistent problem since Isle of Dogs and even in that movie there was at least a major language barrier and a lot honestly more amusing banter between the characters while here after every decent joke there felt like a lot of groaners. Like Mera saying "oh if he's going to be king we're all doomed" and one of the mer guards having to stick his head in the toliet to get water and yeah lame bits like that. But again just all of these characters feel so flat since all they do is just talk about the story and if they do have personlaities a lot of just feel spoon fed to us. Like with Mera (who Arthur has to even ask what her name is just because I guess the writers realized people who don't know the source material or don't watch the credits wouldn't know... even though Justice League showed the two conversing and that they knew each other and this movie again references Justice League one time so obviously they should know one another but apparently don't) who just talks about being bethroed or having grown up with Orm and under Vulko's instruction but you don't feel any comraddery between the characters. And you especially don't feel any like romance between Arthur and Mera. They're trying to banter and expose vulernability but between it being so stock of "I believe in you because you come form this lineacy" and "the surface isn't so bad" it just feels so one note and you don't buy a connection. Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor are probably so far the only couple in the DCEU to really feel earnest about a relationship as this is pretty Clark Kent/Lois Lane in how they connect. I mean they're trying for jokes and heart but if it doesn't connect due to how basic and telegraphed it is can that really count? I mean this movie even does that "oh there's destruction and death all around us but it's time for our first big epic make out over our love" and.... yeah you can tell this was still being made and worked on when the Snyders still had some control over the DCEU as that has their thumb print in it. Vulko is just the basic mentor with the secret that just watches Arthur and tries like tricking Orm into delaying his tactis but again everything is so telegraphed with him even him telling Orm why he doesn't want to follow him anymore at the end and there feels so much held back stiff emotion. Especially from Orm who the music and through the visuals wants to tell me how powerful he is or sinister or maybe at some point sympathetic but the performance comes in so one note. He doesn't become a giant monster beast and at least his plan makes some sort of sense but you get no emotion from the guy. Sadly after 5 years General Zod is still the best villain in the DCEU since I at least bought into his anger and resentment and that performance actually had some weight. This is just flat and his speech seeing Arthur again while he's chained up to any time he mentions wanting to be Ocean Master just doesn't work. Even characters like Black Manta who should be really interesting or really at least powerfully acted don't work because the scene of his dad dying or even of him getting the Black Manta attire from his middling performance and overwritten dialogue just don't connect whatsoever. Also the end credits tease of "oh he's alive and is working with some super atlantis fan still looking for Aqua Man" is rather weak. I can't believe i'm saying this but... if the person who found him was Lex Luthor and we saw him being added to the Legion of Doom that would at least mean something. Granted Justice League 2 isn't happening like anytime soon and a lot of that is probably being flushed but why should we care that this guy is still around? Aquaman is like 10 times stronger at least then he was before when he beat Black Manta and the performance isn't anything to go after. When Loki was still around in the end credits of Thor he had this obvious new power up that even before Avengers meant you knew he had something else to challenge his brother but... what Black Manta has a super obsessed nerd who knows something about Aqua man? How is that good sequel bate? Even Doctor Strange's Baron Mondo was at least looking to elminate magic seeing how people mis use it which sets up an interesting new motivation. This guy is just going after Aqua Man because he killed his dad... again. What's that suppose to mean? Also speaking of characters Atlanta doing the whole "oh I must part with you to protect you and our son" with Tom wasn't emotional either and neither was her popping up in the cove. I'm not sure it was like a terrible twist as though they didn't show Atlanta dying you normally expect this kind of character to have died to inspire our hero even more but again it wasn't handled interestingly outside of her again interacting with Orm near the end. And honestly Atlanta and Tom if their relationship had more time to play out like with her blowing up the TV or her taking care of the baby Arthur could of been interesting but again just flatly told over Arthur's narration so hard to get any investment in whatsoever. And of course as I hinted at earlier there's a major problem with the climax which though is cool and everything... doesn't really work narrative wise. Either we should of seen much of a full decimination of Arthur taking out all of those forces (since he still let's face it killed like thousnads of crab people and Atlantians) or he should of used his powers just to hold everyone back just to have this one big epic throw down with Orm. There still being forces around though despite decimiating a good sum and them still fielding loyalty to Arthur because of the trident just doesn't really work especially when there isn't a lot of feeling of legacy or honor or of even kinship that makes something like say the climax of Black Panther work but this falls really flat. I mean it looks cool and impressive but just looking cool doesn't mean anything. Sad that was something criticized for by Zack Snyder that is still an issue here.

So yeah despite some good fights a few decent jokes and honestly not having a terrible story the pretty on the nose overly fed constant exposition being hammered into your skull with some fairly flat and not interesting characters really does not work for me. This honestly doesn't feel that separate from Man of Steel since though the plotting is better and there is an attempt at color and interesting locales the story and the constant beating on the head points do feel too much. Except MoS was at least trying for loftier ideas while this is just trying for this basic tale of "guy needs to learn to be the hero king his people really need" and... not much of a story more then that. I guess if all you care about are the pretty visuals and neat effects you'll be fine and I will give credit that this movie makes the idea of Aquaman cool and hopefully will make people not make fun of the character anymore but... he did not get a good movie. Even in stuff like Justice League or Suicide Squad I felt there was more on character and interaction and connection that worked which though those aren't great movies made me score them higher. This doesn't have that so honestly this only comes in just above Man of Steel for me.

I really enjoyed the movie but it clearly could’ve been worked on to tighten things up. I really liked everything with Black Manta but that could’ve been cut out of the film. The special effects were great for the most part but like other DC movies I didn’t like how they relied on it so much for some of the character costumes and some of the effects that could’ve easily been practical. Still the story was fine even though the pacing was a little weird and the structure wasn’t all that sound. Mamoa did a good job basically playing himself but I agree with Jim’s review that Heard seemed a little flat. I really like Orm in this movie and one of the uses of CGI in this movie I really like was how they used it to animate the eyes on his mask. It was a very cool touch. I don’t think I’ll watch it again until it comes on digital or 4K though. The movie really felt a little too long and I don’t think I would see it again in the theatres. A really good effort by DC and I think it lived up to the hype. I’m really glad it’s doing well too.

I will quote from my own blog:

"Aquaman is one of DC Comics' legacy characters, one who's been around since the Golden Age, but in recent times has often been maligned & mocked because of his telepathic powers. Those critics tend to ignore, rather than forget, that Aquaman is relatively in the same strength class as Superman & Wonder Woman, two of his Justice League teammates."

That having been said, the movie put more emphasis on Aquaman's strength, not his telepathy, which he only will use when he needs it, just like in the 1967 cartoons.

Temuera Morrison is a new name to me. Looks so much like a Burt Young clone, I felt like saying, "Yo, Paulie!".

Amber Heard as Mera: :nurse:!!

We get the canonical costumes for Arthur & Orm late, Mera had hers from the go, but is it just me or did her costume color change on land? Orm is and always has been a pompous jerkwad. Black Manta will figure into the sequel.

Like, Randall Park in both MCU & DCEU movies in the same year? Whodathunk?

Hmm. I have mixed, but mostly positive, feelings.

I can see why this is doing so well. The effects and CGI, while a "lot", are really good and frankly, this may be the best looking film set mostly underwater ever. The action scenes are amazing. James Wan has an eye for epic spectacle. This may be the most comic-book-y looking CBM this year, and in a year with Infinity War and Spider-Verse, that is saying something. The climax has to be seen in IMAX to be believed, but the Black Manta encounter is no slouch either.

Unfortunately, the film's script is...not bad, but not nearly as polished as Wonder Woman, and the highs don't quite reach the highs of Man of Steel or BvS (but the lows aren't as low). While it's noble that WB is trying to change DC's "dark and edgy" image with the normal audience, the humor in this film is a pretty mixed bag.

Fortunately, the leads are likable enough to make up for this. Aquaman is way, way more likable here than in Justice League. He isn't just a muscle-dude here. Mera also holds her own as another strong DC heroine. Their romance is kinda standard, but nothing eye-rolling. The supporting cast is fine, but mostly not super memorable.

Ocean Master is a fine villain, but for better or worse, he gets overshadowed by the intense Black Manta, despite Manta appearing way less. But man, that costume translated so well into live action.

The plot is pretty standard stuff, but I do appreciate the amount of world building we get for Atlantis, similar to the treatment Wakanda got in Black Panther. SO I feel the sequel will be able to deliver a more original story.

For the most part, I do think this is a step in the right direction for DC along with Wonder Woman. Likable, heroic lead, inspirational tone, embracing the color of a comic book, etc. The one drawback is that, at times, it's almost too simple, like they wanted to avoid any of the controversies from previous films.

But this film is still very enjoyable, and one of the best in the DCEU so far. Even with a so-so script, the effects alone are reason to see this on the big screen.

For me this had everything I could want in an AQUAMAN movie.
Awesome effects. Atlantis and the underwater creatures look fabulous.
Both of Aquaman's best villains, Ocean Master and Black Manta, were handle well.
Good chemistry between Arthur and Mera.

Well Done Cast and Crew, B+

OUTRAGEOUS!

Went and saw this Monday night (New Years Eve) with my wife.

I'll note that this is the first and only DC movie that I've seen (at home or in theaters) since 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises". I'm a blank slate to DC movies for the last decade.

I REALLY liked it! Had some great scenes between Arthur and Mera, the quest for the trident felt compelling, there was a proper build up to the final battle...just a lot to love. And they didn't kill any of the cool characters in the final battle! They found a way to hang on to Ocean Master, and to Arthur's mother, and just...a happy ending. I needed that after the last few Marvel movies...

I noticed that this was from the Director of the Conjuring films (James Wan), which are favorites of ours...so that increased my enjoyment, strangely enough (and that scene with the fish monsters...felt like a horror film for a few seconds).

In the scene where Black Manta was building his armor, my wife (a comic book blank slate) turns to me and says "Okay, so who's he supposed to be in the comics." I said "This is Black Manta." Her response: "Really? That's his name?!?". I said "Yes, a lot of black characters in the 60's and 70's had "Black" in their names."

I still found the character compelling, though as a villain, he was bit out of his league (I don't feel he's a major threat for the sequel...unless he gets powered up even further).

Still, overall, this was just a great way to end 2018!

Aquaman

Wow, this is the highest grossing DC movie of all time? Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. With the exception of Wonder Woman and The Dark Knight, I actually believe you have to go all the way back to Superman II to find a decent one. And this movie is decent, if not decent enough to make this particular milestone. But if DC movies were actually better in the past it undoubtedly wouldn't be.

Frankly, I amused this movie got made at all. Simply because I remember that 20-30 years ago was when water themed movies always ended in catastrophe. Cutthroat Island and Waterworld being the two biggest examples. But when I was a kid and teenager there was sort of a consensus in Hollywood that nautical themed movies are prohibitively expensive and box office poison. You can make bank with a shark movie like Jaws or even a disaster movie like The Poseidon Adventure. But underwater worlds and pirate movies always broke a studio by being expensive and not watched by anybody.

The one exception to this rule was Titanic, and it's only exception I can of. And that was still damn expensive. It pretty much had to be the highest grossing movie of all time just to earn a reasonable profit. People didn't see that movie for the special effects anyways. Imagine how much the studio could have made with that exact same tearjerker teenage girl-bait script but a normal pricetag.

Then Pirates of the Caribbean came along and suddenly those kinds of movies became more feasible and reasonably budgeted. I'm not saying this movie didn't cost a lot of money to make. But there are not the problems of underwater destroyed sets that there were before this kind of movie became CGI based, instead of based on practical effects. And the movie still looks great.

I will probably do a bit more of an in-depth review when I get the Blu-Ray and watch it a couple more times, but as of now, I have three observations.

1. The movie is funny. Nicole Kidman eating a live goldfish is funny. Mera and Aquaman eating a bouquet of roses is funny. The Pinocchio thing was funny. It should tell you something that this is also one of the more enjoyable DC films, particularly in the Extended Universe.

2. I agree 100% with Black Manta blaming Aquaman for his father's death. He's supposed to be a superhero. You can't pick and choose who to save. Him turning his back on him when he COULD have saved him was just as good as murder.

3. I am a little awestruck by Amber Heard's beauty. She is just divine. And I love her costume for totally uncool, embarrassing reasons. I've heard of this actress before, but I never saw her in anything before this. She is absolutely radiant. I would offer a better judgment of her performance than that, but I ashamedly wasn't paying all that much attention to what she was saying. Which makes me feel like a bit of a heel. But I mean, she is SO unusual in that respect, even for Hollywood actresses. Don't hate me.

So yeah, I liked the movie. I had a good time. ****.

Okay hear me out, Isn't it kind of crazy how CN never thought about doing a Kids Next Door x Teen Titans OG crossover back in the 2000s? There's five members of Sector V, five titans, and they both have super cool HQs. I'm telling you guys, a TT and KND crossover would've been so epic!
Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
