Adult Swim Announces New Programming Line-Up for 2011-12 Season
New Series and Additional Episodes Ordered for Returning Programs
Adult Swim “Owns the 9ight” with Star-Studded Upfront Event Featuring the Legendary Jay-Z
Adult Swim celebrated a new slate of programming for the 2011-12 season last night during their star-studded annual Upfront event in New York City. Coming off a stellar first quarter, in which the network added an hour of primetime to its schedule, Adult Swim ranked as cable television’s #1 network for total day delivery of adults 18-34 and adults 18-49. Adult Swim also has ranked #1 in total day delivery of adults 18-24 and men 18-24 every quarter since becoming its own individually ranked network in 2005 (23 consecutive quarters).
New original series and specials:

· NTSF:SD:SUV:: – NTSF:SD:SUV:: (National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle), is a clandestine team of government agents working together to protect San Diego from numerous terrorist threats coming in daily from such evil countries as Mexico, Canada and Guam. This team of highly trained operatives has only one job: saving your ass so you can drive your Prius and see your movies in 3-D without worrying about living in a country run by no-good terrorists. As with many other acronym-ed police procedurals that dominate the airwaves, NTSF:SD:SUV::’s season of 15-minute episodes is ripped from the headlines and full of suspense, action, drama, cliffhangers, yelling, passionate love-making, more yelling, death and plenty of pregnant pauses. NTSF:SD:SUV:: is created by Paul Scheer and stars Scheer, Rebecca Romjin, Rob Riggle, Kate Mulgrew, Brandon Johnson, June Diane Raphael, Martin Starr and S.A.M., the first sentient robot on television. Paul Scheer and Jonathan Stern are executive producers. Curtis Gwinn is co-executive producer. Series premieres this summer on Adult Swim.

· THE VENTURE BROS. SPECIAL – FROM THE LADLE TO THE GRAVE: THE STORY OF SHALLOW GRAVY – See the Venture Family as you’ve never seen them before: in a 15-minute documentary-style animated special. Follow the meteoric rise, the equally meteoric fall, and the decidedly un-meteor-like second coming of the most important band Hank Venture, Dermott Fitctel and H.E.L.P.eR. robot have ever been in: Shallow Gravy. If you’re hungry for rock, then open wide, because here comes a ladle of heavy metal fire and metaphoric meat drippings. Launched on Adult Swim in August 2004, The Venture Bros. is an inspired spoof of 1960s action cartoon shows such as Johnny Quest. Created by Jackson Publick III (King of the Hill, The Tick), the 30-minute animated series follows the bizarre misadventures of the Venture family. The Venture Bros. Special – From the Ladle to the Grave: The Story of Shallow Gravy premieres July 24 on Adult Swim.

· THE HEART, SHE HOLLER – The Heart, She Holler is a new live-action soap opera about folk who ain’t never used soap or seen an opera. It’s a satire on the emotional Hee-Hawification of America, set in a town so inbred, the folks have become almost supernaturally wrong. The series is produced by PFFR, and stars Patton Oswalt and Heather Lawless. The Heart, She Holler premieres this fall on Adult Swim.

· CHINA, IL – Frank and Steve Smith are brothers who teach in the history department of a state university in China, Illinois. They also happen to be legends in their own minds who will often sacrifice facts, lessons and syllabi for the sake of being awesome. Created by Brad Neely, executive produced by Brad Neely (Creased Comics) and Daniel Weidenfeld and produced by Titmouse, Inc. (Metalocalypse), China, IL premieres this fall on Adult Swim.

· TIGHT BROS – Tight Bros is a new animated comedy that follows two moronic “clergybros” who are on a quest for fat beats, hot chicks and tricked out cell phones. Vince and Aaron were called by God to spread a holy message: one of peace, love and tearin’ up the club. By day the two sell religious kitsch at a kiosk in Viceroy Del Sol mall. By night they hunt for babes, but only with mega tans and super smooth waxes in place. Premiering in the spring of 2012, Tight Bros is created and written and executive produced by Sam Johnson and Chris Marcil.

· BLACK DYNAMITE – Based on 2009′s critically-acclaimed feature film, Black Dynamite, the new 30-minute animated series will premiere in the spring of 2012. The Black Dynamite animated series further chronicles the exploits of the central character, Black Dynamite, and his crew. Under the direction of Carl Jones (The Boondocks), the series features The Voice talent of Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Kym Whitley and Byron Minns, all of whom starred in the feature film. The feature film is an outrageous action comedy-spoof that follows ex-CIA agent and full-time ladies man, Black Dynamite, who’s out to avenge the death of his brother against kung-fu masters, drug-dealing pimps and The Man. Black Dynamite, the animated series, is being produced by Ars Nova Entertainment. Carl Jones is executive producer. Jon Steingart and Jillian Apfelbaum also serve as executive producers. Brian Ash is co-executive producer. Scott Sanders, Michael Jai White and Byron Minns are producers. Black Dynamite is being animated by Titmouse, Inc.

The closing theme shred guitar performance is by co-creator Maiellaro. The cast also does a lot of the things they’ve done over the past 10 years: look for a new place to put their stuff, pay rent, make gut-wrenching decisions and talk about life while sipping herbal tea. Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 premiered May 8 and continues every Sunday at 11:45 p.m. (ET/PT) on Adult Swim.

· CHILDRENS HOSPITAL – Childrens Hospital is an award-winning facility where happy and healthy children are looked after by doctors who deeply care about them and the overall well-being of their community. Television and features an all-star cast. The series is based on the Webby Award winning digital series that debuted on TheWB.com in 2008. After existing quietly in an anonymous suburb, “Jon” accepts an offer for the family to participate in a reality show based on their lives. Season 3 of Delocated premieres in the spring of 2012.

A mix of animated and live-action programming, with some big names in the comedy world attached to it. Looks like AS is trying the animated sitcom format, with that one pilot in store.

Also, I'm wondering what the Dan Harmon show would be about. Dan Harmon is the creator of the NBC show, Community.

Edit: Oh, and no mention of The Boondocks, which probably means that the show is done.

Well, that's it. Titan Maximum has been canceled. Out of CN's triple robot output last year of Robotomy/Sym-Bionic Titan/Titan Maximum, none of them lived to see a second season.

If anyone in the industry has any ideas for a show about robots from now on, DO NOT pitch it to Cartoon Network. I personally had some good concepts going for a mecha show that I was thinking of one day pitching to Cartoon Network, but I'm certainly not letting them see it now.

I'll actually laugh if Voltron does amazingly for Nicktoons.

out of all the shows up there im only interested in 5 shows.... and they are all old shows....

Surprisingly good slate this year, despite being pretty much the same type of stuff as last year. Kinda disappointed that the Venture Bros special is only 15 minutes, and I don't really like the Tight Bros retool. Looking forward to NTSF, Black Dynamite, and possibly The Heart, She Holler (which has Patton Oswalt, so it can't be all bad). Too bad about Boondocks, though. Out of all the pilots, I definitely want Major Lazer and the Odd Future show to go to series.

Sort of surprised that Mongo Wrestling Alliance and Frankenhole is getting another season. While I do enjoy Frankenhole from what I saw, Mongo left a lot to be desired. Out of the new stuff, I'll probably try Black Dynamite and Tight Bros.

Shame that last season was Boondock's Final season, but since it was implied the creator said it would be, this doesn't come as a shock for me.

I remember a response to a viewer card where AS said they were working on Titan Maximum season 2. I guess that fell through.

Kind of surprised to see Frankenhole coming back. I didn't think the ratings were that good, but I'll take whatever Dino show I can get.

No more Tim & Eric? Huzzah!

New Metalocalypse, Frankenhole, The Venture Bros., Robot Chicken, Superjail!, Children's Hospital, and Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 is great, but kind of disappointed at the lack of Titan Maximum. So, Tight Bros, China, IL, and Black Dynamite are the only new cartoons right? The rest are live-action? So far the only live-action [as] show I've liked is Children's Hospital (And that started as a webshow). I too wonder what the Dan Harmon pilot's about, love Community!

Odd Future, Major Lazer, Jay-Z and Nick Cannon all do pilots for [as]?

What?

If we are actually talking 4 pilots from rap artists (as the upfront suggests, that'll end up one show at best, and unless [as] stick to being contrarians, Nick Cannon, OFWGKTA and Major Lazer are probably gonna get cut if only for lack of name recognition relative to Jay-Z. That's a shame because I think that OFWGKTA and Major Lazer would make for way more interesting cartoons. The Major Lazer character is obviously built to be a cartoon, and the psychotic ramblings of Odd Future's Wolf Haley character would similarly translate into animation well.

Granted, it looks like OFWGKTA won't be doing a cartoon. Which is weird because Tyler the Creator references Adventure Time atleast twice on his album, Goblin, and he is in general a big animation fan, scouring e-bay for Spongebob merch. Still, whatever they do will have to go up against Jay-Z.

Side note: This is a weird post to be writing on about [as].

Anyway, I also wonder why they are going so hard on this. While acts like Lazer and Odd Future are natural fits for the majority of [adult swim]'s viewership (many of whom are the college kids who listen to those acts, and yes, I am guilty as charged of that,) Jay-Z seems odd and Nick Cannon just plain out of place. Jay-Z, I can see because he's worth half a billion, and he's a business man with massive hustle. This is another brand, this is a place to keep himself relevant as he nears the 20 year mark in his rap career, though it's odd because as I said in the Jay-Z thread, reality seems like a better fit, and that's not [as] territory. Cannon seems like a complete misfire from the start. He's too mainstream to fit with the [adult swim] we play music from Ninja Tune and Ghostly International ethos, yet he's not a name like T-Pain or Jay-Z. What would his draw be?

/so weird. weird, weird, weird.

Off-topic: Nice to see another OFWGKTA fan around here. I made a talkback for Goblin in the music forum, but no one posted in it. Like to hear your thoughts on it.
:)

Anyway, I'm interested also in the Bob Odenkirk project. He's usually very funny.

I haven't been in our music forum enough. Been wasting too much time on /mu/ and nerdcorenow.

That said, while Goblin is a breath of fresh air, I can't help but think it would've been HipHop's Nevermind if they'd had a just little production oversight. Yes, usually labels ruin albums with that, especially lately, but having just a bit of external opinion is sometimes useful on creative projects. Nevermind and In Utero were originally gonna be a lot closer to Bleach - raw and less accessible - but the producers who Nirvana worked with reeled that back, sometimes to the chagrin of Kurt Cobain. That said, Goblin's still a crazy record, especially relative to the last decade of commercial HipHop, yet it's getting some rotation in relatively mainstream places like satellite radio. Two years ago, it would've been lucky to be a college radio staple, but I think it's an album that fits the backlash against hyper-produced, melodic pieces like My Dark Twisted Fantasy. Culturally, we're due for a big shift again, and HipHop is due for it's Grunge, and OFWGKTA may be the harbingers of that change.

Anyway, I'm interested also in the Bob Odenkirk project. He's usually very funny.

Yeah, that seems a lock, especially with Tim and Eric essentially off the slate. Having a live-action sketch comedy to pair with Robot Chicken seems wise.

China, IL should be fun, but that's mostly because I've yet to feel dissappointed by Brad Neely. It should be interesting to see how his work as animates as well.

Heh, thanks for reminding me about Goblin. That's been on my to-play list for a little, but I haven't got around to it yet. I'll try to fix that soon and bump the thead.

I think that's all she wrote for Boondocks, Titan Maximum, and most likely anime once Brotherhood is through and the Bleach order runs out. It's pretty clear by this slate that AS is solidifying its different direction and becoming more of a standard network. Problem is, I'm not sure I like it. It looks like a blend of bland pedestrian programming and some programs that look just plain too stupid (The Heart, She Holler) or gross (Tight Bros., among a lot of other things) to have any shot elsewhere.

I place my hope in Black Dynamite being good, because that's all that seems worth looking forward to in the coming couple of years.

Oh man I hope Major Lazer becomes a series. I've been dying for that to be picked up ever since I heard Diplo talk about it in an interview over a year ago.

After giving it some thought, the new series actually seem pretty good. Holler is automatically going to be awesome because of Patton Oswalt, Black Dynamite at worst will be an okay replacement for The Boondocks (I really wish McGruder would have continued it), Tight Bros premise is pretty good and iirc is from the people who made HIMYM, NTSF also has some really funny people on it and can't be worse than the other live action shows, and China IL has an okay premise but probably will bomb.

Note that they only mentioned "returning" acquisitions. The door is still open for anime at the moment.

AS ran a bump recently saying that that they were still interested in anime and looking for new ones, if it helps.

Eh, I don't think seeing all (or most) of them go to series would be that unlikely. They all have pretty big names attached to them, unlike the AS's regular pilots, which are usually smaller side-projects featuring people already associated with AS.

As someone who's wanted Adult Swim to get rid of anime since 2008, I can say that this is fairly standard of them to not announce their productions till the last minute. So it's probably not going anywhere.

As for the pilots from celebrities, I would need actual premises to say anything. I have a feeling they'll all be live action.

Yeah and while I don't mind live-action on Adult Swim if it's entertaining it'd be nice if they had more cartoons on the way. I swear it's like a little success from live-action was all it took for them to green light a ton more live-action pilots.

There's a few shows I'm interested in seeing but most aren't coming until 2012.

-15 minutes Venture Bros. special?! It was supposed to be 60-90 mins!
Jumping the gun here, aren't you? There's still going to be the 60-90 minute episode. It's just that along with that episode (and two more seasons of the show), AS has also picked one or two 15 minute specials as well.

-I see KOTH on that list, but no Bebop, GitS or FLCL. No, no, no. I don't like this one bit :(
Bebop, GitS, and FLCL will very likely still be on Adult Swim. The reason KotH is mentioned alongside those "acquisitions" that still have new episodes is most likely due to AS wanting to mention all the Fox shows that are airing on their channel (as those are the main source of ratings for the channel).

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
