I was doing some research on animation in Flash and I found some animatics for Johnny Test.

Mind you, I don't care for the show much, but from my recollection it has always premiered in 4:3 (academy ratio, a.k.a. 'full frame' for non-HD televisions). However, in the animatics given, it seems that the show has been animated in 16:9, aka HD-ratio, meaning that they cropped the left and right side of the screens, which makes cartoons and everything in general a horrifying experience since I feel ripped off. Now I not only notice it on JT but on other acquisitions from Canada, such as Total Drama. From what I've seen on YouTube, it was animated in 16:9, but I only see it as a 4:3 screen. Why is this? Considering all the other shows currently airing are letterboxed to fit the TV, why can't they do the same for these programs?

The 4:3 screen ratio is probably the ratio CN gets Johnny Test and Total Drama in. That, or CN is just sitting on the 16:9 ratio episodes for no reason. Apparently CN likes to sit on a lot of things.

Besides, that final clip of Johnny Test looks terrible in 16:9. I'd go as far as to say that it wasn't designed to be shown in 16:9 at all.

Well in the case of Johnny Test, a lot of those earlier episodes weren't cropped. Also, the animated clips you cited were test clips before the final episode cut. Cookie Jar probably cuts all those episodes to 4:3, so there might not be any 16:9 of those episodes out there... unless Johnny Test season 5 comes around and its in 16:9, Johnny Test isn't a widescreen show.

Besides, CN can't show all of its programs in 16:9, even stuff they made back in '05, it's just not possible.
