"We can say something about the Annie Awards that we can’t say about most other awards ceremonies: it ISN’T a popularity contest. The nominations for the 53rd Annies were revealed this morning, and there are two leads. One is the obvious — KPop Demon Hunters with ten noms — but the other is less expected, an equal number of noms for Pixar’s largely ignored summer alien flick Elio.
KPDH’s nominations include Best Writing, Best Character Animation, Best Voice Acting, Best Production Design and obviously, Best Music. Elio is chasing Best FX, Best Character Design, Best Storyboarding and Best Production Design. Both are in the running for Best Feature.
Chasing at their heels are Zootopis 2 with seven nominations, and the French movie Little Amélie or the Character of Rain with another seven. Third place goes to The Bad Guys 2 with five nominations. All five of the aforementioned films are up for Best Feature."
