These days you know you’re unlikely to be going into a classic when even the early influencer reactions were pretty tepid. Still, despite some real weak points I ultimately found this passable. It might have benefited from following on from seeing Masters of the Universe a few days earlier, which I liked a lot less. I appreciated some of the comparative restraint here

Action is mostly generic and not particular impressive, though the finale has some decent choreography and camerawork. Alcock is good. I wouldn’t say Momoa is bad but he’s pretty much exactly as you’d expect him to be, and not particularly well integrated into the movie. I’m not really familiar with Lobo and this didn’t really sell him to me. I see he was created in the 80s, which tracks, I probably would have thought he was pretty cool as a kid.

Unfortunately, I think the villain is awful. Schoenaerts is a distinguished actor whose work I confess I am entirely unfamiliar with, but it would be hard for anyone to do anything with this. Probably. At any rate he doesn’t. He’s also a pretty naff character from a design point, and aesthetically as a whole the movie is a bit of a nightmare with a lot of generic ugly aliens, a bit of the all too typical modern blockbuster dim lighting (though thankfully not constant), and tacky costumes. Less Mad Max and more WCW. That could be fun, but it just feels unfortunate here.

The strongest part of the movie is the flashback scenes, which do add a bit of substance and a feeling that this is building off Superman in a meaningful way. I do think they would have worked even better as the opening scenes of the film, and I wonder if this was restructured during production. It does feel a bit like it was.

I saw several people mention a needledrop in a climactic scene being particularly jarring. I was able to guess what that was when it came up, but it wasn’t as jarring to me perhaps as the song in question isn’t as well known in the UK.

I saw it in 3D. If you like 3D I wouldn’t necessarily go out of your way (and 3D Tickets are covered by my Odeon membership, so I didn't have to pay any extra) but there are a few cool moments.

There have been worse movies, but it is a comedown from Superman and a perhaps critical misstep for this new DC Universe. To their credit it’s a pretty different movie from Superman, but it also just doesn’t feel like something made with the same level of care and enthusiasm. But it’s not an unmitigated disaster. I found some mitigation.

Everyone applause these two characters, for soon getting their own spin-off full animated series!!! (who would have expected a series with PB and Marceline anyway? I know they have an upcoming comic book series which will go well with)

Watched Toy Story 5 today. It felt like another awesome escapade for the characters, while also they taught an important lesson: it's ok to be different, especially if you still like to play with toys. Lily turned from an antagonist to a hero of the movie, because of realising exactly that.
