Just a reminder: this is the 1990's X-Men, which means Deadpool isn't the fourth wall destroying antihero that we all love yet.
Either they jump from the 90's or bring everything to the 90's....what are the odds that at the end of all of the time travel shenanigans, they're no longer in the 90's but in the 2020's (the present day). But it's not post-apocalyptic world ruled by Sentinels or Apocalypse, instead it's....just the 2020's.
Or maybe I'm just thinking of what I said in the Gargoyles thread: When do theGargoylesX-Men get past the year 2000?!?
X-Men '97 season 2 roll call.
Season 1 recap.
IGN, Polygon and Nexus Point have reviews of season 2. Possible spoilers.
Even if the pacing was a bit too fast I feel like season caught a good balance in tone between the drama, messages, and SuperheroicsEven though my general view on media and franchises, especially James Bond, is usually about rejecting gritty tones and embracing fun and lighthearted things, I think season 2 of X-Men ’97 should have a gritty tone just like the first season.
Because structurally, the world of X-Men fits that gritty tone. Especially with character-driven animated shows like this, they should be gritty as much as they are larger-than-life and over-the-top.
If an animated show is not something like Rugrats, Phineas and Ferb or Ben 10, and if it aims for serious themes or a darker world, especially one where complex relationships matter more than simple heroics, then it should be gritty. Otherwise it turns into a campfest like Megas XLR or Generator Rex, where the stakes do not really feel serious and the story acts like the weight of events does not matter, or it becomes something childish like Avengers Assemble.
The stakes need to be felt.
It also had 26 episodes, though I feel like at least this show doesn't have to deal with having to force Wolverine into the lead role at the expense of other characters. One of the main criticisms of the first season was the pacing, but we have an even larger cast of characters for the next season....feels like they are still making same mistake.
I just rewatched Wolverine and the X-Men again, it managed to do a lot more with small cast, and had far more potential for another Apocalypse story.
Because you can ever just release one episode these daysAccording to the Disney+ July highlights, there will be 3 episodes released on July 1st.
"Dead Man's Hand" sounds a lot like we're getting Deathbit (AKA Gambit as Death)Reported episode titles for Season 2.
Episode 1 – Days of Past Future
Episode 2 – A Force to be Reckoned With
Episode 3 – Rise of Apocalypse: Part 1
Episode 4 – Rise of Apocalypse: Part 2
Episode 5 – Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs
Episode 6 – Danger.Exe
Episode 7 – Strange Land, Savage Heart
Episode 8 – The Dead Man's Hand
Episode 9 – Survival of the Fittest
If accurate, I like the how some of them are echoing titles from the original series. In case of #5 it's also a slight upgrade (the old title was "Weapon X, Lies & Video Tape").
#9 was also the title for an X-Men Evolution episode.
