International Disney Networks Thread Part 16

It would’ve been far better if FK Australia had just gone with its fellow feeds. In THIS world, it just spluttered along for two more years before being put out of its misery. It would’ve by proxy led to Jetix not being screwed over in the region.
While ideally it would've been much better, there are reasons why this didn't happen, which is the fact the channel was, unlike others, a "Foxtel channel" until the very end.

Sadly, it had never been given the chance to turn into Jetix before it shut down.

Yeah, a Toon Disney Australia was not terribly unrealistic, but I guess if that didn't happen, there were economic and availability issues.

It's a case of it is what it is
I add: obviously Playhouse Disney was a more important brand to launch (as it offered content targeting a different demographic) in some countries than Toon DIsney was, which, at the end of the day, was more of a "repeat channel", but nothing that couldn't found its place on DIsney Channel, albeit at more inconvenient times.

Toon Disney came to Italy before Playhouse though and was the only country where that happened I think (other than the US of course which was due to cable contract issues and lack of material to fill a whole channel, as PHDC Int was full of European and Canadian content).

Some of the other international Toon Disney feeds aired Playhouse content early in the morning as filler content too. The UK had a full block by the end. Other countries I think just aired what counted for EU quotas.

Partially wrong on that, the same was true for Scandinavia, where Toon Disney launched in 2005 and Playhouse Disney in 2006.

Basically, Playhouse Disney in many Western European countries and beyond, until mid-2006, was a more expensive channel, as it had live presentation, and therefore more expensive, while Toon Disney just required a "normal" playout.

Italy had a Toon Disney block (for weekday early mornings and holiday and weekend mornings) from 2002 to 2005, too

The reason it came to Scandinavia when it did coincided with the loss of in-vision presentation on PHDC UK. It was such a heavy part of the European feeds and the only other solution would be dubbing all the live-action segments (if that had been the case, I am sure that they would just originate it in Swedish and make Danish and Norwegian dubs, rather than come from English) which would be a bit intense. I think the MEA subfeed would have had all-Arabic (would they use Egyptian dialect like Disney preferred, or MSA like channels like Baraem?) IVC.

There could have been surveys in those days to assess its viability.
Yeah imagine how many young boys would be ecstatic to watch a channel with more Phineas and Ferb (The show aired on Toon Disney in the US and Germany, so it could've been the same in Australia).

Surprised Family Channel never launched Family Toon (hypothetical-Canadian TD) and Family Jr. in the early 2000s. Maybe could've also gotten actual TD in 2007 if it weren't for Disney XD being in its early stages.

DXD France was gender neutral though with Totally Spies, Sabrina, Tara Duncan, WITCH etc (I know they all count towards the French production quota but still).

As long as you count Totally Spies and WITCH Jetix leftovers (the latter being a SIP Animation production), fine by me.

Even if Disney XD feeds had a brief first-run flirtation with Phineas and Ferb, the show too was gender-neutral.

I don't count Totally Spies as Jetix leftovers because DC France renewed their rights (which expired in 2014 for most countries, Spain a bit later) and coproduced season 6.

Didn't the first season or first two seasons have a broadcast agreement with Disney in the EMEA region?

S1 and I guess 2 came from Fox Family in the US having the rights to said seasons, which meant Fox Kids Worldwide had to air it too. It was renewed a few times due to popularity I guess. Since that fell under Disney, DC France started rerunning it around 2007 to fulfil the French production quota. Other Disney Channels started airing the show mostly right after Jetix closed until 2013 with Spain and I think the Netherlands keeping it on until about 2015.

All this talk just reminded that today i had a dream that i find out that there was a Toon Disney Portugal... wait this is more suited for the dream thread

There's a dream thread?

It's not unrealistic but a Toon Disney everywhere couldn't have happened. It's not as big as Disney Channel. Most of us don't live in Australia so I wouldn't personally make a big deal out of it. I can't get most kids networks in a local language and I'm not complaining. Not everyone will get what they want. There are so many countries.

It was not impossible though, it just didn't happen.

I mean, Toon Disney launched in areas with almost the same population or less as Australia, such as in the Nordics.
Since it's clear they could have not launched local versions everywhere, it would've been better to have pan-shared-feeds in some cases.

But I mean, at the end of the day, complaining about Toon Disney not existing was a bit rich and privileged, when many countries had no Disney Channel at all before 2006, such as Central-Eastern Europe.

@Markus I think no one is making that big deal out of it anyway
