Provider encoding error from CN (and Cartoonito) CEE 2 days ago. When I tuned into CN I only saw a black screen, not the "Video unavailable".

The difference may be that you watched the HD feed, while the recording was made from the SD feed.

Fun fact: the Italian subtitles on the The Secret Saturdays DVD box is for the hearing impaired and seems to be nearly identical to the Italian dubbing script :D So you can just watch it in Italian with Italian subtitles! I'm sure those subtitles come from Cartoon Network or Boing Italy.

Maybe this is also true for the Ben 10 and Generator Rex DVD's? I don't know. Is this also the case for the CN cartoons on HBO Max in Italy?

I checked my other DVDs with Italian subtitles for the hearing impaired (Scooby-Doo: Camp Scare, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman: The Animated Series, Looney Tunes) and those subtitles are simply ordinary translations from English, so completely different from the Italian dub.

I never knew why some subtitles in foreign languages never matched the dub available on DVDs. Must have been laziness to match the script.

None of the CN cartoons on HBO Max in Italy have Italian subtitles to my knowledge, whether ones directly transcribed from the Italian dub or ones translated from the original English version. They don't even have English subtitles for the benefit of UK customers (except Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, but that show uses the U.S. print in the United Kingdom/Republic of Ireland anyway instead of the Western European print).

In fact, the only subtitles available on the Western European prints of CN shows on HBO Max to my knowledge are Swedish subtitles that are not always available. These subtitles are usually translated directly from the English audio, but some of them also borrow from the Swedish dubbings when it comes to things like lyrics, names/terminology and some dialogue.

HBO Max in most parts of the world don't have subtitles in animation. Keep that in mind.

They actually do in the United States, Latin America/Caribbean and Asia-Pacific regions, however.

It's mainly in the EMEA/Central Asia region where such subtitles are largely entirely absent altogether.

Besides, multilingual subtitles are problem for HBO Max as described here, Italian subs there barely exist, let alone if they match the script

Checkerboard too because CN did not have that much creative divergences abroad at launch.

By 1996, UK/EMEA started to be its own thing
But it wasn't localized at the time. You just watched the british feed.

I meant that UK/EMEA started to have small creative graphic divergences. That and the Britpop-infused soundtrack for some promos

Here, the only HBO Max subtitles are mostly on the live-action/non-kids and family programming. And I do consider that a problem. Every streaming service should benefit of ways for kids to learn English and understand the shows/films they see at the same time.

Meanwhile, Disney+ and Paramount+/SkyShowtime actually do bother with putting English subtitles on Disney Channel/Disney XD/Disney Jr. and Nickelodeon/Nick Jr. programming respectively here in Europe.

It's specifically an HBO Max Europe problem. Since HBO Max in EMEA/Central Asia generally uses about three different prints for pretty much all of the Cartoon Network/Cartoonito programming (and sometimes more than that for certain titles like the Adventure Time series finale), they would need to make about three different English subtitle tracks (one for each print) for just about every single episode of every single CN show. And no, they cannot merely recycle the subtitle tracks from the U.S., Latin America or Asia-Pacific prints either.

It's pretty lazy, as other streaming services tend to have as much subtitles as dubs if not more. It's also pretty inconvenient for me, as I'm used to watching stuff with English captions or Bulgarian subtitles, because I sometimes can't hear certain words.

I mean, Disney+ is pro in that.

I watched cartoons in English when I was a kid and still learned it eventually even without subtitles. I don't see it like it's the end of the world. In late 00s when my home was in the Baltics, we only had kids channels in English and no one complained and we accepted. Better than nothing.

The Voyo-exclusive Romanian dub of Garfield and Friends goes on with the second season now being relased. I was afraid they will forget about the show after only one season.

As someone who's Portuguese, it just bugs me again that we lost. I wanted Portugal to win this time because this is Ronaldo's last, but no, we think Ronaldo has devolved significantly, and we lost against Spain.

Conflicted about the upcoming film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, given the creator now distancing herself from it despite co-writing the screenplay and blocking one of the actresses on social media despite defending her casting in the film.
