Yeah well, until or unless Nintendo makes the decision, he's simply not coming.
Also, what do you mean "Game Boy universe"? Either way, just like the previous movie, Daisy appearing in the post-credit scene doesn't mean there's going to be another one. It could just be another reference. Movies are just a side thing, and Nintendo, simply may not (repeat, "may" not) make another one. Nobody can make assumptions about it either way.
(sigh) "Wario" this, "Wario" that. And social media swears up and down that a Donkey Kong movie is being planned when Nintendo said no such thing....
It's been said many times before that if you expect too much, you're just going to end up disappointed. That's literally all there is to it.
All right, rant over. Now for how I feel about the movie. Be prepared, though, this is going to be a long one.
Well, just like last time, it was watchable at least; something that (still) can't be said about Illumination's other movies. There was licensed music again, but it didn't seem like there was as much as last time, so that's a plus. I do wish they had made it so that Mario and Luigi had...some idea of Yoshi telling them his backstory. Actually, I'm going to say it: the "I guess we'll never know" punchline is more typical of what one would find in Illumination's other movies. I really didn't like how the movie said/implied one thing, but then pulled a 180 and said something else completely.
I do find it interesting how the "Gateway Galaxy" is a spaceport in this movie.
I also didn't like how Honey Queen was the exact opposite of who she is in the games. Clearly Illumination thought it would be fun to have a parody of her instead, where she's one of those "Queen of Hearts"-style "off with their heads" type of queens (she sentences them...er, Bowser to hard labor, but still). I don't know why, but it seems to me that the whole point of that whole part was so Illumination could do an "all queens are antagonistic" joke (if that is the case, then Queen Angella [She-Ra: Princess of Power] says hello...). In any case, Nintendo should have said no to this one, and had her be more like she is in the games.
Then there's "ox-Fay cCloud-May", who wasn't an April Fool's joke. I'm personally assuming that putting him in the movie was Illumination's idea, but that Nintendo "refined" it, if you know what I mean, by having it done in a meaningful way, and not just as a "creator in-joke", or even just a "video game" joke. Having him come from another dimension actually makes it clear that there is not going to be a "cinematic universe", but other than that, there isn't much else. Not only that, but you can just bet that Illumination would have loved to have run with the idea. Now, a later scene where he cries over his broken Arwing seemed like a taste of what Illumination really wanted to do. After, all Fox wouldn't do that...well, not really. An even bigger taste however, was the predictable and uncreative meme quoting. I think most people here know which meme (which Fox's backstory dropped hints at earlier) I mean, so I won't even mention it.
Personally, I could quote the "two nickels" meme here, but I'm not going to do that. Whatever the case may be, this seemed to be the one moment that you could say nearly ruined the entire movie, unlike the previous movie where there were at least four of these moments. Overall, the movie would have been greatly improved if, simply put, Fox wasn't in the movie at all, and everyone involved found another way to get them to the Space Junk Galaxy.
The part where Mario and Luigi turn into babies (as seen on Yoshi's Island)...I don't know, seemed like filler to me; something done just to make the runtime longer. If anything, it could be either or...I guess.
I did like the reveal that Peach and Rosalina are...
...in this movie. While that could also be true of the games, everyone should just assume that it's only for the movie.
"Don't forget who you are" parody aside, I did feel they were reaching with the, uh, "father and son" moments with the two Bowsers. "Yes, they're both delusional, now can we get to the next part? Please?"
I did find Lumalee being the guard of the cell those two "maggots" Dry Bowser (in pieces) and Bowser Jr. are in to be funny.
Overall, I knew I couldn't trust Illumination. Once again, the movie only turned out the way it did because of Nintendo's direct involvement (which includes paying for half the movie, and generally reigning Illumination in). It's funny, though. I wouldn't say it was better or worse than the previous movie. Instead, it was...about the same. So much so, that I plan to watch it again, and get it on home video and streaming once that happens. I'll even get the soundtrack album, any way that gets released. Going back to the movie itself. I'll say it right now: don't listen to the critics. and don't listen to rumors. You should watch the movie yourself, and decide for yourself if you like the movie or not.
I'd say that covers it. That, plus $34M on the first day is nothing to sneeze at...
