This movie went by very fast I will give it that. I like some of the Easter Eggs we had here, like Toad's hatred of Yoshi, that is a reference to Yoshi replacing him in the games. And of course Wart is in the movie, though I felt his plot was unresolved.

Just me or the first half of the movie when Mario had Bowser captive and Bowser Jr. trying to rescue him and Mario is of a jerk about it, is that a reference to Donkey Kong Jr?

And the very end we get Princess Daisy, which opens the Game Boy universe, does that mean that Wario can't be far behind? I am hoping the main villain of movie 3.

Yeah well, until or unless Nintendo makes the decision, he's simply not coming.

Also, what do you mean "Game Boy universe"? Either way, just like the previous movie, Daisy appearing in the post-credit scene doesn't mean there's going to be another one. It could just be another reference. Movies are just a side thing, and Nintendo, simply may not (repeat, "may" not) make another one. Nobody can make assumptions about it either way.

(sigh) "Wario" this, "Wario" that. And social media swears up and down that a Donkey Kong movie is being planned when Nintendo said no such thing....

It's been said many times before that if you expect too much, you're just going to end up disappointed. That's literally all there is to it.

All right, rant over. Now for how I feel about the movie. Be prepared, though, this is going to be a long one.

Well, just like last time, it was watchable at least; something that (still) can't be said about Illumination's other movies. There was licensed music again, but it didn't seem like there was as much as last time, so that's a plus. I do wish they had made it so that Mario and Luigi had...some idea of Yoshi telling them his backstory. Actually, I'm going to say it: the "I guess we'll never know" punchline is more typical of what one would find in Illumination's other movies. I really didn't like how the movie said/implied one thing, but then pulled a 180 and said something else completely.

I do find it interesting how the "Gateway Galaxy" is a spaceport in this movie.

I also didn't like how Honey Queen was the exact opposite of who she is in the games. Clearly Illumination thought it would be fun to have a parody of her instead, where she's one of those "Queen of Hearts"-style "off with their heads" type of queens (she sentences them...er, Bowser to hard labor, but still). I don't know why, but it seems to me that the whole point of that whole part was so Illumination could do an "all queens are antagonistic" joke (if that is the case, then Queen Angella [She-Ra: Princess of Power] says hello...). In any case, Nintendo should have said no to this one, and had her be more like she is in the games.

Then there's "ox-Fay cCloud-May", who wasn't an April Fool's joke. I'm personally assuming that putting him in the movie was Illumination's idea, but that Nintendo "refined" it, if you know what I mean, by having it done in a meaningful way, and not just as a "creator in-joke", or even just a "video game" joke. Having him come from another dimension actually makes it clear that there is not going to be a "cinematic universe", but other than that, there isn't much else. Not only that, but you can just bet that Illumination would have loved to have run with the idea. Now, a later scene where he cries over his broken Arwing seemed like a taste of what Illumination really wanted to do. After, all Fox wouldn't do that...well, not really. An even bigger taste however, was the predictable and uncreative meme quoting. I think most people here know which meme (which Fox's backstory dropped hints at earlier) I mean, so I won't even mention it.

Personally, I could quote the "two nickels" meme here, but I'm not going to do that. Whatever the case may be, this seemed to be the one moment that you could say nearly ruined the entire movie, unlike the previous movie where there were at least four of these moments. Overall, the movie would have been greatly improved if, simply put, Fox wasn't in the movie at all, and everyone involved found another way to get them to the Space Junk Galaxy.

The part where Mario and Luigi turn into babies (as seen on Yoshi's Island)...I don't know, seemed like filler to me; something done just to make the runtime longer. If anything, it could be either or...I guess.

I did like the reveal that Peach and Rosalina are...

sisters

...in this movie. While that could also be true of the games, everyone should just assume that it's only for the movie.

"Don't forget who you are" parody aside, I did feel they were reaching with the, uh, "father and son" moments with the two Bowsers. "Yes, they're both delusional, now can we get to the next part? Please?"

I did find Lumalee being the guard of the cell those two "maggots" Dry Bowser (in pieces) and Bowser Jr. are in to be funny.

Overall, I knew I couldn't trust Illumination. Once again, the movie only turned out the way it did because of Nintendo's direct involvement (which includes paying for half the movie, and generally reigning Illumination in). It's funny, though. I wouldn't say it was better or worse than the previous movie. Instead, it was...about the same. So much so, that I plan to watch it again, and get it on home video and streaming once that happens. I'll even get the soundtrack album, any way that gets released. Going back to the movie itself. I'll say it right now: don't listen to the critics. and don't listen to rumors. You should watch the movie yourself, and decide for yourself if you like the movie or not.

I'd say that covers it. That, plus $34M on the first day is nothing to sneeze at...

i thought this movie was pretty bad. i let the first one slide on the grounds that it's not as bad of an adaptation as the 93' movie, and rather than a gritty take, this is more light, kid oriented. pacing is pretty bad, but its a movie that, from what i could tell, was very heavily for a younger demographic. when i heard the sequel was gonna be galaxy orientated, i thought they'd step up a little bit and make more of a movie with a plot. i really enjoy the actual mario galaxy games, particularly the first one. aside from locations being mentioned, rosalina, and the lumas, there is not a lot here that is galaxy orientated, honestly? i'd say it's more odyssey if rosalina wasn't a core story element, and that isn't saying a whole lot either,
fox gets more screentime than rosalina. not kidding.

maybe if you just like mario and don't care about being faithful to games or movies having a structured plot and just wanna watch a bunch of mario characters goof around, maybe it's a good time? but i went in with very low expectations and left still incredibly disappointed. i don't think of myself as a snobby critic about movies, and this is pretty standard illumination flare. but i think actually enjoying the mario series of games actually hurts the experience. it's too refrence heavy, not a lot of substance out of this at all. the music was nice but strangly, not a lot of galaxy motifs, theres a few but not as many as i had hoped, especially when galaxy has such a good soundtrack.

i'd give this movie a rental if you really are interested, but personally i would pass on this unless you are genuinely curious on it

It seems I'm in a minority so far in preferring this one to the first. I don't expect that to change, it may be as simple as seeing this one on the big screen (in 3D) whereas the last one I saw at home where I felt its charms wore away quickly. Quite simply the appeal of these films is seeing the games recreated on the big screen, watching them at home you might as well be playing a game. Also this movie draws more from the games, so in that sense it's "better", which is not to say it isn't overstuffed and that I can't understand why people wouldn't prefer the thin but somewhat focused narrative of the first.

Like the first movie they dedicate a fair amount of time to a character who isn't part of the mainline Mario games. To be fair Donkey Kong obviously has a longstanding (ie to the very beginning) connection to Mario, whereas putting Fox McCloud in here does feel like a type of product placement, even if it's not yet clear what product they're placing. But I found Fox a more tolerable character than DK, and his little Anime sequence was one of the high points of the film. I also enjoyed the sequences of faux(?)-puppetry and Pixel animation.

The film was exhausting and not exactly engaging, but it certainly wasn't boring and was somewhat entertaining.

@ Silver-7:

The first movie has a plot; a basic one, but one nonetheless. This movie is no different (as fsr as that goes, anyway), and personally, I don't think that's a bad thing. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", after all...

And the very end we get Princess Daisy, which opens the Game Boy universe, does that mean that Wario can't be far behind? I am hoping the main villain of movie 3.
It's certainly an interesting choice. At this rate, she's a sister to Daisy, too. The first movie's tease was Yoshi but instead of a Super Mario World movie, it was Galaxy with nods to different games (like Sunshine with Jr.'s brush, the inverted pyramid from Odyssey, RPG with Peach's parasol, Professor Gadd from Luigi's Mansion was referenced on Kamek's mug, Super Mario Maker, the Nintendo bridge battle, Frog suit from 3, the Drill suit and Gateway Galaxy from Wonder, Koopa Klown Car and Cape feather from World, Wart, Birdo and Mouser from 2, Peach using moves from Smash Bros) like the first did. If I remember right, a Brooklynite was reading a book titled "Galaxy" so there could a hint somewhere in this movie like that. So logically, Daisy being teased doesn't necessarily mean Super Mario Land (but I totally loved the Game Boy games) and movie 3 will likely be something else though I don't think Daisy has appeared in that many games.

Agreed, Wario seems like a logical choice for one of the next classic villains to appear. I think he was being serious but Charlie Day said he'd like Danny DeVito to voice him if he does come up. Like Donkey Kong and Star Fox, Wario is an easy choice for a spin-off movie or if they go the 'Sonic' route, a spin-off streaming series.

I thought it was pretty good, but I have a couple of notes:

-A lot of the subplots end weirdly and felt like they forgot to finish them, like Wart warning Bowser Jr. and Sr. (which I thought was him coming to kill them), the Honey Queen inprisoning Bowser in exchange for the brothers to get to the Gateway Galaxy, the dinosaur that got turned into a baby, Mario trying to admit his feelings to Peach, and Peach's discoverance and bond with her sister Rosalina (who I thought was being potrayed as Peach's mom at first during Peach's flashback, given her line about not knowing her real family).

-Speaking of endings, the movie also kind of ends abruptly, it cuts to credits after Peach's castle gets rebuilt and Mario flies around it. It felt like there was supposed to be a few minutes afterwards that got cut.

-Star Fox's inclusion was fun (and R.O.B.'s was funner), but odd since there wasn't really any connection (barring Smash Brothers) between his and Mario's franchise. If the teaser at the end was for more characters than just Daisy (given that some of their other games got cameos), then they could've pushed for the threequel to kick-off the world's 2nd MCU (Mario Cinematic Universe).

-Donkey Kong is relegated to just a cameo. If they couldn't get Seth Aaron Rogen back, they should've at least replaced him.

-The post-credits scene where Bowser Jr. and Dry Bowser Sr. are in jail was funny, but also abrupt, and also kinda unneeded? Given their genuine father/son bond, and the deeds Bowser did for the brothers and vice versa, I figure they and hero team could've departed amicably, at least for now.

I'm thinking they should put some more footage in for the Blu-ray.

What do you think of my idea of how Wario would exist in this world. My idea is Bowser tries to create a Mario clone. In this movie, you had the sub plot of Bowser deep down wanting to be Mario's friend. How about in response he and his army create their own Mario that has more of Bowser's personality.

Hm, that would be interesting, sure! It would be something different if Kamek makes a deranged magic clone.

All I remember from the game canon was he's Mario's childhood rival I think?

Wario is Nintendo's answer to Bluto. Wario is the anti-hero.

Welllll, they COULD include at lease one deleted scene as an extra. It was in one of the trailers. The Lumas are all partying, Rosalina checks to see if they're asleep, they pretend to sleep, and as soon as she closes the door, they go back to partying.

Other than that, I'm pretty sure that what everyone saw is what everyone will get...

Just got back from it. I enjoyed it, although it's probably one of those movies where I'll think of flaws the more I analyze it (some of which were already mentioned). But I can't deny that while it was going on, it kept my attention and I had a good time. In terms of pure spectacle, it did its job just like the first movie did. Loved all the various Nintendo universe references, even if it is a little weird to think of Star Fox as canon with the Mario-verse. R.O.B. being super slow reminded me of Flash from Zootopia without feeling too derivative because, after all, the real R.O.B. was that slow.

The main thing I was a little disappointed in is that Rosalina pretty much became an afterthought after she becomes a captive in the steel dome thing. By "afterthought", I mean yeah she's the goal for the heroes, but we don't really see much of her until the climax. Which is too bad because she kicked ass during her introductory sequence, and in the first Galaxy game she acted as a guide for Mario which was lost here. But I guess the characters needed somebody to rescue.

The post-credits scene was unnecessary. They brought back the nihilistic star as a night guard. Eh. I didn't really find him that funny in the first film. Why not tease a character for the inevitable third movie instead?

Imo the movie was leaps and bounds below the first. It's their own fault for titling it Mario Galaxy Movie. Of course people would think that MARIO GALAXY would play a bit more of a role in this.

I hate that Rosalina's backstory was removed, and that she was basically jettisoned from the story so early on. I do not care for Star Fox and I hate that McCloud got more screen time than the character the Galaxy game literally REVOLVES around.

This is combined with all the pitfalls of the original and so "it's for kids" is in no way a proper defence anymore.

Just saw it at the mall's CMX theater, in 3D! It was SOOOOOO cosmic, an eyepopping experience! Who'd've guessed that Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Yoshi would join forces with Fox McCloud on such a mission to find Rosalina! Seeing Mario and Fox have their share of stardom in each of their games, never changed 'em a bit! (Here's hoping Fox would meet ol' Donkey Kong in another movie.)

And you gotta love those touching family reunions between father and son, and big sister and little sister. Bowser and his son Jr. already have been like that in the games, but Peach having Rosalina as a big sister? I'm kinda glad Nintendo revisited that idea for the movie. Why didn't they make it like that for the Super Mario Galaxy game? And why were Peach and Rosalina made of stardust?

And the Super Scope? Wow! There's some similarity between this movie and the ill-fated live-action 1993 Mario movie.

Heck, a lot of characters were in this one, including Birdo, Monty, Wart, Ukiki, etc. And R.O.B., the guy who helped launch the NES in '85, now works for the Galaxy Gateway!

And those reptilian characters roaring, I was screaming at the top of my lungs, I was so scared!

I don't care what Rotten Tomatoes says about it, this Mario cinematic universe is (forgive me, Nintendo) a major punchout!

I just got back from seeing it. It was a fun ride but I’m not sure if I have any really desire to see it again. I get the feeling there was a lot of in jokes, references, and cameos that went straight over my head since I’m not into video games that much. My friend said this movie was probably made to show off ideas for future movies, and I agree with that statement. My friend really enjoyed the Pikmin cameo. Again it was a good time and I don’t regret watching it but it doesn’t really have the “value” the first one has.

That's my thinking too.

On the big screen, seings all the references to the different Mario games gave me a real sugar rush, but there's not anything of substance beneath that makes me want to seek it out for repeat viewings.

Don't tell that to the weirdos on Animation Twitter who make kids animated movies their whole religion and will angrily fight people with criticisms.

Everyone applause these two characters, for soon getting their own spin-off full animated series!!! (who would have expected a series with PB and Marceline anyway? I know they have an upcoming comic book series which will go well with)

Watched Toy Story 5 today. It felt like another awesome escapade for the characters, while also they taught an important lesson: it's ok to be different, especially if you still like to play with toys. Lily turned from an antagonist to a hero of the movie, because of realising exactly that.
