The dub opening has 6.6 million views and 5Ds just 3 million. Its not my favorite series or anything but I am wondering why it has more views. I think it might be because 5D's got so screwed over by Cartoon Network and The CW. As bad as Zexal and its dub were, it had a really consistent home and schedule until the end of Vortexx.

I always liked Zexal, probably more than any other YGO series.

not a popular opinion, but it's just how i feel.

I think Zexal is a love it or hate it season but I feel like if you stick with it long enough it grows on you.

It does seem to be more well received now than it has been. Zexal got a lot of hate during and after its run, but for the past couple of years at least, I've seen more fans being receptive towards Zexal. I still wouldn't consider it a hugely popular series among the online community. I think it's hard for any series after 5D's to be considered a huge hit among fans for a lot of reasons anyway, but there has been more love towards the series for awhile. It did come out over ten years ago, so it would definitely be considered nostalgic at this point too. Admittedly, I wish that Arc V could get this kind of love among the fanbase since it's my favorite series in the franchise. It sure would be better to see stuff like that instead of people complaining about the ending or the Synchro arc for the thousandth time.

Personally speaking, I was never huge into Zexal. It was my least favorite series in the franchise before Vrains came along. I can see why people would like it more than I do. If I at least could enjoy more of the main cast, then I probably would have found it more engaging at least. Most of the main cast was boring and the duels were pretty lackluster. Shark was by far my favorite character and the last couple of arcs were pretty good though. One of these days I may try to rewatch it since some elements might have been better than I initially gave it credit for. I don't think it would change my opinion on the series drastically, especially when it shares similar problems that I had with Vrains, but it still might be more enjoyable than it was for the first time around.

It's sad that this dub opening is so much better than at least the past three instrumental only dub openings. It actually has a beat and lyrics, which are practically a treat for dub openings nowadays.

I loved the new openings (I have absolutely terrible taste lol) a lot but this is sad to see, I remember how little you liked Zexal and its dub opening, seeing you say this must mean the most recent stuff was particularly terrible to you. Same with Vrains, but I didnt like that one at all.

The past three dub opening have all been instrumental. They aren't necessarily bad. I think that they were trying to mimic the original DM dub opening, but that worked because it had energy behind it still while the new openings don't. There hasn't been a good dub opening in my opinion since Hyper Drive for 5D's. Although, I remember Halfway to Forever, the second dub opening for Zexal, was pretty good.

The beat is good and the lyrics work, but I think that the singer is weaker than I remember. Not bad, but I think that there needed to be more passion in his voice to make the song stand out more. It's still a noticeable improvement from the first dub theme. The editing for the opening feels pretty all over the place, but to be fair, I think that's been the case for quite some time. I don't know if it's due to the editing quality, what bits they keep from the original openings and episodes, being more familiar with the original opening themes than I was when I first got into the franchise or all the above. I've seen other dub openings being compared to AMVs, so it isn't exclusive to the Yu-Gi-Oh! dub openings either.

Zexal is not that bad. People just hated on it because it had a slow start. At first it seems childish and derivative of the original. By the time we get to arcs like World Duel Carnival and Barian, it’s much different. The numbers club don’t prove all that important any more than Tea and Duke Devlin were in original Yugioh. That’s fine; because Shark and Kite are better uses of screen time than Cat Cathy and Kronk from da Bronx…

This second opening also has 3 million views. Zexal really is surprisingly popular.

I didn't care much for the World Duel Carnival arc. From what I remember at least, it started off pretty poorly with most of Yuma's duels being filler and the tournament not properly connecting with the actual conflict with Tron and his sons until Yuma dueled III, which was the last qualifying match for him to make it into the World Duel Carnival. The later duels were better, particularly Shark vs. IV, Yuma vs. Shark and Yuma vs. Tron, but I would still say it's too little too late. Not to mention Dr. Faker is by far the worst villain in the entire franchise. Everything about him is just surrounded by terrible writing.

The second season did feel like an noticeable improvement, or at the very least it was more interesting and engaging than most of the first season. The Barians were more memorable antagonists than Dr. Faker, even though Tron is probably still my favorite Zexal antagonist. The last two arcs of the series were genuinely good. The Legendary Numbers arc was my favorite and while I had some more issues with the Barian Invasion arc by comparison, it was still engaging with some good duels and a pretty satisfying ending. The second season doesn't fix all of my problems with Zexal. There were still plenty of bad/sloppy writing and decisions that I didn't like, but compared to the first half of the series, it was more interesting.

I'd give Tea a bit more credit here. She wasn't unimportant in DM. She played a key role in finding Atem's name. Tea is basically Kotori done right, or at least done better. She is the token girl of the group, but she actually has a personality, her own desires and has connections with other characters besides Yugi. Kotori is basically Yuma's shadow cheerleader. She rarely interacts with any other character, her whole world revolves around Yuma and she has no dreams. Tea wasn't the odd one out as the only non-duelist in the main cast either. Kotori asks Rio once to teach her how to duel and her only duel in the series was when she was brainwashed for an episode. There is no good reason why Kotori had to not be a duelist, especially when every other character in the cast is. It isn't surprising in a way when the head writer for Zexal is not known for writing female characters particularly well, but it is still pretty disappointing.

While I agree that Shark and Kaito are better characters to focus on than the Numbers Club, I think that's missing the forest for the trees. The Numbers Club shouldn't have even been a thing to begin with. They're all boring characters and you can easily remove three of them without changing anything. As much as I don't like Kotori, I don't think she is as easily removable, if only because she's in every single episode for some insane reason, and Tetsuo at least saved Yuma from Number 96 early on in the series. If Yuma's friend group was just Kotori and Tetsuo, they could have potentially been able to create a chemistry with that friend group. I don't think it would have drastically improved their personalities to make them good characters, but trimming out the useless unnecessary characters in Yuma's school friend group would have been better. The Numbers Club never felt like a group of friends, but a group with one friend in common and even then, Yuma barely interacted with anyone who wasn't Kotori or Tetsuo anyway.

Oh wow this part of Zexal got torn apart LOL. I liked Tetsuo but I agree the other characters in that club are boring. And it is pretty telling the Japanese names are used for Zexal since the dub is horrible LOL.

Admittedly, I'm more used to using the dub names for the spin-off series than the dub names at this point. Tori is a pretty fine dub name, way better than Bronk or Flip. Even Shark's dub name makes me role my eyes. But I'm used to calling her Kotori. Zexal was technically the last Yu-Gi-Oh! dub that I kept up with though. I tried to for Arc V's dub and I did watch the first season, but I didn't want to mix up the two versions since I love the original Arc V so much and wanted to rewatch the subbed version instead. I haven't kept up with the dubs for Vrains, Sevens or Go Rush either, but at this point, I'm just more used to watching the subbed versions. Even if the dubs were better quality, they take so long to come out that I probably would have become a sub only watcher by the time Arc V started anyway.

Oh wow. I thought you hated it. I remember at least not having much love for it. And this isnt a callout post. I dont love it either. I watched it because it aired on Toonzai and I wanted to check out its shows but that stopped halfway through so I stopped watching. I do have to defend that Arc V's dub was more offputting to me since that dub ruined a much better season. I have to say Arc V got done DIRTY.

Zexal was my least favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! series at the time and while most of my opinions haven't really changed, I probably don't hate it as much now that Vrains is my least favorite series in the franchise. There were some good voices among the Arc V dub cast and some names that didn't bother me. I still loathe Yuzu's dub name and I still say that should have called Reiji Reggie instead of Delcan of all things, but I don't know if the dub quality was worse than usual for that series. Granted, I only saw the first season, but I don't think it reached parody dub status like the GX dub did in its third season. It did suffer from some bad dialogue and changing characters' personalities, but that's pretty standard for this franchise.

Arc V dub I watched all the way… some of the voice acting is super campy. That is what makes it a fun dub though. The worst that happened to it was skipping the middle third in Nicktoons, but at least it was dubbed and aired in Australia or Canada. Does anyone know if there was major censorship in Arc V?
