Various media outlets are reporting that toymaker Hasbro is in talks to buy DreamWorks Animation, SKG, Inc, as well as discussions to turn their AwesomenessTV channel into a joint venture with Hearst. The Hasbro/DreamWorks merger is reported to be at least 60 days away, and the reports state that both sides agree that Jeffrey Katzenberg would continue as chair of the combined operation if the merger goes through. The merger would give Hasbro an inlet into the family entertainment business to supplement and promote its core games and toys business.
The deal with Hearst would provide funding for the AwesomenessTV channel, with Hearst paying $81.25 million for a 25% stake in the Internet channel. Reports state that the funding, with a possible additional infusion from DreamWorks, would be used to launch three digital channels: one for AwesomenessTV content, one targeted at mothers, and one kids sports channel.
