The Creature Commandos have not yet burned through their first season on Max, but the streamer has decided to be gracious with them and guarantee more. A second season renewal of the show was confirmed today. Since you can’t tell these days, we will see if this is an honest-to-goodness re-commitment, or if the behind-the-scenes order was for two seasons all along (it depends on how quickly it shows up).

Amanda Waller can’t rely on the Suicide Squad anymore since the US government has outlawed sending convicted criminal humans to accomplish dangerous tasks under penalty of neck bombs going off. Amanda’s all about finding loopholes though. What if she were to assemble a new team that didn’t legally QUALIFY as human? Thus the Creature Commandos were assembled: Dr. Phosphorous, Weasel, GI Robot, Nina Mazursky (a fish-woman), Eric Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein. Four episodes are currently out there with three more to go — they appear Thursdays.

“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them,” said HBO and Max Comedy Programming VP Amy Gravitt. “We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem,” James Gunn and Peter Safran said in a co-statement. “From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings…We are proud to call Max home.”

Oh yes, speaking of Peacemaker, we are due to get the second season of that show in August of 2025, and it is also confirmed to be part of the Gunnverse as well (kind of…Gunn says it’ll make sense when we get there). Between that and Superman, you’ll have plenty of DC-ness to occupy your time while you wait for Creature Commandos Season 2, which currently has no release window.
