Jeff Smith’s legendary comic book epic “Bone” was pretty straightforward, with a beginning, middle and end, though the story took over a decade to illustrate to completion (and it’s taking significantly longer to manifest as a movie). The comic ended in the late 2000’s. Now, suddenly, surprise — there’s another chapter.
Called “Bone: Coda,” it’s a 32-page story that has butkus to do with the long narrative that preceded it — it’s an adventure Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone (plus one friend, whom I won’t reveal in case you never read the whole comic) had while traveling back to Boneville. Due to how the comic ended you won’t be seeing anyone else, and it doesn’t answer the question of whether the characters are literally talking bones or not (seriously, I wonder about this). An eight-page preview is available now at CBR. Warning: It makes you want much more.
In addition, the new chapter will be followed by comics historian Stephen Weiner’s BONE Companion, which is a lengthy write-up on “Bone’s” characters, world and mythology. “Bone: Coda” will be available starting in July.
