You ever have that friend who just won’t leave? Like every time they say “well, I guess I better start heading back…” the conversation then shifts to something else and they don’t head back for another ten minutes? Attack On Titan feels a lot like that proverbial human right now. We never thought we’d be writing about it again, but…Studio MAPPA found a way.
The studio announced today that Episodes 29-35 of the final season will be re-edited into one solid movie and re-released in that form as Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack. MAPPA released a teaser trailer and a release date of November 8.
Will it be any different than the final episodes and extended specials that aired last year? Somewhat. Series director Yuichiro Hayashi says the visuals will be given an upgrade from the television version, but otherwise it’s the same story. “I originally drew the storyboards [for THE FINAL CHAPTERS] with the idea that it would be watched as a single movie,” Hayashi says. “So, having the opportunity to have everyone watch it in the best possible environment, the theater, is a dream come true for me.”
Perhaps we shouldn’t be THAT surprised that AOT is dragging things out in this manner, considering compilation movies are not a new thing for it. There has been one for each season so far. But this IS the last one, right? They’re not going to now edit the entire series into a 15-hour movie and release it THAT way, right? I didn’t just give MAPPA an idea, did I?
There is no announced Western release or English dub for Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack — YET — but it’s only a matter of time. You don’t have to see the movie to relive the finale though. Attack On Titan‘s final season was just announced this week for Blu-Ray and DVD; the season set and complete set will be available November 26.
