Adventure Time takes so much inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons that you might wonder why the two things haven’t been literally combined yet. Looks like the day is finally coming…tabletop publisher Cryptozoic has announced an official Adventure Time TTRPG is in the works, and have opened a Kickstarter campaign to get it moving.

“Adventure Time created an amazing, fully realized world that fans couldn’t get enough of, so it was the ideal property for our first foray into roleplaying games,” says Cory Jones, CCO of Cryptozoic. “The gameplay is classic: Use your imagination and dice to overcome the Dungeon Master’s challenges. We‘ve focused on the core benefit of an RPG… unlocking YOUR creativity! Who wouldn’t want to be a part of their own Adventure Time story?”

There are some tabletop adaptions of popular properties that create their own rules, even when they boast they’re “5E Compatible.” Not this one. You play Adventure Time: The Roleplaying Game exactly how you play vanilla D&D — the game is designed for everyone, including people who have never touched a TTRPG in their lives.

The core rulebook, “Prismo’s Guide To Adventures In Ooo,” will come bundled with “Jake’s Shmowzow Guide to Roleplaying Games,” a handholding guide to the basics of D&D for anyone just starting out. It is written by Ray Winninger, co-designer of the DC Heroes RPG and former Executive Producer of Dungeons & Dragons itself.

The Adventure Time tabletop RPG launched its crowdfunding campaign a few days ago and has already shattered its initial goal of $100K (as of this writing it’s nearing $400K). Here’s what you get in each tier:

  • Slam-Bam-In-A-Can: $50
Core rulebook and Jake’s Shmowzow Guide
  • Rhombus Ding Dong: $85
Core rulebook, Jake’s Shmowzow Guide, three Character Journals and a Character Sheet Pack
  • Algebraic Adventure: $100
Core rulebook, Jake’s Shmowzow Guide, Adventure Quest Book, Twist Cards, three Character Journals and a Character Sheet Pack
  • Mathematical!: $135
Everything from the previous tiers AND a set of Jake The Dog shaped dice
  • Way Cray Beeswax: $200
Everything from the previous tiers plus a dice bag, a DM screen, a Map of Ooo and all stretch goals

Adventure Time: The Roleplaying Game will be open on Kickstarter until May 15. Though there are plans to sell the game in stores eventually, some of the items will be exclusive to this campaign.
