Nintendo in 2020 can be defined a few different ways. In terms of sales, they have been dominant. The Nintendo Switch has been the top console for every single month of the year, and the games on Switch have been selling incredibly well. The standout of course being Animal Crossing New Horizons which has sold well over 22 million since its launch in late March. However, in regards to the releases of the games for the system…it’s been sporadic. And the Nintendo Direct showcases that usually give new information have been…sparce.
Technically speaking, the last “true” Nintendo Direct was in September of last year! We had a “mini” in March (which was 30 minutes long) and didn’t give too much of an outlook on the 2020 year. Then, a recent “partner showcase” focused on 3rd party titles, many of which weren’t coming until 2021. But now, a new rumor is that we might be getting a new Direct this week.
This comes from an editor from VentureBeat who has been rather accurate about rumors about Nintendo as of late. Including him saying that the 28th (which would be Friday) will be the date a new Direct arrives.
He also pointed out that even if he was wrong about the date, that Nintendo should have a general kind of Direct in the next month or so for a good reason. Mainly that Nintendo is going to have a major shareholder meeting in September and that usually lines up with the news coming from the company beforehand so that the investors can ask about the announcements, new methods of release, and so on.
Gamers are for sure desperate to have a regular Nintendo Direct happen again. The outlook of 2020 is pretty bleak because of the lack of news from Nintendo, and there’s only 1 more 1st party title on the books…and it’s a port of Pikmin 3.
We’ll see how things develop throughout the week.
