"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Toonami keeping on ignoring AMC and Sentai has to be studied. Can't get stuff from Sony's Crunchyroll? Fine. Go to the other big licensor in the States?

What really makes it strange is that they use Sentai to dub a bunch of their originals. By Demarco’s accidental admission, because they are the cheapest option on the market. But unintentional diss or not, having them actually dubbing a bunch of your shows seems like it would be an easy foot in the door to shop their catalog.

They seem to have always had some kind of issue with Sentai though. They didn’t get a show from them at all till late 2015, then after those ended in 2016, we didn’t see them on the block again till 2019, and that was an emergency pickup to replace a different show that didn’t pan out. I believe they have been off the block outside of originals since 2022.

From Sentai’s side, they always seemed to be cooperative, even asking fans to suggest their shows to Toonami, so they clearly wanted to be on the block.

The merger hasn't gone through yet and I'm hoping it won't for a few reasons, so ideally Paramount won't be a factor. Either way, I can't imagine either company spending the time and money to get exclusive rights to anime just for Toonami. It might sound cool, but I don't know how smart it is from a business perspective, especially when neither company are in the best financial position right now.
I think School Live could be a GREAT show for them. A show that has a really big twist in the first episode and its relatively appealing due to its
Nature as a genre busting Zombie Apocalypse Anime. Also why hasnt Toonami aired Madoka Magica? Its such a no brainer, but they have never aired it. They cant afford to say "Oh its too old" because at this point they should be desparate and airing anything they can.

Honestly Madoka Magica would've been a big bang to kick off the Toonami revival - Aniplex had just started releasing the dubbed volumes. I guess it might've clashed with Deadman Wonderland, but I couldn't tell you a single thing about Casshern Sins other than KILL CASSHERN and that it's much tamer than Funimation's MA rating implied.

It might be cool if HBO Max got more acquired anime. It's mainly the Ghibli films and the divisive Toonami originals, but considering how Hulu and Amazon are struggling with anime, it seems like only Crunchyroll and Netflix are really succeeding at this whole anime thing.
It feels like each year at a panel, WB always claims they're going to do that.

Yea I really liked Gakkou Gurashi when I watched it. Wouldn’t mind seeing it on the block.

I’d assume part of it was a budget issue, Madoka was a hot commodity and the money wasn’t flowing in those early days.

I don’t recall the specifics but I feel like Madoka may have had an exclusivity contract with someone in 2012 as well. Hulu maybe? Idk.
